I've mentioned before that the Japanese are LEARN JAPANESE: A RIDICULOUSLY DETAILED GUIDE For now though, your goal is to develop a habit of collecting, processing, and studying vocabulary that is unfamiliar to you. This should become second nature. 1. Collecting Vocabulary. Most likely, you will find most of the vocabulary that you want to learn in your Japanese textbook (we'll cover that really soon!). JAPANESE い-ADJECTIVE With every other ending besides 〜い, 良 is always read as よ in standard Japanese. 良い = いい or よい. 良かった = only よかった. 良くない = only よくない. So, the stem form of いい is よ. JAPANESE VERB PASSIVE られる FORM Let's try conjugating the verb 読む (to read) into its passive form: 読 む + ま + れる = 読 まれる. This pattern holds for most godan verbs, but watch out for verbs ending in 〜う, such as 買う (to buy). Logic dictates that the passive form of 買 う would be 買 あれる, but logic JAPANESE VERB PAST CONTINUOUS FORM ていた The ていた ending on verbs puts them into the past continuous form, which places focus on the duration of a past action. The form can take the shape of 〜 て いた or 〜 で いた, as in 食べ て いた (was eating), 飲ん で いた (was drinking), and 来 て いた (was coming).
