WAI IN 'RE-IMAGINING THE AVANT-GARDE' GROUP SHOW AT BETTS PROJECT,LONDON
On the occasion of the release of AD 'Re-Imagining the Avant-Garde' Issue Betts Project in London opens an eponymous exhibition with works by Ant Farm, Pablo Bronstein, Matthew Butcher, Peter Eisenman, Sam Jacob, Damjan Jovanovic, Office Kovacs, Perry Kulper, Jimenez Lai/Bureau Spectacular, Nemestudio, Luke Caspar Pearson, Aldo Rossi, Traumnovelle, Neil Spiller, UrbanLab, WAI Thinktank, Warehouse of Architecture and Research (WAR) Opening reception & book launch: Thursday 21 November, 6 — 8 pmExhibition:
22 November — 21 December 2019 Betts Project presents ‘a new exhibition that explores the ongoing importance of the work of Architects associated with the Avant-Garde of the 1960s and 1970s for today’s designers and artists. The exhibition has been developed as a companion to the recently published special issue of Architectural Design (AD) edited by Matthew Butcher and Luke Pearson entitled ‘Re-imagining the Avant-Garde: Revisiting the Architecture of the 1960s and 1970s’. The avant-garde of the 1960s and 70s has been likened to an ‘architectural Big Bang’, such was the intensity of energy and ambition with which it exploded into the post-war world. It produced architectural projects that redefined the discipline and remain highly influential today. In contemporary design, references to the likes of Archizoom, Peter Eisenman, John Hejduk and Superstudio continue to define the approaches of a new wave of practitioners. This avant-garde was highly diverse, and not tied to a single methodology or tendency in its political, formal and cultural preoccupations. It was also geographically divergent – reaching from Europe to North America and Japan. The avant-garde was, however, unified as a critical and experimental force, critiquing contemporary society against the backdrop of extreme social and political upheaval. Those turbulenttimes mirror today.
The intention of the exhibition ‘Re-Imagining the Avant-Garde’ is not to create a new history in the typical sense but to highlight the continuing power and relevance of ‘avant-garde projects for contemporary art and architectural practice. It will show a range of artists and designers whose work has developed a clear relationship, formally, spatially and conceptually, with this earlier period. The diverse works shown in the exhibition all resonate with certain attributes that defined the designs of the 1960s and 1970s. These attributes include an interest in distortions of cartographic representations, an interest in exploiting new media in the representation of architecture, the design of worlds that satirically comment on current political, environmental and social discourse and a desire to readapt historical forms and figures to question contemporary cultural attitudes to taste. This exhibition is also accompanied by a series of talks that are taking place throughout November and December at the Sir John Soane’s Museum and at Betts Project. WAI RECEIVES THE ANN KALLA PROFESSORSHIP AT CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY Nathalie Frankowski and Cruz Garcia will be the Ann Kalla Visiting Professors at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. From the CMU website: “Frankowski and García bring restless energy and keen criticality to their practice,” said Mary-Lou Arscott, studio professor and Associate Head of the SoA. “The school is fortunate to be welcoming the authors of WAI Architecture Think Tank into the school. Their work uses 2- 3- and 4D visuals with text comprising a narrative form to suggest newly imagined worlds that succeed in subverting conventional thinking with fierce poetic irony and insight. Their work is keenly engaged by contemporary issues while it slips in and out of agile references to a future-past.” During the Kalla Professorship, Frankowski and García will co-teach first-year studio with professor Mary-Lou Arscott in fall 2019, and teach an ASO studio entitled Hardcorist Lectores, and their Worldmaking Laboratories and spring seminar in spring 2020. They will also deliver a lecture during the School of Architecture’s Fall 2019 Lecture Series, and present an exhibition in spring 2020. Read more about WAI at CMU here.-----------------

WAI GUEST CURATES OFHOUSES WITH 'SEVEN HOUSES FROM OUR SELJONY GOROD' As Guest Curator of OfHOuses , WAI Think Tank presents 'Seven Houses from Our Seljony Gorod' “An indiscernible figure stands inside a room raised on stilts and a stair. The suited figure stares down from one of the units Moisei Ginzburg and Mikhail Barsch designed for Seljony Gorod, one of the Soviet Green Cities. The bare structure, like a decaying Narkomfin, stands as evidence that radical architecture is often found in precarious states. Falling apart, pieces of a larger system in a state of demise, these structures show how the more radical its ambition the more vulnerable architecture becomes. Similarly, the more socially universal its premise, in a continuing attempt to solve the living conditions of the masses, the more fragile and ephemeral the existence of architecture. Only decades later, those projects would re-surface only to be appreciated by the few in a melancholic and hypocritical dream of what could have been done. In that context, the search for the personal comfort of the individual or of small groups, despite structural or material marvels, in secluded anti-social confines, appears futile and misplaced given the conversation. When the current political environment strategically emphasizes the latter, as a physical and social attempt to divide the masses, how can we bring back the broader question of living together? With ourselves? With Nature? Can we devise ways for collective living not only for the betterment of our current society but, accepting our temporality, work towards the future of next generations now deep in the closing stages of the Anthropocene? After a hurricane, an earthquake, the rubble, flying debris makes the task of reconstruction almost impossible. The lack of collectivity exposes our vulnerability, we become a target to natural and political forces. The heroic ambition of architects shamed into oblivion has been paving the way to an ever expanding surface of social seclusion, dividing walls, deforestation, never ending sprawl. All we can do, is devise ways for more attempts at collectivity. More Narkomfins. We can only wish to be the indiscernible figures on those Seljony Gorods. In the background, Architectons floating aerously, a la Khidekel. These seven Houses are a compromise. A boxer taking a breather and thinking about her strategy to go out swinging. Last round, scorecards against her. Two of the houses (free section) address the question of collectivity against the status quo. Architectural form bending, zig-zagging to give way to the free section and the possibility of shared space. The other five (free nature) take on ‘nature’ as an architectural element. Buildings dematerializing literary blazed under the flames, or metaphorically as Tarkovskyan rooms, nature running through them, surrealist trunks posing as columns, blow by the wind, and in some instances powered by the sun. More about OfHouses. OfHouses is a daily updated collection of old forgotten houses. OfHouses publishes original material. OfHouses does not reblog. WAI INTERVIEWED BY KVNO RADIO NEWS ON POST-NOVIS Corbin Hirschhorn of KVNO News interviews WAI on the occasion of POST-NOVIS exhibition at Maple St. Construct, Omaha. From the Website:
While many institutions are gearing up to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the German Bauhaus Movement in art and architecture, Maple Street Construct’s exhibition opening tonight pays homage to to the parallel but lesser known movement, UNOVIS, from Vitebsk, Belarus. Architects and Professors Cruz García and Nathalie Frankowski of the University of Nebraska Lincoln have collaborated with their students to imagine a renaissance of the lost art school, titled, POST-NOVIS.
García, from Puerto Rico, and Frankowski, from France, met in Belgium in 2008, and formed the WAI Architecture Think Tank. Now teaching at UNL, they have worked with students and contributors to offer a new way of thinking about experiencing architecture. In the spirit of the UNOVIS Movement, POST-NOVIS challenges status quo ideas on architecture in that it is collaborative, inclusive, and a mix of various media. Most importantly, García and Frankowski call attention to a revolution in pedagogy. Audiences can expect an alternative way of experiencing architectural design in the gallery, as POST-NOVIS will feature 2d and 3d art, film, literature, and an indoor sculpture garden. The exhibition goes as far as to imagine what new movement in art and architecture might look like right here in Nebraska. POST-NOVIS opens tonight, February 1 at Maple Street Construct from 6:00 to 9:00pm. For more information, visit MapleStreetConstruct.com." Listen to the full interview at Radio KVNO.

WAI TO BE PART OF 'ARCHITECTURE IS EVERYTHING', AN EXHIBITION, WORKSHOP AND PUBLICATION AT CAMPO A collaboration between Alejandra Celedon, ecoLogicStudio, Umberto Napolitano(LAN Architecture), Theodore Spyropoulos (Minimaforms), Phineas Harper, Miraj Ahmed, Brendan Cormier, WAI Architecture Think Tank, Luca Molinari, Matteo Cainer, CAMPO will celebrate its 4th edition of the annual Workshop and Exhibition from the 7 to the 14 ofSeptember 2018.
About Architecture is Everything: "The architecture of our time is emerging, and is both redefining itself as a medium and expanding its field. Many field beyond traditional building are taking over architecture, just as architecture and architects are moving into fields that were once remote. Everyone is an architect. Everything is Architecture" In 1968, with just a thousand words and over 90 images Hans Hollein demolishes the boundaries of architecture with its famous manifesto Everything is Architecture. Borrowing the language of photography, journalism and advertisement and using artworks, objects and images of celebrities, Hollein collages anything from industrial design toastrophysics.
50 years after Hollein’s iconoclastic prophecy is fully realised. Architecture is completely dissolved into the dematerializing overflowof information.
Yet, seen from the fast and precarious contemporary condition the collages of the Viennese master open another horizon of liberation: what matters are not the objects but the space in between them, not the speed but the time between bits of information, not the data but the frame that gives meaning to experience and knowledge. What is left to design is the landscape which turns the commodities into totems of a spiritual, magic, erotic, collaborative, individual, ordinary, abstract and dirty life. Architecture is Everything.+++
This year CAMPO and Black Square join forces with Modelab and invite a group of contributors to select an object and describe, through a photograph and a text, the world, real or imaginary, that has producedit.
The participants to the workshop will depart from these objects, their images and their stories, to develop a narrative and to construct a physical model of the landscape that frames and gives them meaning. For a week we will gather in Rome, imagining the material translation of imaginary worlds, learning model-making techniques and exploring the city with its stratified and contradictory landscapes. Texts, models, and images, as well as the documentation of the fieldwork and of the model-making processes, will be featured in an exhibition opening in Rome 14 September 2018 and further collected ina publication.

Black Square is a publisher based in Milan and London. Modelab is a model-making atelier for art and architecture based inRome.

WAI THINK TANK STUDIOS AT UNL TO PRESENT VICTORIES OVER THE SUN AND AFTER THE CAMPUS: CONDENSERS! Graduate and third year students will present their projects to wrap up the semester at UNL. As part of the Narrative Architecture design research studio at the graduate level, students will present projects in radical relationship with the environment. As part of the third year presentations students will present their take on the Campus of Easy parts, with new buildings and landscape projects. After the Campus: Condensers! (Project Description)April 27, 1:00pm
Gallery-Architecture Hall While the Campus offers an idealized blueprint of ground occupation in order to find ways for architecture to affect directly the construction of society, the Social Condenser is the ultimate concretization of these values in building form. After the Campus of Easy Parts provided a test-ground for reclaiming the land in productive, active and balanced ways, a new adjacent development aims to take its values and integrate them to the future of collective living. Social Condensers are buildings that provide space for the intensification of human relations. Victories Over the Sun(Project Description)April 26, 1:00pm
Gallery-Architecture Hall The Anthropocene, that ultimate conquest of humankind over its environment, makes the technological utopia of the Cubo-Futurist “Victory over the Sun” more than a just a fantastic dream. The aforementioned Opera, in which humans harvest the Sun with their technology reveals not only the hope of total environmental control, but the greater impact of humans in everything they touch. In a deteriorating world architecture role is crucial. Victories Over the Sun explores through narrative architecture stories of architectures in radical relationship with their environment, technology, society, education, landscape and the cosmos.More info soon.

WAI EXHIBITION 'POST-COLONIAL ROOM' TO OPEN AT UNIVERSITY OFNEBRASKA-LINCOLN
WAI will present a Narrative Architecture installation on Fold Gallery (Rm 233) at the College of Architecture at the University ofNebraska-Lincoln.
More info on the exhibition: The history of the Avant-garde has been, like the history of Colonialism, one of struggles and emancipation. Often the product of subversive political and ideological forces, the plethora of avant-garde artistic practices found solace either in obliterating defeat or in the crushing victory of iron fists. Once unearthed, the genealogy of these movements reveals the not-so-subtle role of Futurist anxiety in the formulation of Fascism and the echoes of the red wedge beating the whites in order to help free (and threaten) entire continents from the grasps of antiquated forms of Imperialism. In resonance with its militaristic origins, the avant-garde exists somewhere between the conquered and the conqueror, between the distant gaze and bodily confrontation, between colonial structures, and the condition of post-colonialism. In the ‘Post-Colonial Room’, WAI Architecture Think Tank reflects on the history of the Avant-Garde as a tool for both, submission and liberation. The total installation uses Narrative Architecture to render the complex political, artistic, architectural, technological, ecological and anthropological characteristics of a post-colonial condition. The ‘Post-Colonial Room’ subverts the violent nature of a finite architectural space with militaristic (war room) and aesthetic (colonial room) origins, and questions the contemporary role of geopolitics, the construction of ecology, the aesthetic fetish of exotic environments and the romantic iconography of the avant-garde. In an ever warming world, the tropics are, once again subjected to environmental, economic, humanitarian and militaristic threats. Test grounds for phenomena of catastrophic dimensions, romantic landscapes are reimagined in new relationships with radical forms of ideological architecture. The ‘Post-Colonial Room’ dissects through diverse media the point where the literary descriptions of Alexander Von Humbolt intersect with the bucolic landscapes of Norton Bush, Frederic Edwin Church, and Joan Horitz Rugendas; the iconic avatars of Ivan Leonidov and Georgii Krutikov; and the paraphernalia of political players for more than a century of geopolitical transformations. ‘Post-Colonial Room’ is an exhibition by WAI Architecture ThinkTank

'BEAST MODE' RESEARCH STUDIO AT UNL TO PRESENT NARRATIVE ARCHITECTURES ON ECOLOGY AND CLIMATE Beast Mode is the first of two projects to be developed this semester by design research students working on the Narrative Architecture Studio. The project explores through Narrative Architecture the legacy, challenges, potential and limitations of iconic 20th century avant-garde and contemporary projects in the wake of ecological and climatic challenges facing the world today. In a world of pressing environmental issues, the project questions the central role of humans in the development of architectural thinking, and proposes scenarios in which other species reign supreme. In these narratives a series of contemporary ecological projects join seminal visions by Arata Isozaki, Ivan Leonidov, El Lissitzky, Georgii Krutikov, Ralph Erskine and Lazar Khidekel in order to redraw new world orders, and rethink the relationship between the built environment, ecology, climate and the animal kingdom. Following the representational characteristics of Narrative Architecture, new, and critical scenarios are visualized through collages, drawings, models, text, and moving images. Background

WAI TO BE PART OF BALKAN ARCHITECTURAL BIENNALE WITH PALACE OF FAILEDOPTIMISM
As part of the program of the Balkan Architecture Biennale, WAI Think Tank's Palace of Failed Optimism will be presented at Galerija ŠTABin Belgrade.
More on the exhibition: Today, in the context of market driven society, architectural practice is commonly perceived as a service, rather than a practice of conceiving space and relations. For this matter, as an act of rebellion, architecture seeks for new, different ways of practicing the issues of content regarding space andsociety.
Within contemporary conditions, initiating an architectural project without any predefined assignment whatsoever implies thinking and conceiving architecture as an opportunity to envisage and design spaces, structures and relations from a critical point of view, while at the same time seeking for the newness, which is immanent to architectural practice. The aim of this exhibition is to show a part of this production, and to offer a common ground for this rather unconventional practice of architecture. We see this exhibition as a chance to promote and expose new practices in and approaches to architectural design.-----------------

CURATED BY GARCIA FRANKOWSKI, YOU REALLY KNOW WHERE YOU ARE. FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORY. OPENS AT UNICORN CENTRE FOR ART, BEIJING Curated by WAI Think Tank directors, Garcia Frankowski, 'You really know where you are. For the First time in history' is an exhibition dealing with the legacy of utopia in unexpected dimensions. Juxtaposing the work of filmmakers, artists, writers, architects and photographers the exhibition raises questions about idealism andfailure.
About the exhibition: A hundred years after Aldous Huxley was hired as schoolmaster in Eton (where George Orwell was his pupil), the exhibition borrows its title from ‘A Brave New World’, one of the most important narratives of biotechnological determinism in the 20th century. ‘You Really know where you are. For the First time in history’ focuses on the point where media, identity, idealism and utopia converge. Images of fantasy and realism are embedded in dialogues and struggles that reveal the frugality of utopias and the surreal nature of current events. The exhibition includes works by Chen Wei, Li Zhengde, Tianzhuo Chen, Sebastian Alonso Bessonart, Lin Ke, Ada Sokol, Camille Ayme, Ju Anqi, Cristina Tufiño, Alessandro Rolandi, Jason Mena, Lena Tsibizova, Olga Rodina, Anastasia Soboleva, Oliver Haidutschek, Ophelia S. WAI AT UTOPIA / DYSTOPIA SHOW AT THE MAAT LISBON On Show until August 21 Utopia/Dystopia is the first “manifesto exhibition” at MAAT’s new building. Establishing a dialogue with the site-specific commissions at the museum’s Oval Gallery, these group shows present side by side works of artists and architects who, in their respective fields, have produced insights and critical reflections on crucial themes of our times. Echoing the 500th anniversary of Thomas More’s Utopia, the show reveals how the dichotomy between utopia and dystopia reflects a time of paradoxical acceleration, where anxiety and optimism collide. Today, technological developments stimulate expectations of enhanced connectivity and a better quality of life. However, cyclical crises also constantly disturb the social, political and ecological spheres. With utopian and dystopian narratives typically emerging in such troubled periods, artists and architects, writers or filmmakers are crucial in proposing contradictions and proposing illuminating new possibilities. Encompassing a wide range of ideas, from a profound reflexion on the downfall of Modernism to the current political scene, Utopia/Dystopia promotes a dialogue between more than 60 artworks and projects that present unique views on the subject since the early1970s.

By assembling a genealogy of key twentieth-century projects, Nathalie Frankowski and Cruz Garcia/WAI Architecture Think Tank reveal the subversive role and constructive potential of Narrative Architecture. The result is a retroactive manifesto that sheds light on a critical, although misunderstood, period of architectural history, and extends an invitation to embrace Narrative Architecture as a way to think and practice architecture as a critical project." WAI TO BE A PART OF 'UTOPIA/DYSTOPIA II' EXHIBITION AT THE MAAT MUSEU DE ARTE, ARQUITETURA E TECNOLOGIA LISBON WAI will be part of the upcoming exhibition at the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology in Lisbon. Curated by Pedro Gadanho, Joao Laia & Susana Ventura, the exhibition Commemorates the 500th year anniversy of Thomas More 'Utopia'.From the website:
Utopia/Dystopia is the first “manifesto exhibition” at MAAT’s new building.

WAI FEATURED ON CARTHA MAGAZINE, FOR THE LISBON ARCHITECTURE TRIENNALE 'Six Buildings on An Island or Planning for the Tropics' has been featured as part of Cartha Magazine issue on Aldo Rossi's The Architecture of the City. From the magazine:
Tout est forme, et la vie même est une forme.»Honoré de Balzac.
By teaching a child how to put little wooden shapes into correspondingly shaped holes, one could consider form as something that is absolutely defined. However the transitive of this title in itself suggests the malleability of form, of which the phenomenon of the city offers one of the best examples. The city is shape. The city is shaping shapes. But the city is also about rules and the defining of rules. Enough has been written on the topic of the city and our ambition here lies not in reassessing this topic in a completely new way. On the contrary, we consider one book to still be relevant as one of the best commentaries on the city and its cosmos. Exactly 50 years ago Aldo Rossi wrote his seminal work The Architecture of the City and suggested in the most dedicated, vague and yet convincing manner the ways in which the city is defined by shape. With his legendary ambiguity, Rossi believed in the permanence of form but also in its obsoleteness. We choose to dedicate this issue of CARTHA to the city, and to its architecture. Paying tribute to Rossi, we have borrowed the original structure from The Architecture of the City as a canvas, with the ambition of attempting to delineate their possible contemporary interpretation. Each author was attributed one of the 33 subtitles of the original book, and was given carte blanche to define the extent to which his or her contribution would directly relate to Rossi and to the topic assigned. The resulting contributions range from essays and critiques to project descriptions and images. The initial motivation was that the result would be as eclectic and fragmented as its source, while also emphasising the contemporaneity and universality of Rossi’s thoughts. Above all, this issue of CARTHA has the aspiration to represent a collective work, one that honours the collective formof form: the city.

WAI FEATUTED ON CLIMATES: ARCHITECTURE AND THE PLANETARY IMAGINARY, COLUMBIA BOOKS AND LARS MULLER PUBLISHERS 'Lazar Khidekel's Landscapes at the End of the World' is WAI contribution to Climates: Architecture and the Planetary Imaginary, a book giving a critical look at the environmental impact of architecture and the force exerted by the environment on architecturaland urban visions.
About the book:
Climates: Architecture and the Planetary Imaginary brings together writings and work at the intersection of architecture and climate change. Neither a collective lament nor an inventory of architectural responses, the essays in this volume consider the cultural values ascribed to climate, and ask particularly how climate figures, historically and at present, in our conception of what architecture is and does. What are the material and conceptual infrastructures that render climate legible, knowable, and actionable, and what are their spatial implications? How do these interrelated questions offer new vantage points on the architectural ramifications of climate change, extending and amplifying our understanding of ideas like resiliency, sustainabil-ity, and ecotechnology? These essays and projects offer new ways of understanding climate in architecture, both revealing and reacting to the exigencies of environment through design. Climates: Architecture and the Planetary Imaginary is a project of the Avery Review, a journal of critical essays about books, buildings, and other architectural media, produced by the Office of Publications at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, andPreservation.

WAI FEATURED ON GEM BARTON’S NEW BOOK ‘DON’T GET A JOB…MAKE A JOB : HOW TO MAKE IT AS A CREATIVE GRADUATE’ WAI has been featured in the chapter 'Question Everything', part of 'Don't Get a Job... Make a Job: How to make it as a creative graduate'a new publication by Gem Barton.About the Book:
Too often a design or architecture degree is seen as a means to an end (a job in an established practice). But imagine for one moment that there are no employers, no firms to send your CV to, no interviews to be had – what would you do? How would you forge your own path aftergraduation?
The current economic climate has seen many graduates chasing a finite number of positions. The most ingenious and driven designers have found weird and wonderful ways of making opportunities for themselves, often by applying their skills across the creative disciplines of art, design, architecture and interiors. Knowing what you want from your design career and being able to adapt your strategy to suit is basic and vital – just like in the wild, designers need to evolve. The book celebrates the various strategies that students and graduates are taking to gain exposure, while also including interviews and inspirational advice from those who are now enjoying success as a result of their creative approach to employment.Paperback
