NEW COVID-19 STREAM ENDPOINT AVAILABLE IN TWITTER DEVELOPER LABS Today, we are announcing a new COVID-19 stream endpoint in TwitterDeveloper Labs for
approved developers and researchers to study the comprehensive, public conversation about COVID-19 in real-time. This new streaming endpoint is similar to our sampled stream endpointand
delivers free, full-fidelity data in real-time on the COVID-19 conversation, identified by our Tweet annotation for this topic (using the same definition that powers the Twitterexperience).
The scale of the dataset provided by this endpoint requires prior experience working with Twitter data and having the necessary infrastructure in place to process, store, and analyze the many millions of Tweets being generated every day. Given the expertise and computational resources necessary to handle this data, and recognizing the sensitivity of it, we’ve created a dedicated application to access this endpoint and plan to carefully review access requests to ensure they support the public good. WHAT’S INCLUDED: Realtime, full-fidelity stream of public Tweets related to COVID-19 and Coronavirus as defined in our Tweet annotations, delivered as they are created DOES NOT INCLUDE: Private data or protected Tweets DATA LIMITS: No data volume or throughput limits RATE LIMITS: 200 connection attempts per 15-minute interval STREAM PARTITIONING: 4 partitions CONNECTIONS: 1 connection per partition The endpoint will stream Tweets in the v1.1 public API response format. This is useful to ingest Tweets in a data pipeline already compatible with statuses/filterand search/tweets
endpoints. To ensure this data can be kept in compliance, access to the COVID-19 stream endpoint is accompanied by a new compliance streamendpoint
.
GETTING STARTED
To use the COVID-19 stream endpoint, you need to: * Apply for access using a new dedicated applicationfor this endpoint
* If your use case is approved: * Use or create a Twitter developer app * Activate the “COVID-19 Stream” preview in the Labs dashboard Once your application is approved, and you have followed the steps above, you will be ready to use the new endpoint. To help you get started quickly with this new endpoint, our COVID-19 streaming endpoint documentationincludes
quick start apps in Python and JavaScript (Node.js). These apps allow you to connect to the stream and save the real-time Tweets into a series of CSV files. Guidance on filtering for Tweets for a certain language and geo-filtering can also be found on our documentation page.
SUPPORT FOR PARTITIONING Due to the high volume of data that it provides, the COVID-19 stream endpoint utilized 4 partitions to split the overall volume of data over multiple connections. This is achieved using the requiredpartition parameter
.
This means that you will need to connect to all 4 partitions, each containing about 25% of the total volume, to consume the full stream. LABS’ COMPLIANCE FIREHOSE As a consumer of this streaming data, you have a responsibility to honor the expectations and intent of end users when they delete or modify the content they choose to share on Twitter. To support this, we are providing an accompanying Labs’ compliance firehose endpoint that delivers a real-time stream of compliance events on Twitter. This includes information on when a specific Tweet or User is removed from public view. Thus, when a Tweet or User is no longer available publicly, you must delete their data on your end too. This endpoint also requires a partition parameter and comes with 8 partitions. You will need to connect to all 8 partitions, each containing about 12.5% of the total volume, to consume the full stream. WHAT TWEETS ARE INCLUDED IN THE COVID-19 STREAM ENDPOINT Currently, the Tweets included in this endpoint are those that meet the criteria for the COVID-19 Tweet annotation. A list of search terms that are included in this topic is available on our developerdocumentation.
HOW TO GET SUPPLEMENTARY TWEETS THAT ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THISSTREAMING ENDPOINT
While the COVID-19 stream endpoint was built with parameters that we believe deliver a comprehensive view of public COVID-19 conversation, if your research requires additional Tweets that are not covered by this endpoint (as described in the filtering criteria that powers the COVID-19 Tweet annotation above), you can use our filtered streamendpoint
in Labs or the statuses/filter endpoint.
UNDERSTANDING COVID-19 WITH STANDARD AND PREMIUM ENDPOINTS For those who will not be using the COVID-19 stream endpoint, you can still study and follow this topic through our public API or premium endpoints. Here are a few things to keep in mind: * If you use the filtered stream endpoint, you can search for Tweets that match the COVID-19 Tweet annotation. You can use the context operator as _context:123.1220701888179359745_ in order to get Tweets. * We have a collective responsibility to honor the privacy and actions of people on Twitter. As COVID-19 conversation evolves, some people may delete or make their Tweets private. Learn more about ways to ensure Tweet compliance if you use the standard orpremium APIs.
* Twitter does not validate or endorse 3rd party datasets. Before you decide to use a 3rd party dataset, make sure you know the search terms used, timeframe, sample size, and all relevant information. CONNECT WITH OTHER RESEARCHERS THAT ARE USING THIS ENDPOINT To accelerate learnings through an open exchange of information, researchers can share how they use the COVID-19 stream endpoint and/or how they supplement the COVID-19 Tweet annotation. Visit the academic research category in the forumto share knowledge
or request feedback on study methodologies or approaches to usingTwitter data.
We know developers and researchers are full of inspiring ideas that may help the world learn from and improve our collective understanding of and response to the COVID-19 pandemic. We look forward to seeing what people come to learn or build with this endpoint. If you have specific feedback, the best place to share this is in our Labsfeedback forum
.
