Animals transported for slaughter from across Europe through the Bulgarian-Turkish border. Turkey, 2018. Sheep inside a transport truck parked at the Bulgarian-Turkish border. THE SOUNDS OF A SLAUGHTERHOUSE The sound of a pig at a slaughterhouse is somewhere between a scream and a roar. Whirring industrial fans, beeping machinery, and shouting workers add to the hellish chaos. To get the terrified, shaking animals down the ramps, workers have to climb the truck railings and jab them repeatedly with electric prods. AN EXPOSE ON ANIMAL CLUBBING AT THAI SLAUGHTERHOUSES We are disconnected from what we eat and who we eat, and from the extent of suffering that billions of animals are subjected to. THE PIGS OF GOD: FORCE-FED THEN SLAUGHTERED FOR SPECTACLE Also known as ‘divine pigs’ or ‘god pigs’, these animals are reared to extraordinary weights and then sacrificed as part of annual festivities at a minority of temples across Taiwan. LIVE EXPORT: THE LONGEST JOURNEY We Animals Media’s Australian correspondent Anna Mackiewicz tracks live export from her homeland to the Middle East, and across bordersworldwide.
FIGHTING THE ODDS: BIG-HEARTED HELPERS MAINTAIN HOPE IN AUSTRALIA A billion animals is not a billion animals. A billion animals is one individual, and then another, and then another, and again another. In fire-ravaged Australia these last several months, they are the kangaroo succumbing to billowing flames and smoke. AN UNTOLD STORY OF DAIRY PRODUCTION For the past fifteen years, my work as an animal photojournalist has taken me through the world of dairy production, far beyond the marketing campaigns, and taught me an entirely different story aboutmilk.
GREEN NEW DEAL: A JUST TRANSITION FOR ANIMALS The kind of bold and substantial social changes needed to deal with the climate crisis is an opening to create a more just world. That justice can, and should, extend to animals. PROLONGING DEATH: THE PRACTICE OF FISH TETHERING IN ASIA In spite of what we now know about animal sentience, our priorities continue to lie in finding ways to maximize profit at their expense.PreviousNext
