Is the wood conditioner necessary? To answer our question, yes, a wood conditioner is necessary when applying stain to a soft, porous wood such as pine. HOW TO APPLY TUNG OIL TO WOOD After letting the oil sit for 30 minutes to a 1 hour, rub the wood with a clean rag to remove any excess oil. Let the wood sit for at least 24 hours, or until the oil has absorbed into the wood. Because guess what it may take weeks for the wood to fully dry. My project after the first coat of tung oil. But before that, I took my air compressor with the air blow gun connector and blew out the new tubing to make sure nothing got stuck inside while installing.
