As the number of cataract surgeries performed annually continues to rise, the expectations of patients grow and become more challenging. 1 Many patients expect excellent visual results and perfect vision without spectacles all distances – far, intermediary and near. MULTIFOCAL TORIC INTRAOCULAR LENSES With increasing patient expectations and cataract surgery being regarded as a refractive procedure, multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) are one of the most effective ways of achieving a good visual acuity at distance, intermediate and near. It is well documented that MULTIFOCAL INTRAOCULAR LENSES—PATIENT SELECTION AND Patient satisfaction with uncorrected vision following a refractive intraocular lens (IOL) reflects success in four separate areas. There must be: uncomplicated surgery; avoidance or reduction of astigmatism; selection of the optimal IOL power; and reasonable expectations on the part of the patient. PERI-OPERATIVE MANAGEMENT OF ANTITHROMBOTIC THERAPY IN Vitreoretinal surgeons often have to balance the risks of sight-threatening peri-operative haemorrhage with continuing antithrombotic therapy against the systemic complications of stopping it. A recent survey showed marked variability in practice, reflecting individual surgeon preferences and the controversies surrounding thematter.

A REVIEW OF BINOCULAR TREATMENT FOR AMBLYOPIA The term amblyopia, derived from the Greek words α’µβλυ’ς (weak) and ω˛″ψ (eye), is defined as a unilateral (or, less commonly, bilateral) reduction of visual acuity as a result of inadequate visual experience during early life, which leads to a disruption of the normal visual neurodevelopment process.1 It is associated with anisometropia, ametropia, stimulus deprivation CURRENT AND EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES IN CATARACT SURGERY The ophthalmic community has recently celebrated 50 years of phacoemulsification innovation, and the technology continues to evolve. Recent advances in phacoemulsification techniques and technology have improved surgical outcomes and reduced complications pre and post cataract surgery. However, opinions vary as to which techniques offer the best outcome. ACHIEVING BEST VISUAL OUTCOMES WITH A MONOFOCAL Following my appointment at the Wolfe Eye Clinic in 1980 I quickly learned phacoemulsification from my partners John Graether and Russ Watt in Marshalltown and from Dick Kratz, Tom Mazacco, Mike Colvard, and Bob Sinskey in Los Angeles. Even in those relatively early days, phacoemulsification with the Cavitron Kelman 8000 was an excellent operation; the first real small ROSACEA-ASSOCIATED MEIBOMIAN GLAND DYSFUNCTION Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) has recently been defined as a chronic, diffuse abnormality of the meibomian glands, commonly characterised by terminal duct obstruction and/or qualitative/ quantitative changes in the glandular secretion, which may result in alteration of the tear film, clinical apparent inflammation, ocular surface disease and symptoms of eye irritation.1 TheTOUCHOPHTHALMOLOGY
