The Whales. More than 3,000 whales and dolphins are in captivity around the world. All of them are individuals with unique personalities. All of them need to be retired to sanctuaries. They include 60 orcas and more than 300 belugas at marine parks and aquariums, along with “Dolphin-Assisted Therapy” and “Swim-with-Dolphins” programs at OUR TEAM | THE WHALE SANCTUARY PROJECT | BACK TO NATURE Dr. Lori Marino is a neuroscientist, internationally known for her work on the evolution of the brain and intelligence in dolphins, whales, primates and farmed animals. WHAT IS AN AUTHENTIC SANCTUARY? A sanctuary is by definition a place where the wellbeing of the residents is always the priority. There are hundreds of first-class sanctuaries all over the world: for elephants, big cats, bears, great apes, dogs and cats, koalas, parrots, and other animals of all kinds. And while visitors can usually take a tour, there are no rides and no “LIVE SERIES” OF WEBINARS AND CONVERSATIONS How to become a scientist and an advocate for marine mammals. Two members of the team who brought Keiko, the whale of “Free Willy” fame, talk about what it was like bringing him to Iceland and helping him prepare to be returned to the ocean. Our “Live Series” of webinars is made possible by generous sponsors. HOW THE FIRST ORCAS WERE CAPTURED AND SOLD TO MARINE PARKS In August 1970, TV cameras were on hand as seven orcas (killer whales) were captured off the coast of Seattle and taken to marine circuses like SeaWorld and the Miami Seaquarium. During the roundup, four orcas drowned in the nets, and diver John Crowe describes how he was in charge of secretly disposing of the dead orcas to avoid them being counted in the “take.”DAVID CASSELMAN

OUR TEAM | THE WHALE SANCTUARY PROJECT | BACK TO NATURE Dr. And while visitors can usually take a tour, there are no rides and no ORCA BRAINS AND INTELLIGENCE But this particular talk was less about the work of the Whale Sanctuary Project and more about her favorite topic: the evolution of orcas and other cetaceans, along with what we know about their remarkable brains and how, in many measures of brain development, they exceed the capacity of the human brain. As a neuroscientist whosespecialty is

Q&A WITH DR. LORI MARINO Yes, there wasn’t enough known about Iceland orcas at that time to find Keiko’s family. But one of the things Icelandic fish eating orca research has discovered in recent years is that their family structures and culture are very different than the close knit matrilineal pods of the Resident Orcas of the Salish Sea, which was the only family and cultural structure anyone knew about in the Skip to main content The Whale Sanctuary Project | Back to Nature* Our Work

WHO WE ARE
The Whale Sanctuary Project is working with you to establish a model seaside sanctuary where cetaceans (whales and dolphins) can live in an environment that maximizes well-being and autonomy and is as close as possible to their natural habitat. It is the first organization focused exclusively on creating seaside sanctuaries in North America for orcas and beluga whales who are being retired from entertainment facilities or have been rescued from the ocean and need rehabilitation or permanent care. In February 2020, after two years of researching hundreds of locations on the east and west coasts of North America, we selected Port Hilford, Nova Scotia, as the best site to create the sanctuary. And we have now begun site development. WHY A SEASIDE SANCTUARY FOR WHALES While there are sanctuaries for many land animals who are being retired from zoos and circuses, there are none yet for whales and dolphins. Without permanent sanctuaries, they will be confined to concrete tanks for the next 30–40 years, or as long as they live. Frequently asked questions >Meet the team >
