Is Ghostface the most productive rapper from New York? Tuesday September 17th 2019, Filed under: Features ,Not Your Average ,Wu-Tang Is ForThe Children
Written by: Robbie
The recently released _Ghostface Killahs_ album marks the twenty-first officially released album (outside of Wu-Tang group LP’s) from Tony Starks aka Ghostface Killah aka Ironman aka Action Bronson’s Dad. I’m including the Theodore Unit LP, the first Raekwon, Wu-Block and the record with Czarface since Stark’s appears on nearly every track, but I’ve omitted remix albums and mix tapes/compilations. This officially makes Ghostface the most productive rapper from New York, based on the criteria of almost all of these coming out on vinyl and on actual labels rather than just selling CD’s out the back of avan.

After realising that I only own one Steady B album (and all of his Pop Art singles), I thought I might revisit his catalogue in order to fill in some gaps in my Philly rap knowledge. _Bring The Beat Back_ Fresh off his run of popular answer records and duets with Shante, the rapper formerly known as MC Boob was full of teenage piss and vinegar, to use an outdated turn of phrase. While ‘Take Your Radio’ sadly isn’t included, the new stuff such as ‘Get Physical’ and ‘Hit Me’ (the opening of which bears a striking resemblance to the Clipse’s ‘Grindin’ ‘ beat) hits the mark alongside old favourites such as ‘Yo Mutha’ and ‘Bring The Beat Back’. ‘Surprise’ is Steady’s contribution to the Philly tradition of amusing story raps, detailing the time he unwittingly got a blowski from a dude (!?) and later made the rookie error of cheating on his girlfriend at home. This album still holds up well if you enjoy loud snares and classic breaks getting cutting up, courtesy of DJGrand Dragon KD.

Video: Kool Moe Dee interviews A Tribe Called Quest Friday September 13th 2019, Filed under: VHS VaultsWritten by: Robbie
PART 1
Here’s a very youthful and exhausted ATCQ talking to rap legend Kool Moe Dee for the _Jive’s Rap Video Hits_ VHS tape. Apparently the fellas has been forced at gunpoint by the label to attend this session, as they all seem pretty spaced-out and disinterested, making for some amazingly awkward viewing! Are they hung-over, stoned or just sleep deprived? Answers on postcard please. Also included later in the tape is KRS and D-Nice hanging out when BDP was all one big, happy family, plus a bunch of videos from other Jive label mates such as Dr. Ice and some Hip-House nonsense.(more…)

Here’s the problem – Barry already owns several pressing’s of _Illmatic_. As a record company marketer – how can we convince Barry to pony up for yet another copy of Nas’ debut? The common answer is one of three options – a 7″ box set, a cassette tape, or some kind of limited edition coloured vinyl that’s only offered as fifteen versons each. While I can understand that offering obsessive collectors the chance to cop a limited-edition purple vinyl pressing for a premium price might be appealing, I strongly believe that there should should always be an option to buy a rap album on regular old black vinyl. Perhaps the most offensive gimmick of recent times is the misguided push to get rap fans to start collecting 7″ rap records. By no stretch of the imagination is there any actual value to buying tiny rap singles, outside of not wanting to carry a large crate of records to your next show. Full disclosure: I once stashed a stack of rap 45’s in my jacket because I wanted to go to the pub before playing a gig. Other than the convenience of not having to carry a crate of records around all night, there is not a single discernible advantage to adapting to tiny rap records. It’s bad enough that you have to flip the record once you get to the end of side a, but if you cop a 45 box set, you can potentially change the record after every song! Elsewhere, the options to waste your hard-earned include copping limited edition tapes, coloured vinyl, tapes or 7″ box sets of entire albums. I mean I can get behind the first wave of this shit, which involved releasing 2LP versions of albums designed for CD’s, but recommending that anybody buy a 7″ box set of _Ready To Die_ iscomplete fuckery.
What do you think is the biggest rip-off for classic rap fans in 2019?15 Comments

If you recall my 2013 interview with Milano,
he mentioned that he was planning on recording a project with the P Brothers titled _Boulevard Author_: > ‘When me and the P Brothers get together it becomes real > visionary. I’ve always had the title and I’ve had songs to go, > but it never quite met until the P Brothers started giving me this > new material. I’m doing an EP with them gentlemen. With _The Gas_ > album, we only came with vintage. With that being said, we just want > to continue in that whole realm of things. They just sent me twelve > joints that are crazy, so I’m about to zone out to those and get> it done.’

_New Musical Express_ was, at one point, my only source of (somewhat) reliable rap news. Sure, most of the time they approached it with a confused British journalistic approach (‘hang about, you can’t call women skeezers AND rap politics…can you?’), but to their credit they let Westwood compile his _Future Rap_ chart every week. Here’s a fairly puzzling review of the second Big Daddy Kane album, accompanied by a picture of the guy who sometimes used to refer to himself as Dark Gable sporting a particularly fetching Cold Chillin’Tour cap.

Which Cold Chillin’ Record Did Newman Grab from The Old Man? Tuesday August 27th 2019, Filed under: Crates ,Not Your Average ,Rap MysteriesWritten by: Robbie
So the other night I was watching a _Seinfeld_ re-run to grab some more essential fashion tips from CRC style icon George Costanza, and lo and behold – the next thing I see is America’s Greatest Postal Delivery Guy aka Newman bagging up a stack of wax at an old fella’s apartment with a Cold Chillin’ twelve inch at the front of the pile! Not sure how I missed this previously, but it got me thinking that it would be great to identify which Juice Crew single got airtime on Jerry and Larry’s money train.(more…)
