GAMING HOW-TO: CONNECT YOUR PS3 TO A PC MONITOR Open up the sound control panel in Windows. Find the Line-In device, select it, and hit “Properties.”. HOW-TO: ENABLE COMPLETE FULL ROOT SHARING IN WINDOWS 7 To get the sharing done, we have to right click on the drive, click Properties, then navigate to the Sharing tab. Because we’re attempting to share an entire drive, and not just a folder, Windows 7 disables the simple “Share” button (see below), so we must click Advanced Sharing and then click “Share this folder” checkbox. WINDOWS 7, WINDOWS\CSC, MANAGE OFFLINE FILES & THE SYNC After restarting, I clicked “View your offline files” and went into mapped drives, right clicked and unchecked “Make available offline.”. Windows then proceeded to comb through every single file in the \CSC directory, I can only guess that it was changing some flag on each file. TOP 5 FREE ONLINE STORAGE REVIEWS I’ve got a lot of data. For me, storage is critical. As I mentioned in my previous article on how to archive large files on SkyDrive, sometimes I want to move files to the cloud for an extended duration of time or permanent archive. It’s good practice to keep a copy of critical data off-site to prevent against theft, fire, earthquakes, human error, and whatever other paranoia you can come NOTHIN’ NEW TO SEE HERE I registered VariableGHz.com in 2006 when I realized that I solve a lot of esoteric technical challenges. Solving these challenges are routinely necessary as part of the work I do, especially these days asa consultant.

TRIP REPORT: AGE OF CONAN (PART 2) It’s been two weeks since my first report on the world of Hyboria. In that time, I’ve traversed a wide variety of sprawling frontiers, met a colorful cast of characters, gone to-to-toe in enjoyable combat against all sorts of disreputable scoundrels, and enjoyed what is likely the most impressive game soundtrack I’ve heard this year. GETTING SERIOUS ABOUT VNC Hold down the Windows Key on your keyboard, and press R to bring up the Run dialog box. Type cmd and press enter. CMD is, as far as I know, short for “command,” since the command prompt is where you, well, type commands. For a while (in XP I believe) you can type cmd or command to execute the command prompt. I decided on the Celluon LaserKey CL850 because it is the latest laser virtual keyboard and it supports a USB connection, unlike the CL-800BT which only supports bluetooth. I felt compelled to write this review because every other review I saw had awful low-res out of focus photos and didn’t show the product in enough detail.VARIABLEGHZ

WINDOWS HOME SERVER IS INCREDIBLY AWKWARD What some of them say is the “it just works” thing. But he’s also an apple fanboy, so it figures. I think Also, the faux-RAID thing is probably just another one of those “convenience” features, considering a lot of motherboards nowadays have onboard RAID, amd RAID would actually give a performance gain. POWER SAVER, BALANCED, OR HIGH PERFORMANCE? This was very helpful! I keep noticing my battery’s performance dying out. I have a HP notebook, and using the battery checkup feature the charging capacity has come down to 89%..it hardly lasts for hour and half and charge falls rapidly every 2 minutes. HOW-TO: MAKE USE OF ULTRAVNC SC (SINGLE-CLICK) 10. Highlight all the files and create a *.zip file. Call it whatever you want (do not have a folder inside of the *.zip, just the data). 11. Now, we need to “compile” the .exe with the UltraVNC SC website. So, head on over to the “Online Creator” section of theirsite.

THE PORT-FORWARD-PODCAST Welcome to the Port-Forward-Podcast. Below you will find the master repository of all the episodes of the podcast. Well? What are youwaitin’ for?
HOW-TO: MAKE USE OF ULTRAVNC SC (SINGLE-CLICK) 10. Highlight all the files and create a *.zip file. Call it whatever you want (do not have a folder inside of the *.zip, just the data). 11. Now, we need to “compile” the .exe with the UltraVNC SC website. So, head on over to the “Online Creator” section of theirsite.
GAMING HOW-TO: CONNECT YOUR PS3 TO A PC MONITOR Open up the sound control panel in Windows. Find the Line-In device, select it, and hit “Properties.”. Make sure “Listen to this device” is checked, and that “Playback through this device” is the same as your current Line-Out device (usually referred to Output). Hit “OK” and exit the control panel. REVIEW | VARIABLEGHZ I’m not one to be easily confused by UI decisions. Comfortable with the command-line, and having used dozens upon dozens of different distributions of Linux, and nearly every version of Windows since 3.11 for Workgroups (and MS-DOS before that, v. 6.22) — I can’t say I’ve ever seen anything like Windows 8. Granted, that’s how Microsoft wants it to be perceived. JUNE | 1911 | VARIABLEGHZ In celebration of officially naming the podcast, we discuss the port forwarding a bit, inbound and outbound ports & NAT (Network Address Translation) then smoothly segway into discussing Microsoft’s new “Safety” single-use executable virus scanner which completely failed to detect the fake anti-virus program “Vista Home 2011” which was oh-so-cleverly executed from the task manager WOW, WINDOWS 8 IS REALLY AWKWARD (REVIEW) I’m not one to be easily confused by UI decisions. JULY | 1911 | VARIABLEGHZ In this episode we introduce a new podcaster, the all around power house, Merrick and go on to discuss: the checking of hashes of .IPA files for viruses (more on this in Episode #12), a bit about version control, being the all-in-one family tech support guy (e.g., you), samba \\sharing issues and “nblookup,” a legendary MobileMe iPhone tracking story, symbolic links on Windows and Linux WINDOWS 7, WINDOWS\CSC, MANAGE OFFLINE FILES & THE SYNC After restarting, I clicked “View your offline files” and went into mapped drives, right clicked and unchecked “Make available offline.”. Windows then proceeded to comb through every single file in the \CSC directory, I can only guess that it was changing some flag on each file. Once it was finished, I then right clicked again and CELLUON LASERKEY CL850 REVIEW Yeah, I had to buy this. No, it wasn’t necessary. I decided on the Celluon LaserKey CL850 because it is the latest laser virtual keyboard and it supports a USB connection, unlike the CL-800BT which only supports bluetooth. I felt compelled to write this review because every other review I saw had awful low-res out of focus photos and didn’t show the product in enough detail. COMPUTING IS GETTING WORSE The state of user interfaces has reached the point of diminishing returns. In retrospect, it is clear that many user interfaces reached their peak balance of ease and complexity in 2007. WHY WINDOWS VISTA (SP1+) IS BETTER THAN WINDOWS 7 At work, at home, and for my clients. I am going to make an argument in this article as to why I believe that Vista remains superior. I challenge someone to list 7 reasons why Windows 7 is better than Windows Vista. Actual reasons. “Features” like Aero Snap, Jump Lists, and the new taskbar do not necessitate an entirely newoperating system
WHY I STILL AVOID WINDOWS VISTA’S UAC I remember beta testing Windows 95 when it was code-named Chicago. Back then, I was running MS DOS 6.22 and running Microsoft Windows forWorkgroups 3.11.

Something curious happened during Microsoft’s PDC in 2003 (See ‘_geeks bearing gifts _‘). They unveiled the then-exciting and anticipated Longhorn operating system that was powered in large part by the GPU. That is, each “window” of Windows would no longer be rendered in software. They would be rendered as full 3D planes using the GPU.Continue Reading >>
COMPUTING IS GETTING WORSE Posted by :Samuel On : February 5, 20132

The state of user interfaces has reached the point of diminishing returns. In retrospect, it is clear that many user interfaces reached their peak balance of ease and complexity in 2007. Since then, it seems that balancing new features has been a very difficult task for many companies. There’s a curious trend to hide functionality to an obsessive degree that inhibits average users from being able to _find_ often rather obviously necessary features. The learning curve continues to grow tremendously despite the superficial trend towards“simplicity.”

PC ER: DOWNGRADING WINDOWS ON AN ASUS U47A Posted by :Samuel On : February 4, 20133
Category: Featured ,How-To , PC ER
IT’S WORSE THAN I THOUGHT. The new ASUS U47A comes with a whole host of “security” features to prevent downgrading of the operating system, Windows 8.
This particular U47A system was purchased in preparation for a federal criminal trial in Las Vegas in which I will be relying heavily on the system to serve up dense amounts of information. I learned my lesson from my last case to not rely on Windows 8 (more on that later), so, downgrading was part of the plan all along. ASUS’ position that “No,downgrading from Windows 8 to Windows 7 is not an option,” was unacceptable for me.Continue Reading >>
