The peninsular state of Qatar is, in some respects, a modern creation. However, the land itself shows evidence of habitation over millennia. The first evidence of sustained human settlement in Qatar dates to the 6th millennium BCE, in the form of small, isolated farmsteads, stone tools and decorated pottery.
