WALKING THE COLONIAL STREETS OF CENTRO MERIDA View of Calle 57 toward its cross street Calle 60, Merida, Yucatan, Mexico. Walking around Merida is a must for anyone visiting the beautiful “White City”. Downtown the streets are lined with historic buildings, one after another. Some are beautiful in their simplicity, while others were breathtaking in their intricacy. THE AMAZINGLY LIT PARQUE DE LA MADRE, MERIDA Parque de la Madre or Parque de Maternidad (Park of Motherhood or Mother’s) in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico. At night and during the day Parque de la Madre is frequented by many. It offers free Wi-Fi, as do most of Merida’s parks. The park was spotlessly clean and one morning we actually saw a worker sweeping the park with an oldfashioned straw
LAGUNA BACALAR BOAT RIDE The water was warm and calm making it extremely relaxing. We were in paradise!! Originally, I had thought the varying colors of the water were created by the depth of the water below it; the gorgeous jewel blues sat above sandbars and the dark blackish jade colors sat above great depths of water far deeper than the average man’s height. FORT SAN FELIPE (AND MUSEUM) Fort San Felipe (and Museum) Our tour guides drove us to our first stop of the day, Fort San Felipe in Bacalar. We pulled into the roughly distinguishable parking lot, which had beautiful views of thelagoon.
MY BIRTHDAY DINNER AT THE REAL SEAFOOD COMPANY RESTAURANT For appetizers, we ordered the tuna and the calamari, they came shortly after I returned to the table. The tuna was cooked rare to perfection and had a little kick to it; it was quite enjoyable but was an extremely small portion which means we will not be ordering itagain.
THE COLORFUL SAN SEBASTIAN NEIGHBORHOOD OF MERIDA Templo de San Sebastian Nuestra Senora, Our Lady of San Sebastian Temple, built in 1889. On Calle 72 and Calle 75 in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico. Templo de San Sebastian, or “Nuestra Señora de San Sebastian”, built in 1889 has beautiful stain glassed windows. Its façade, simple and plain, needs painting but despite that it is abeautiful church.
THE DELICIOUS OCEANFRONT LA LUNITA RESTAURANT IN AKUMAL Starving we rolled through Tulum; unimpressed with the countless pizza places, Italian restaurants and coffee shops we continued on. We wanted a quick calming break, especially since we had waited so long to eat, before we started dragging our luggage through LOVERS AND SHORT CUTS AT THE PASAJE DE LA REVOLUCIÓN The pasaje doubles as an art gallery and currently displays Jorge YAZPIK’s Obra en roca (Work in Rock). Several modern abstractly shaped sculptures carved from stone mimic natural formations. Dotting the alley; they alternate between bench and piece, bench and piece, the entire length as you walk through. FOOD CART ON CALLE 61 AND CALLE 16, MERIDA On our way out of town we were starving and kept our eyes peeled, as we traveled along Calle 59 for somewhere to eat that was easy to pull up and grab food without venturing too far from the car. RUTA DE LAS IGLESIAS When the Spanish descended upon a region to convert them they left a trail of colonial churches, convents and out of place architecture. Unfortunately due to time constraints we were not able to stop at all the wonderful churches on Ruta de las Iglesias; including Tekom, Tixcacalcupul, Huay Max, Saban, Sacalaca to name a few. MY BIRTHDAY DINNER AT THE REAL SEAFOOD COMPANY RESTAURANTREAL SEAFOOD COREAL SEAFOOD TOLEDO BIRTHDAY SPECIALSREAL SEAFOOD TOLEDO OHIO BIRTHDAYTOLEDO BIRTHDAY DEALS For appetizers, we ordered the tuna and the calamari, they came shortly after I returned to the table. The tuna was cooked rare to perfection and had a little kick to it; it was quite enjoyable but was an extremely small portion which means we will not be ordering itagain.
THE DELICIOUS OCEANFRONT LA LUNITA RESTAURANT IN AKUMAL Starving we rolled through Tulum; unimpressed with the countless pizza places, Italian restaurants and coffee shops we continued on. We wanted a quick calming break, especially since we had waited so long to eat, before we started dragging our luggage through A TRUE CANTINA EXPERIENCE: BAR SAN JUAN, MERIDA We had fought the crowd to see the Hanal Pixan activities and were in desperate need of a drink and a restroom. Bar San Juan’s tall doors had intrigued me the day prior, so in we went. Inside the old building, the 20 foot ceilings had exterior wooden beams picketing it like the rungs of a ladder. THE COLORFUL SAN SEBASTIAN NEIGHBORHOOD OF MERIDA The San Sebastian neighborhood is filled with working class tiny cube houses. A door and a single window are all that graces their small facades because it is all that will fit. FERRY LINES BETWEEN PLAYA DEL CARMEN AND COZUMEL Mexico Waterjets are the blue and white ferries. When we traveled Saturday morning November 8 th they were not letting people on the top deck. There were snacks and drinks for sale but no live entertainment, just a large flat screen TV that played commercials for local things to do and places to shop; Xel Ha, Xcaret, Ceilo, Diamond International, Dolphin Discovery and many more. LOVERS AND SHORT CUTS AT THE PASAJE DE LA REVOLUCIÓN The pasaje doubles as an art gallery and currently displays Jorge YAZPIK’s Obra en roca (Work in Rock). Several modern abstractly shaped sculptures carved from stone mimic natural formations. Dotting the alley; they alternate between bench and piece, bench and piece, the entire length as you walk through. TOUR – TRAVELING MARTINEZES Finally, after much discussion, we boarded the only boat available along with our Explorean guides and the boat’s captain. All twentyplus people
THE SPLENDID GOLDEN ALTAR OF TEMPLO DE LA CANDELARIA Templo de la Candelaria was built in 1706. Its terra cotta colored facade opens to an awe inspiring golden altar. I do not know who they were trying to impress but 300 years later it is still absolutely stunning and effective because they completely impressed me. BEACH NORTHEAST OF MELIA COZUMEL In between, kayaks of yellow, orange and blue lined perfectly up in front of a small palapa that houses the water activities solicitor. If you want to kayak, Jet Ski, snorkel, etc this is where you can go at the Melia Cozumel to purchase those things. A MAD DASH THROUGH PLAYA DEL CARMEN TO THE FERRY As we continued, you could hear the call of the flute, announcing the tropadores were about to begin their performance. I quickly ran over to take a peek; a half dozen or so acrobats hung from their ankles while spinning together around a 30 foot or so tall pole. A GREAT PLACE TO WANDER THROUGH MERIDA’S CONTEMPORARY Olimpo Cultural Center’s central open air courtyard combines with all the arches within to show the true grandeur of this amazing building. On the day we arrived, rope had been strung around the columns, creating a fence prohibiting access to the center due to the slippery wet floor caused by IGLESIA DE CHICHIMILÁ, NUESTRA SEÑORA DE LA ASUNCIÓN The first city we arrived at was Chichimilá, a small town whose annual celebration was carefully packed away alongside the streets.T hese carts filled with toys, games and candy caused an issue for parking near the church. We began to hunt for an open side street that was not barricaded for the festivities and would allow us to cross the main street to gain access through the rear of the church. HOTEL LAGUNA BACALAR Once everyone was done in the museum we boarded the air-conditioned vans and rode on to our next destination. We drove through the city limits that bordered the highway of Bacalar and just at the edge of town we pulled into the parking lot of the Hotel Laguna Bacalar.
