El circuito Carmelita-El Mirador es manejado por los habitantes de Carmelita, una comunidad tradicional asentada en el corazón de la Selva Maya desde principios de 1900, impulsadas por la extracción de la savia de chicozapote, principal actividad económica en aquella

época.

Desde el siglo pasado hasta ahora, los habitantes de Carmelita viven en armonía con el bosque. En el año 1997 el gobierno de Guatemala otorgó a Carmelita la Concesión Forestal Comunitaria, por medio de la cual la comunidad tiene a su cargo la protección, manejo y conservación de un área de 530 km2 en los que se conserva más del 97% del bosque natural.
