TREK AND MOUNTAIN
Registered address: Rangefield Court, Farnham Trading Estate, Farnham, Surrey, GU9 9NP Registered company 07684768 Vat number 115585806 ARC’TERYX GAMMA SL HOODY MEN’S REVIEW The Gamma SL’s hood has a semi-rigid peak and a volume adjustor at the back, and together these enable you to cinch in and shape the hood around your face in wind or rain. The overall construction of the garment is excellent as you would expect (e.g. Arc’teryx use 14-16 stitches per inch compared to an industry average of 8-10), and it’s FIRST LOOK: RAB LADAKH GTX JACKET REVIEW First look: Rab Ladakh GTX Jacket review. Jon Doran tries out an all-round waterproof mountain shell with helmet hood that’ll cope with anything from UK mountain walking through to the Alps and beyond. New for this winter, Rab has a range of four men’s and three women’s waterproof shells made using Gore-Tex fabrics. HILLEBERG ENAN REVIEW The Enan is based on the design of the hugely popular Akto 4-season solo tent, with the interior space it offers being identical, and its overall dimensions virtually the same too. Hilleberg have managed to shave a significant amount of weight from the Akto – over half a kilo – and the main factor in achieving this is in the use of Kerlon KEEN KARRAIG WOMEN’S BOOT REVIEW The Karraigs are Keen’s ‘most technical backpacking boot yet’. While this solid backpacking boot does contain some mesh, the majority of the boot is leather and the Karraigs feel as though they were made to last. Adding to the waterproofness is Keen’s own KEEN.Dry membrane which is both waterproof and breathable. PATAGONIA CAPILENE COOL LIGHTWEIGHT TEE REVIEW The design is slightly more nuanced than just being a tee as well – it has a slight drop-tail apparently and ‘set-in sleeves’ for better mobility – but in all honesty, it just worked. There’s no scratchy neck label either, just a discrete print. Capilene CoolLightweight Tee
KEEN KARRAIG REVIEW
Chunky looks and a European-designed pedigree meet KEEN’s more modish aesthetics and technologies. The result is a comfortable, roomy, all-round mountain walking boot that’ll also take a crampon for occasional snowy celebrations. DEUTER EXOSPHERE 0˚C SLEEPING BAG REVIEW The Deuter Exosphere 0˚ has the basic qualities you’d expect from a synthetic-filled bag, including improved water resistance and drying compared to untreated down, but its trump card is the improved comfort and efficiency from that stretchy construction. It might seem like a bit of a gimmick, but my early impressions are that it does work. THE BIG QUESTION: WHAT’S WITH DOWN-LIKE INSULATION? The 3M Thinsulate Featherless insulation dates back to 2014 when the initial version launched. It was initially rated at 600 fill power and claimed twice the loft of down when wet. The latest version used by Marmot in its Featherless range has a claimed fill power of 700 and has 75% recycled content. We’ve used the top-of-the-range Avant THE BIG QUESTION: SHOULD I BUY A FABRIC OR LEATHER WALKING Well, according to the Gearhead digital balance, the leather TRK is 729g per boot in a size 9, while the fabric version is just 610g – so that’s a saving of approximately 240g per pair. It’s not quite that simple, the boots have slightly different sole units and the ‘Leather’ has a fabric tongue and ankle flex zone, but in roughterms

6 OF THE BEST: ICE AXES DMM SWITCH. £218.50. Scottish-style mixed climbing makes great demands on ice axes. Any part of the tool from the pick, adze, hammer and shaft can and will be hooked, twisted and jammed into iced-up rock to aid upward progress, and in such an environment all but the burliest models will come unstuck. With the Switch, DMM have created atool

The latest model we have on test, the newly-updated BanksGTX
THE BIG QUESTION: WATERPROOF FABRIC NUMBERS The answer is ‘sort of’. Most fabrics from the likes of eVent, Gore-Tex and decent own-brand kit fall into a range of between 20,000mm and 30,000mm and that’s a good start-point for reliable, durable waterproofing. The one top name fabric that falls short of this figure is Polartec’s NeoShell, which scores only 10,000mm inlab tests.
PETZL FLY HARNESS REVIEW Petzl Fly harness review. The newly-released Fly is Petzl’s lightest harness, designed to be light enough for racing uphill on skis whilst maintaining the versatility to also be used on more technical alpine climbing ground. It weighs in at just 130g in a size medium, with padding that can be removed to bring that down to 100g. THE BIG QUESTION: WHICH RUBBER SOLE IS Reviewing inov-8’s new Terraultra G 260, with its Graphene-enhanced rubber sole, got me thinking. If you’re a climber, walker, mountaineer or runner, you’re pretty much dependent on the rubber on the soles of your shoes or boots to keep things sunnyside up or – in the worst case scenario – for stopping you cratering. FIRST LOOK: GREGORY MIWOK 12 PACK First Look: Gregory Miwok 12 pack. New for spring 2019 from ‘the other’ US pack specialist, Gregory, the Miwok 12 is a lightweight, multi-sport all-rounder. The sort of pack that you could use for anything from lightweight hiking through to all-day trail-running witha
FIRST LOOK: AKU TREKKER PRO GTX Filed under: Just arrived and new for spring 2019 is the northern Italian-developed AKU Trekker Pro GTX boot and it should be worth considering if you’re after a fabric-based, three-season all-round hiking and trekking boot. I’ve just been reviewing a selection of 10 three-season boots for the next issue of Trek & Mountain, and one ofthe
