USMEF EXPORTER COMMITTEE REPORT : U.S. MEAT EXPORT FEDERATION The USMEF Exporter Committee met on May 26 during the USMEF Board of Directors Meeting and Product Showcase in St. Louis. USMEF staff liaison Paul Clayton opened the meeting by summarizing three USMEF resolutions that were scheduled for sunset at this meeting. START WITH 15 CHEFS FROM MEXICO AND 12 FROM THE CARIBBEAN Start with 15 chefs from Mexico and 12 from the Caribbean, add U.S. red meat, a dash of creativity and a handful of competition. The result is flavorful dishes featuring U.S. beef, pork and lamb cooked up at the Sixth Annual U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) Chef Competition held last week at the renowned Le Cordon Bleu Academy inMexico.
EVENTS SHOWCASE U.S. BEEF’S LONG-AWAITED RETURN TO CHINA On June 30 in Beijing, the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) participated in a media reception marking the return of U.S. beef to China. U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue and U.S. Ambassador to China Terry Branstad addressed attendees, along with National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) President Craig Uden, a cattle feeder and rancher from Elwood, Nebraska. THE U.S. MEAT EXPORT FEDERATION (USMEF) ELECTED AS The U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) elected as chairman for 2004-2005 Alan Smith, of Wichita, Kan., of Cargill Meat Solutions, who formerly represented the Texas Beef Council on the USMEF Board of Directors before becoming one of the federation’s officers.. California-based trading company Global Food Exchange Corporation is seeking several U.S. pork cuts and variety meat items for export to China, including bungs, rectums, neckbones, front and hind feet, hocks, stomachs, tongues and lions. The company is also interested in six-piece carcasses for China. USMEF PARTICIPATES IN PORK VARIETY MEAT SUMMIT : U.S. MEAT USMEF Participates in Pork Variety Meat Summit. The meeting was held June 17-18 in Lincoln, Nebraska. UPDATE ON JAPAN’S PORK IMPORTS; SAFEGUARD TRIGGER UNLIKELY Update on Japan’s Pork Imports; Safeguard Trigger Unlikely. Concerns have recently heightened about triggering Japan’s pork import safeguard during the first quarter (April-June) of Japan’s fiscal year. EVENTS SHOWCASE U.S. BEEF’S LONG-AWAITED RETURN TO CHINA On June 30 in Beijing, the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) participated in a media reception marking the return of U.S. beef to China. U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue and U.S. Ambassador to China Terry Branstad addressed attendees, along with National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) President Craig Uden, a cattle feeder and rancher from Elwood, Nebraska. ‘CHANGING THE MEAT WE EAT’ SEMINAR PROMOTES ALTERNATIVE U Introducing alternative cuts of U.S. beef to the catering and foodservice sectors in Taiwan, USMEF organized a seminar titled, “Changing the Meat We Eat,” at the Hotel Fleur de Hine in Nantou County, funded by the Wyoming Beef Council and the Beef CheckoffProgram.
JUNE RESULTS CONFIRM STRONG FIRST HALF FOR U.S. RED MEAT Other first-half highlights for U.S. pork exports included: Capitalizing on rapid growth in home meal replacement items and other foods that emphasize convenience, as well as duty-free status for most cuts under the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement, pork exports to South Korea climbed 31 percent from a year ago to 94,545 mt, valued at $258.5 million (up 38 percent). Now a surge in domestic sheep production, coupled with these high import levels, has weakened China’s domestic sheep and sheep meat prices.
