PLAYGROUND FOR ADULTS Before I jumped on a plane to Bali I’d already seen pictures of the Bali Swing on Instagram. However when I asked about it while in Ubud, it turned out that The Bali Swing was not known by everyone. You can use a swing in Bali on various spots, yet my aim was to swing above the gorge as seen on pictures, not just somewhere in the middle of the rice fields. And so I jumped into a taxi that took me to The Bali Swing, located just about a 30 minute drive from Ubud. Upon arrival I found out that it had only been opened a few months earlier, so it wasn’t a coincidence that not everyone yet knew about it.Read more
GEIERLAY HANGBRUG
MUST DO IN GERMANY
Looking for a something fun to do in the German Hunsrück region? Then definitely consider the Geierlay suspension bridge. This suspension bridge in Germany is located in the Hunsrück just a three-hour drive from the Dutch-German border. I visited the bridge three times in recent years, the last time I even was completely alone. Below you will first find my original report and photos from August 2016, followed by updates and tips that I added following my second and most recent visit in May 2019. Enjoy reading!Read more
10 TIPS FOR FIRST TIMERS TRAVELING IN NEW-ZEALAND For nature that is. Most of us come to New Zealand because of the amazing landscapes and I will never forget what was written in the guestbook of the hostel I stayed in Auckland after arrival in my first trip. It said ‘please go to the South Island as soon as you can!’. Of course, we had unfortunately booked a return trip from AKL meaning we had to return up north and leave the South Island behind at some point, which made me ache to go back. The second time I went to New Zealand, I flew out of Christchurch, so your trip definitely ends with a bang of truly stunning nature.Read more

HIKE TO STRIPSENJOCHHAUS IN THE AUSTRIAN KAISERTAL Posted: 31 March 2020 In this article I’m sharing part two of our mini trek through the Kaisertal in Austria. In part 1 of this adventure I told you about the hike from Kufstein to the Anton Karghaus and how I saw the sun turning the rock formations of the Kaisertal orange at the end of the day. In part two I’ll tell you about the hike to Stripsenjochhaus and back to civilization. Breakfast in Anton Karghaus After a good breakfast at the Anton Karghaus it is time to pack our backpacks and strap them on again. Today a long hike is planned via the Höhenweg back to Kufstein. According to the weather forecast, it promises to be a very hot day today, so we will consider how long we want to walk later on. Immediately after our departure from the Anton Karghaus the trail goes up steeply, almost vertical. I’m just like a diesel and always need plenty of time to start up. In search of breath I climb up after Harry, who moves up through the shady forest without any problems. After an hour of climbing and 400 meters of altitude gain, we arrive at the tree line. After another 200 meters ascent we are on the Feldalmsattel. From the Feldalmsattel to Stripsenjochhaus It is incredibly warm today and very humid, too. Harry suggests that we can do two things: hike via the Höhenweg back to Kufstein, but then we’ll have to walk in full sun all day. Or we can hike to Stripsenjochhaus, grab a quick bite here and descend via the easy way back to Kufstein. We choose the second option, partly due to the humidity. Between the cows we head onwards to Stripsenjochhaus. This is a popular spot for climbers who want to climb famous peaks like Elmauer Halt and Goinger Halt. We pass a practice area for climbers and notice that it gets busier on the trails once near Stripsenjochhaus. It’s a weekend and the local are also heading out. On the terrace of Stripsenjochhaus We take a seat on the outdoor terrace of Stripsenjochhaus. Despite the clouds that cover the mountain peaks, it is warm enough to sit outside without a jacket. I order an Apfelstrudel and an Apfelschörle and am surrounded by super high rock formations. Hopefully one day I’ll be able to descend on the other side, to the famous Wilder Kaiser. Today, unfortunately, we have no time for that, we are going back to Kufstein. The trail from Stripsenjochhaus is quite steep down the first hour, then it becomes a gradually descending gravel path. We pass Anton Karghaus and Hinterbärenbad again and follow the road through the valley. The weather is getting more and more humid and I am glad we chose to descend into the shade. Our drinking water is running out, but fortunately we can top up at a source along the way. The prettiest valley in Tirol Every now and then we look over our shoulder and at the rocks that disappear further and further into the background. I am really amazed by the beauty of this valley and unfamiliarity with tourists. Most go to the Wilder Kaiser, the other side of the Kaisergebirge. However, if you want peace and space and unspoiled nature, the Kaisertal is a fantastic option! A good three hours after our departure from Stripsenjochhaus we are back at our hotel in Kufstein. In the evening the thunderstorms erupt in full force and the next day a thick cloud cover has gathered over the Kaiser Mountains. It is raining and so it is time to head home again. We’d love to come back here one day in the future! Day hike to Stripsenjochhaus Would you like to go on a day hike to Stripsenjochhaus without spending the night in Anton Karghaus? In four hours you can hike from Kufstein to Stripsenjochhaus, the way back takes about 3 hours and takes you along the same trail. On this page you’ll find alternative hikes to Stripsenjochhaus. Conclusion en disclaimer We made this trip in collaboration with the Austrian Tourist Board and the tourist office of Kufsteinerland. All opinions given are only our own. HIKING IN LECH AM ARLBERG – THE BEST HIKING TRAILS Posted: 27 March 2020 You may know Lech from our Royal family who goes skiing here every year. It is a place that carries the image “where the elite come” and for good reason, it is one of the best winter sports areas in Austria. However, Lech is also a beautiful area in the summer, but still relatively unknown. That makes it very special go hiking in Lech! S few year back I was in Vorarlberg and took several hikes here that do-able for everyone who a basic condition. Here are my tips for summer hiking in Lech and nearby Zürs: Spullersee and Ravensburger Hütte The most popular hike in Lech is the one that starts at the Spullersee. This lake is located at an altitude of 1,826 meters and can only be reached by bus, which takes you along a narrow winding road into a remote valley. Here lies at the very end where you can go no further the Spullersee: an emerald green mountain lake where you can do some beautiful hiking. Although there are several hiking trails near the Spullersee, the most beautiful hike you can make is along the lake to the Ravensburger Hütte. From here you can go back to Zug or Lech by a simple descent. Along the way you should stop for a bit of Kaiserschmarrn at the hut, but of course you can also order other typical Austrian delicacies. From the hut you’ll climb to the Stierlochjoch at 2,009 meters and finally you start the descent back to Zug. This is nowhere difficult and takes you from the mountain meadows through a lush forest to a beautiful waterfall. From here you reach the golf course and the village of Zug. Ultimately it is a fairly flat walk back from here along the river to Lech. Duration of the hike: approx. 4 hours Distance: 12.5 km Starting point: Spullersee End point: Zug or Lech Difficulty: easy The Green Ring The Green Ring is a relatively new hike near Lech. The idea is based on De White Ring, a 22-kilometer ski route where you make more than 5,500 meters in about three hours. Because this White Ring is extremely popular in winter, a Green Ring has been developed for the summer period. I hiked route 1 from Rüfikopf to Zürs. The Rüfikopf is located at an altitude of 2,362 meters and is one of the most famous mountains in Lech. You take the cable car up from the valley station in the center of Lech and once at the top follow the hiking path towards Zürs. Note: you do not come across the name Green Ring, I was confused for a while. Bring a hiking map and description and you’ll be fine! It soon becomes clear why this hike is called the Green Ring, because you walk above the tree line in a particularly green environment. Also for this hike, it doesn’t get really difficult anywhere, only I had to search now and then because the markers were missing here and there. The most beautiful part of the hike is the part between the Rüfikopf and the Monzabonalpe, from here it is really only down the gravel road (and a piece of asphalt). From Zürs you can take the bus back to Lech or you can walk onwards. Duration of the hike: approx. 2.5 hours Distance: 7 km Starting point: Rüfikopf End point: Zürs Difficulty: medium Hike from Zürs to Lech If you want to extend the first stage of the The Green Ring or just take a nice trip from Zürs to Lech, choose the hiking trail from Zürs to Lech. You just follow the signs and in the end you can choose various roads back to Lech, I myself walked through Omesberg because my hotel was here. You then walk along the river, then through a forest and almost only descend. Please note: Zürs is completely closed in the summer, so food and drinks are only available in Lech. Duration of the hike: approx. 2 hours Distance: 6 km Starting point: Zürs End point: Lech Difficulty: easy Oberlech – Lech A nice short walk that everyone can do is the one from Oberlech to Lech, a trip of less than an hour. I took the Oberlech cable car to the part of Lech higher up the mountain. From here I wanted to continue to Petersboden, but unfortunately the weather was very bad. I decided to go to Oberlech and walk down from here. On the way I had a beautiful view of the village and the famous Omesberg. Duration of the hike: approx. 1 hour Distance: 4 km Starting point: Oberlech mountain station End point: Lech center Difficulty: easy Hiking in Lech: transportation tips All mentioned walks at Lech and Zürs are one way. To get to the starting point or back from the ending point, I recommend using the Lech-Card . This card costs 23 euros (2020) for 3 days and can be purchased with a minimum stay of three consecutive nights in the village. You can use this card unlimited with the cable cars (including those to Rüfikopf and Oberlech) and with the bus that connects all the villages mentioned. You also have access to the swimming pool in Lech, you can participate in various theme walks and you get free entrance to various museums. These were the most beautiful hikes in Lech and Zürs. Of course I have not done all of them and have also received other tips from readers, including the tour at the Körbersee and the Lechweg. Unfortunately I was only in the area for a day and a half in and so I had no time to do further hiking. I advise you to get the free hiking guide ‘Worlds of Hiking’ from the tourist office, where all the above routes plus much more are described in detail. I no longer needed an official hiking map because of this, at least not for the hikes in Lech I mentioned in this article! Is Lech expensive? Lech is of course known for being an expensive winter sports resort. Nevertheless, summer tourism is still quiet in this region and there are considerably fewer tourists in the summer months than in winter. Many hotels are closed in the summer, the village of Zürs is even completely closed during the summer months. During my stay in Lech I stayed in the charming Hotel Omesberg. For other things, the prices in Lech are not too bad, for a coffee with apple strudel on in a local bar I paid € 7.50, slightly more expensive than usual. In addition to hotels, there are several apartments that you can rent, so you can cook for yourself and keep the costs for meals low. View the wide range of accommodations in Lech here. So is hiking in Lech worth spending your summer vacation? I’d say yes! It is considerably quieter than in winter and I also found the hiking trails a lot quieter than in other Austrian regions that I have visited in recent years. In addition, there are a lot of hiking opportunities, so you as an outdoor enthusiast will certainly not get bored here. Finally, you can also make trips from Lech to Bregenz for example. Conclusion and disclaimer Here I’ll end my blog about hiking in Lech and around. I hope that I have provided you with a good dose of inspiration and that you ever travel to Lech in the summer, it is more than worth it! I made this trip at the invitation of Visit Vorarlberg. All opinions given are, of course, only my own. This article contains affiliate links. When you make a purchase or make a reservation through such a link, I may receive a modest commission for you at no extra cost. HIKING IN AUSTRIA: THE 10 BEST HIKING TRAILS Posted: 27 March 2020 If, like me, you are a huge fan of Austria and hiking, then you will absolutely enjoy reading this article. I’ve collected the most beautiful hikes in Austria that I have made over the past 10 years. I try to go travel to Austria once a year, usually in the summer. If I can’t make it on the summer, then I’ll go in winter. Since not everyone is an experienced mountain hiker, I have also chosen some easy hiking routes in Austria. Happy reading and I hope you’ll find some inspiration for your future trips to Austria here! The Gaisalmsteig A fun and easy hike for anyone who loves being outdoors is the Gaisalmsteig at the Achensee. This lake is located in Tyrol, just across the border with Austria. I have been coming to the Achensee since I was four years old and it is still one of my favorite destinations in Austria, also because of its youth sentiment. Having said this, I can truly recommend the walk on the Gaisalmsteig along the Achensee. You can walk the route, which starts in Pertisau, back and forth on the same trail, but it is more fun to take the boat up to the other end and then walk back towards the village. The detailed blog of this hike on the Gaisalmsteig can be found here. Hike to Ravensburgerhütte One of the most popular hikes in the Vorarlberg region is the hike from Spullersee via Ravensburgerhütte back to Lech. This four-hour hike is done as a single journey, you take the hiker bus from Lech to the Spullersee and from here you hike on a relatively easy trail to the Ravensburgerhütte. Ejoy a delicious Kaiserschmarn or other Austrian delicacy here on the outdoor terrace if the weather allows. From the hut you cross the Stierlochjoch at 2,009 meters and eventually you’ll descend via a beautiful waterfall back to Lech. More tips for hiking in Lech are in this article. Kaiser-Frans-Josef-Höhe to Heiligenblut At the base of the Grossglockner, Austria’s highest mountain, lies Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe, a panoramic point on the Grossglockner Alpine Road. From here you have a beautiful view over the highest mountain in Austria and the largest glacier in Austria: Pasterze. This place worth seeing is also the starting point of the Alpe Adria Trail, a long-distance hike that takes you from mountain (Alpe) via Italy to the sea (Adria) in Slovenia. Heiligenblut is a tourist village at the base of the Grossglockner and known for its Gothic church that is pictured on many postcards with the snowy peaks of Höhe Tauern National Park in the background. To do this hike, take the bus to Kaiser-Frans-Josef-Höhe and hike back to Heiligenblut in about 5-6 hours. First along the terminal moraine of Pasterze, then through alpine meadows and finally through a coniferous forest. Because you descend more than 800 meters, this hike is a nice touch on the knees but more than worth the effort. Seebachtal and Stappitzer See Mallnitz is a quiet village in Carinthia. A beautiful but easy hike that you can take here is the one through the Seebachtal to the Stappitzer See. This beautiful green lake is located at the end of the valley and is ideal for hiking. You pass the Schwußner Hütte where you can sit on the outdoor terrace and optionally after your hike, take the cable car up to the Ankogel. A wonderful and easy walk in Carinthia. Krimmler Wasserfälle The Krimmler Waterfall is the highest staged waterfall in Europe, with a total height of 380 meters. A 4-kilometer hiking trail runs along the falls, relatively steeply uphill. Although it can be relatively busy in high season (tip: be on time so that you can walk before the crowds) the immense water violence is really impressive and the falls are more than worth a visit. More information can be found in this online brochure. The prettiest mountain lakes in Austria next to the highway Along the Fernpass, the main route from Germany to Italy, you will find a series of small mountain lakes. As far as I’m concerned they are some of the most beautiful in Austria. They are the Blindsee, the Mittersee and the Weissensee. These are connected by easy walking trail. The further you get away from the parking lot at Blindsee, the nicer and quieter it gets. Tip: take this walk early in the morning so that it is still quiet and you can enjoy the beauty in silence. In this article you can read the detailed route description and more information. The Coburger Hütte hike When you go hiking in Austria it is always nice to hike to a mountain hut. And the best part is that this is certainly not only possible for extremely experienced hikers. Earlier I mentioned the Ravensburgerhütte, but the Coburger Hütte in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena is also a nice destination for a day hike in Austris. Because you’ll ascend to the mountain meadows with the local cable car, you will soon be high in the mountains. From here you can hike on a simple or difficult trail to the hut. I did the difficult version up and the easier one back to the mountain station of the Ehrwalder Alm Bahn. You can read all about it in this article about my hike to the Coburger Hütte. A hike through the Kaisertal You’ve probably heard of the Wilder Kaiser before, but did you know that the Kaisertal is also very beautiful? This is the valley on the other side of the Kaisergebirge and is a lot quieter than the more popular Wilder Kaiser. I made a two-day hike here to Anton Karghaus, but you can also do some beautiful day walks from the village of Kufstein. Here you take the chair lift up and then you can walk via the Gamskogel and the Bettlersteig to the Anton Karghaus. Take a piece of Apfelstrudel here on the terrace and descend via the wide gravel trail back to the valley. Or better … spend the night in the hut and watch the sunset on the rocks. An experience of a lifetime for sure! You can read more about this easy two day hike in this article. Trek on the Berliner Höhenweg Looking for a multi-day hike in Austria? Then the Berliner Höhenweg is a must. This long-distance hike usually takes you 6 days, but the great thing about it is that you can descend from any hut en route back to the valley and thus determine your own lenght. I made a 4-day hiking trip myself: Day 1: Finkenberg – GamshütteDay 2: Gamshütte – FriesenberghausDay 3: Friesenberghaus – FurtschagelhausDay 4: Furtschagelhaus – Berliner Hütte After an overnight stay I descended into the valley from the Berliner Hütte. Please note: this hike is only suitable for experienced hikers who are surefooted. Even as an experienced hiker, I sometimes had a hard time with the steep drop offs below me and the narrow trail. However, the scenery is stunningly beautiful and I can definitely recommend this hike (or a part of it) to anyone who likes to go mountain hiking in Austria. You can find more information about the stages on this Visit Tirol website. Conclusion and disclaimer Hopefully you enjoyed this article and I gave you new ideas for beautiful hikes in Austria. HIKING INSPIRATION
EVEREST BASE CAMP TREK OR ANNAPURNA BASE CAMP TREK Let me start by saying that both treks are tough and should not be underestimated. If you have no experience in trekking, you will have to carry lots of stamina and willpower in order to make it to either basecamp. It’s not easy but not impossible either. Which of the two is the most difficult is hard to say and really depends on various factors. If we look at altitude, Everest Base Camp Trek is definitely the most challenging reaching 5.364 meters above sea level. If you decide to trek via Gokyo, which I strongly recommend so you won’t have to hike the same route twice, you will have to cross Cho-La Pass which is even higher and reaches as high as 5.420 meters. Annapurna Base Camp is located at 4.130 meters above sea level, meaning you need less time to acclimatize. HIKING IN EUROPE: 12 OF THE BEST HIKING TRAILS Iregularly have discussions with friends about whether you have to travel far away (= outside of Europe for me) every year. Not only because of the flying embarrassment that seems to be on the rise, but also because there are plenty of nice walks in Europe. You don’t always have to go far to see beautiful landscapes. Need inspiration? Then read on in this article with the beste places to hike in Europe, from north to south. All trails have been made by myself so I only advise you from my own experience, as you are used to from me. Enjoyreading and hiking!

SAFE SOLO HIKING AS A FEMALE: MY TIPS AND TRICKS When planning to hike a long(ish) track, it’s wise to figure out as much as you can about the trail. What the distance is, how to get to the start and end and what the current trail situation is. Many of these things can be found online nowadays and by doing some research beforehand you can avoid unpleasant surprises along the way. Such as not carrying enough drinking water or having to make a river crossing. But also there may be ferries that are not running on certain days or the bus service you may need could be limited on certain days. All these things can be found out well in advance. THE BEST HIKES IN TASMANIA We found another hiking paradise and it’s called Tasmania. Located on the opposite part of the world for us, we spent a month here, exploring what Australians call ‘the Apple Island’ by foot and by bike. We knew that Tasmania had some pretty spectacular scenery to offer but we kept on being surprised over and over again by the diversity of this place. One day we’d stand with our feet in the sand on some stunning beach and the next day we’d be in a rain forrest discovering the prettiest little waterfalls. When you are going hiking here, there is no way you will get disappointed. Here is our selection of the best hikes in Tasmania! A GUIDE TO THINGS TO DO AT CRATER LAKE NATIONAL PARK For me, a visit to Crater Lake National Park had been on my bucketlist for many years. Being from The Netherlands it’s not nearly as well known and popular as other US National Parks such as The Grand Canyon or Yellowstone National Park. However, after hearing about this place from a friend, I knew I wanted to go here one day. I kept on googling Crater Lake National Park year after year, at some point I knew it was my time to head on another trip to the US and go for it. And so I finally got to visit Crater Lake National Park after wanting to go forsuch a long time.
