Trail Ambassadors places volunteers at popular trailheads in the Columbia Gorge and around Mt. Hood. Volunteers come from around the region to give back to the trails they love by engaging with visitors around safety, ethical use of public lands, and Leave No Trace practices, as well as sharing opportunities for visitors to engage with local communities. GABIONS: BUILDING BLOCKS OF STEEP TRAILS A gabion is a rectangular metal mesh cage filled with rocks, forming a giant brick, to support the trail surface on steep hillsides. It is often used in place of rock retaining walls or log cribbing due to its ease of construction and longevity. It is an especially handy structure on trails in the Columbia River Gorge, where loose rocks and HIKE OF THE MONTH: SUTTON CREEK Currently, efforts are underway all along the Pacific Coast to clear dune areas of beachgrass and restore aeolian movement at sites away from human settlement. Hood and Columbia River Gorge Regional Tourism Alliance, the U.S. Forest Service, and Oregon State Parks are kicking off another season of the Trail Ambassador Program to equip Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area and Mt.
