Measures 3–4: Am is a relative minor sub for C, and Cmaj7 is a direct sub for C. The series of chords (C, Cmaj7, Am, C) contains a WHAT TYPE OF MICROPHONE SHOULD I USE FOR UKULELE HOME Stereo Flash Recorder. Most flash recorders use two microphones in an XY pattern for stereo recording. The mics tend to be “flat,” that is they are designed to capture an accurate recording without coloring it too much. GEAR GURU: QUALITY TUNERS CAN MAKE ANY UKULELE— OLD OR NEW These are often the most accurate and easy to use tuners, with 14:1 gear ratio or higher. It was fall 2017, a postcard-perfect Sunday afternoon in downtown Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii, where we kama’aina (locals) from Honolulu were enjoying a neighboring island staycation. From the entry-level, factory-made ukuleles produced overseas to the high-end custom instrument fashioned by a skilled luthier, selecting the right wood for the job is where it all begins. The two main criteria in wood selection are, of course, beauty and, perhaps more importantly, tonalquality.

The best selection I’ve found online is at Roy T. Cone’s Ukulele World.Cone stocks nearly 30 different kinds of picks, and even offers a variety pack, which is a terrific choicefor first-timers.
BUILDING A UKULELE: VOICING So, let’s get to it. I start with the top and back with the soundhole cut, rosette inlaid, and sanded on a drum sander to .080–.085 inches thick for the top and .085–.090 inches on the back. This thickness varies according to species of wood, the stiffness of a particular board, and even the pitch the wood makes as it goes through the sander. There are tonal advantages for using a zero-fret, such as making open strings sound more like fretted notes, but it also reduces the fingerpressure needed to
