Formerly red-lined urban neighborhoods often face the highest affordability and displacement risks when major real estate and transportation investments are made, adding insult to decades of injury and generating inevitable pushback from long-time residents worried about cost of living and rent increases in their communities. USING TRANSIT RIDERSHIP DATA FOR BETTER ADVOCACY A quick look at Metro’s bus ridership, however, explains the overall trend. Last year, Metro’s buses lost 5 percent of their riders compared to 2015. In fact, bus ridership has fallen roughly 12 percent since 2010! As this graph shows, bus ridership has been declining as a proportion of total transit ridership in Minneapolis-St. Paul. A FARE FRAMEWORK: HOW TRANSIT Complicated fare structures make transit confusing, and when transit is confusing fewer people ride. In Austin, Texas, Capital Metro launched its Metro Rapid limited-stop service with a fare of $1.75 – a $0.50 premium above a regular bus trip.
