During 1986-2000, we released 70 juvenile Bald Eagles at our Big Sur wildlife sanctuary. Our goal was to establish a population of four adult breeding Bald Eagle pairs, in the hopes of creating a self-sustaining population. At our last count, we found 30 nesting territories. The wild Bald Eagle population is thriving! VWS HOME - VENTANAWS.ORG VWS Home. . CALIFORNIA CONDOR CAMS IN BIG SUR The Condor Sanctuary is located two miles east of the Pacific Ocean in Big Sur, California. The sanctuary is surrounded by pristine US Forest Service lands, which are visible in the background of the Sancturay Cam. Ventana Wildlife Society has been releasing captive-bred condors to Big Sur, California since 1997. 1031 INIKO - VENTANA WILDLIFE SOCIETY As Redwood Queen rose to the task of being a single parent, a new challenge emerged. An unmated male condor attacked the nest, possibly seeing an opportunity to claim a vacant territory. Iniko was force-fledged from the nest during the scuffle. Redwood Queen fought off the intruder, but Iniko’s prospects seemed dim huddled there onthe ground

Rumsen Ohlone Tribal Community Member - Monterey, California. A descendant of indigenous peoples of the central California coast, Linda was part of a group asked to suggest names for seven young condors released in San Simeon in late 2020. Linda stated, “We are honored that these condors will carry a reminder of our people with them - that our ancestors cared for these lands and that we #444 "VENTANA" IN MEMORIAM At the time of her death, Ventana was the oldest living wild-raised chick in the Central California flock. She was truly invaluable to the condor recovery effort in that she did not grow up in captivity and was raised in the wild by condor foster parents with minimal humanintervention.
#703 "HADES" IN MEMORIAM Condor #703 stood out in his cohort because he was always trying to perch in places where biologists could not see him. Because of this he was named Hades, whose name means "the unseen one". His luxurious, dark ruff is reminiscent of his namesake's cloak of darkness - this secretive bird was a challenge to track after his release, as heenjoyed

By the 1980s, the California Condor population was in crisis, and extinction in the wild seemed imminent. The dramatic decline of condors in the 20th century has been attributed to shooting, poisoning, electric power lines, egg collecting, and habitat loss.MY CONDOR BIOS

#167 "KINGPIN" IN MEMORIAM Since #164's death in 2005, Kingpin has been the most dominant member of our Big Sur flock. This means that he gets first choice of food and that he frequently disciplines other condors lower in the hierarchy. . Kingpin paired with Condor #190 in 2006 and they established a breeding territory that spring. In 2007, the pair started nesting in #199 "THE GREAT ONE" IN MEMORIAM As The Great One got older, he showed more interest in the Big Sur backcountry and especially in his mate, Condor #231.Together, they raised their biological chick, Condor #477, in the wild. He later paired with #438 and continued to be a successful nester, producing chick #789. Admittedly, our initial expectations of The Great One werenot
