PAINT FOR WOOD & CANVAS CANOES Repainting canoes is done all the time, with all kinds of paints. Most use an oil based paint, and many use “marine” paints. Some use various other paints intended for exterior use – house paint, porch and deck paint, etc. Oil-based gloss paints are most commonly used. Water-based paints can work, as can semi-gloss paints. OLD TOWN CANOE? SERIAL NUMBER SEARCH Greg Nolan enthusiast. The Old Town canoe with serial number 12801 is a 17 foot long, CS (common sense or standard) grade HW (hravy wateer) model with red western cedar planking, spruce gunwales and ash decks, seats, and thwarts, spruce finish rails, outside stems and equipped with a keel. It was built between November 1909 and April 1910. ALDER STREAM CANVAS, CUSTOM PACKS, DUFFLE BAGS, CANOE has been designing, and making hand crafted canvas packs and bags for almost 30 years. In Kingfield, Maine we make canvas packs, duffels, totes, shoulder bags, briefcases and bags using high quality canvas, leather, copper rivets, and brass grommets. HOW TO REMOVE PAINT STRIPPER RESIDUE? What do you folks use to remove the goop produced when using a paint/varnish stripper? I used to use mineral spirits, but stopped when had a bad experience with very dark wood - I figured the spirits carried 'dark stuff' deep into the wood where cleaners & wood brighteners couldn't reach. HOW MUCH IS MY OLD WOODEN CANOE WORTH? Tim Hewitt's responses over the years have included the following comments: Any wooden or wood/canvas canoe in usable condition is worth $1000 - $1500. A canoe that is documentable will go on the high end, one that is particularly rare will bring more, up to $3000 for a wood canvas canoe, and as high as $5000 for an all-wood canoe. BUILD RECORDS REQUEST The Old Town canoe with serial number 179040 is a 16 foot long Otca model with a keel. It was built between September and November, 1967. The original exterior paint color was red. STEAM BENDING IN A POLYETHYLENE TUBE The next morning I put the first inwale in a length of poly tube and laid it level on the horses on which the canoe was sitting, feeding the steam into one end. This produced two problems. First, most of the steam cooled and condensed before it reached the far end of the tube, so the far end of the new inwale did not get enough hot steam. You're much better off with canvas for the reasons mentioned. Just so that you'll know, fiberglassing a rib and plank hull is also a very tricky proposition due to dents from tacks and the small spacesbetween planks.

STALEK CANOE RESTORATION 1st was to remove the keel. I did this for two reasons, 1st & most importantly, there is the evidence of water (blackening of the wood) under the epoxy. 2nd was to help it sit flat on the horses. Next is removal of the gunwales. They also have the dark water spots & definite rot on both ends.
