The observations of actor, author, comedian, critic, director, humorist, journalist, m.c., performance artist, playwright, producer, publicist, public speaker ‘TIL THE CLOUDS ROLL BY: HOW NOT TO LEARN ABOUT JEROME Today is the birthday of the great Broadway composer Jerome Kern (1885-1945). Kern contributed songs to over 100 musicals between 1904 and his death. His most well known shows include Show Boat (1927), Roberta (1933), and the Marilyn Miller vehicles Sally (1923) and Sunny (1926). I think of him as a crucial transitional figure between the THE SUCCESS AND SUICIDE OF STEVEN KEATS The Success and Suicide of Steven Keats. Steven Keats (1945-1994) was a ubiquitous presence on screens big and small when I was a kid in the ’70s. My clearest association is the campy 1977 scifi movie The Last Dinosaur with Richard Boone. Nowadays my first thought is of Joan Micklin Silver’s Hester Street (1975), maybe Keats’ best filmrole.
THE KEECH BROTHERS: BARONS OF THE BANJOLELE The Keech Brothers were Alvin (1890-1948) and Kelvin (1895-1977). Born in Honolulu before Hawaii was even a U.S. territory (though the colonial takeover had begun), the boys were adept ukulele players from a young age. In young adulthood they moved to San Francisco, where they sold and repaired ukes, gave ukulele lessons, and published "how THE STATUS OF RKO KEITH’S FLUSHING The RKO Keith opened as a vaudeville house/ movie theatre on Christmas Day, 1928, and its stage was trod by the likes of Jack Benny, Milton Berle, Jimmy Durante, Judy Garland, Bob Hope, Jerry Lewis, the Marx Brothers (who lived nearby for a few years), and Mae West. He was born and raised in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, the largest member of a large family of large people. His parents were both said to be over 6 feet tall, at a time when the average height in Englandwas about 5'5".
ON THE DRUMMER OF THE DAVE CLARK FIVE: DAVE CLARK But the answer is indeed, “Dave Clark.”. A rarity in rock bands, he, though the drummer, was leader. But this story gets increasingly good. Because (as anyone who has listened to his early hits knows), he was no virtuoso (which might make sense to form a band around). He was no Ginger Baker, Mitch Mitchell, or even Keith Moon. WILLIAM KING DRIGGS AND THE KING FAMILY William King Driggs and the King Family. One of the largest and longest-lasting acts in vaudeville began in the 1920s with Utah music and vocal teacher William King Driggs Sr. (1885-1965) who formed a family orchestra with his wife Pearl and kids Karleton (1910-1982), Maxine (1911-2009), Luise (1913-1997), Alyce (1915-1996), Donna(1918-2007
AGNES THATCHER LAKE: CIRCUS BRIDE OF WILD BILL HICKOK Circus artist Agnes Thatcher Lake (nee Mersman, 1826-1907), was born in Alsace, France and immigrated with her family to Cincinnati at age four. When she was 16 she eloped with a circus clown named Bill Lake Thatcher and became skilled in the circus arts, working as a professional tightrope walker, lion tamer and equestrienne for many years. Her husband (known professionally as Bill Lake) MADAME DEVERE: LONGEST-BEARDED LADY Madame Devere is important to our history for having possessed the longest facial hair ever recorded on a bearded lady — 14 inches. While there is some confusion about her birthdate (I’ve seen so many given, let’s just say the 1840s or 50s) and her actual first name (I have seen both Mary and Jane), most accounts agree that she was born and raised in Kentucky, and married to her manager(TRAVALANCHE)

He was billed as The Great Clivette or Merton Clivette (1868-1931, born either Merton Clivettae or Merton Clive Cook). MICHAEL J. FOX TURNS 60; RETIRES FOR HEALTH REASONS That last clause is not an exaggeration. As Alex P. Keaton on Family Ties (1982-89), Fox was a kind of bellwether for the country’s shifting direction. The ingenious and savvy premise of the sitcom was that two baby boomer, ex-hippie parents (Michael Gross and Meredith Baxter) have a brood of kids with a completely different set of values, the old generation gap now reversed: Alex (Fox) is a THE TWO FACES OF LESLIE BANKS Leslie Banks (1890-1952) succeeded in having an interesting stage and screen career despite a setback that might have discouraged hearts less stout: one side of his face had been disfigured and paralyzed in the Battle of the Somme. June 10 is Portugal Day, held annually on the birthday of Luís de Camões, Portugal's National Poet. Having created entire sections on this blog devoted to various major ethnicities and nationalities, and special posts on certain ones (e.g. the Poles and the Hungarians), I thought I would take a moment to give a shout-out to FREDDIE FISHER: THE ORIGINAL SCHNICKLEFRITZ Freddy Fisher (1904-1967) was the leader of one of the most successful of those novelty bands that were so popular during the 1940s and the great age of radio, with an act that mixed swing and hillbilly music, perhaps a soupcon of polka (Fisher played clarinet) and lots and lots of broad, lowbrow comedy. Originally from Iowa Fisher first found success in Minneapolis before becoming nationally DOLLY KAY: HARD-HEARTED HANNAH Dolly Kay (Dora Kirschenbaum, 1900-1981) was a vaudeville and nightclub singer whose greatest fame came through recordings. Kay played the Orpheum circuit throughout the 1920s, and was recording forTHE GREAT CLIVETTE

She was the granddaughter of Mother Bloor (Ella Reeves Bloor, 1862-1951), an early suffragette, and a founding and key member of several left wing American parties, most notably the Communist Party USA. Ware also had an interesting career later in life, to which we will return. At any rate, the Geers had a realmarriage.

MARION MARTIN: OF CHORUSES AND CLASSIC COMEDIANS Much like Toby Wing or Iris Adrian, Marion Martin (Marion Suplee, 1909-1985) came from the ranks of the chorus girls, and always carried an aura of the kickline about her, no matter the distance traveled.. A Philly native, Martin was all of 18 when she made her Broadway debut in Lombardi Ltd (1927) starring Leo Carrillo. Later came George White’s Scandals of 1928, Sweet Adeline (1929-30 THE LIFE, DEATH, AND REBIRTH OF MARIA MONTEZ Fitting is that the natal of Maria Montez (María África Gracia Vidal, 1912-1951) falls during Pride Month, for it is the right time to celebrate this gay icon. But there are others. She was born in the Dominican Republic, and she was to be that country’s greatest contribution to the Hollywood firmament, She ranks with Lupe Velez, Dolores Del Rio, and Carmen Miranda as one of the great FAY ADLER: FASCINATING FIELDSIAN FOOTNOTE Just a few words today about Fay Adler(1907-1986), best known and remembered today for the minor role she played in the life and career of W.C. In fact my time in NYC overlapped with hers by 3 or 4 years. If I had it to do over I'd go and look her up, but of course I didn't knowanything about
THE OTHER PEGGY STEWART A few words today on actress Peggy Stewart (Peggy O'Rourke, 1923-2019). I always take special note when I see her in anything, for the completely random reason (which you'd have no reason to know or care about) that she had the same name as my mother. In the case of the film actress her given THE SUCCESS AND SUICIDE OF STEVEN KEATS The Success and Suicide of Steven Keats. SCHULTZ The day after Holocaust Remembrance Day, we are in the right frame of mind to do a brief tribute to character actor John Banner (Johann Banner, 1910-1973). The central irony about Banner is that, though he’s best known as the bumbling Sgt. Schultz from Hogan’s Heroes (1965-1971), he was actually a Viennese Jew who fled the Nazis with the coming of the Anschluss in 1938.(TRAVALANCHE)
