MY 10 DELIGHTFUL DISCOVERIES OF THE CULTURE OF MEGHALAYA 1) Matrilinear culture of Meghalaya. It was quite nice to see so much respect for women in Meghalaya. Women are at the forefront of every possible aspect of life. Be it business or home. One major reason for this is the matriarchal culture of Meghalaya. Here the natural heir 10 MARVELLOUS THINGS TO DO IN MAHABALIPURAM 60 odd kilometers from Chennai, along the East Coast Road, lies this little town called as Mahabalipuram or Mamallapuram.This town is a popular weekend getaway for the people in Chennai and a great stop-over for people traveling to or coming from Pondicherry. I have been here at least twice and each time, have found something unique and amazing about this town. A DOSE OF CHETTINAD CULTURE & ARCHITECTURE THROUGH THE The 9 Chettinad Clan Temples. The Nagarthar temples or the Chettinad Clan Temples can be found within 25 km from Karaikudi. These Karaikudi temples are the foundation of the Chettinad area. It is around them that the original 96 villages were formed. They have a deep bearing on the Chettinad culture. RUMBLINGS OF THE RELICS AT THE HASTA SHILPA HERITAGE For an unguided tour of Hasta Shilpa heritage village, you will have to pay INR 200 per adult and INR 150 for kids between 10 years to 14 years. Cameras are charged extra at INR 500. The guided tours cost INR 500 per adult and INR 300 for children between the age of 10 and 14. There is no prior booking required. THE ANCIENT UNIVERSITY OF ARCHITECTURE The Group of Monuments at Pattadakal – the land of Red Soil. The development started in the 8th century by the Chalukyas continued even after the Rashtrakuta dynasty took over. However, once the plundering began with by the Muslim invaders of Adil Shahi dynasty, Pattadakal began to fall into ruins.Even though the Vijayanagara kingdom took over, there was little done here. INSIDE KANADUKATHAN PALACE The famous Kanadukathan Palace in Chettinad. There is no missing the Kanadukathan palace in Karaikudi – at least from the outside. It is the landmark of this small village. Quite like the other Chettinad homes, the owners have long moved away. However, unlike its neighbors, it is still in good shape.THANJAVUR PALACE
The palace in Tanjore is one of the few Maratha palaces in South India. It is home to one of the oldest libraries in Asia. Besides this, the Thanjavur Palace Museum is a host to several ancient treasures while the Durbar Hall is home to vibrant sculpted wonders. TIPS TO FOLLOW WHEN VISITING A HINDU TEMPLE Temple at Vellore Fort. At most of these temples, I have noticed a lot of tourists feeling unsure and hesitant about certain norms that they are expected to follow when entering the temples.This is where I though of listing down a few dos and don’ts of visiting the Hindutemples.

BACK TO THE NEOLITHIC AGE WITH EDAKKAL CAVES WAYANAD The ticket prices for Edakkal caves is just INR 20 per Indian adult and INR 50 for foreigners. Cameras are charged extra. For still cameras, you have to pay INR 25 while video cameras are charged INR 100. There is a shuttle service available from the parking area to the base of the stairs. This is INR 70 per person. A DOSE OF CHETTINAD CULTURE & ARCHITECTURE THROUGH THE The Karaikudi temples are a lovely showcase of Chettinad architecture. Centuries ago. the Nagararthar Chettiars used to stay in Poompuhar but had to move out after the town got destroyed – owing to a Tsunami. This is when they moved to the higher ground in the present-dayChettinad area.

WHISPERS OF A GHOST TOWN The Pamban-Dhanushkodi express with its 115 passengers was completely eaten by the waves and the entire railway station and tracks submerged. The winds and the waves left nothing intact and spared no one. Just 4 brave souls – radio operators, who clung onto the Pamban bridge for their dear lives were left behind. From the first time that I visited this temple in the 1990s to now, a lot has changed about this temple. A lot of new perspectives that I discovered, new excavations have revealed stuff and the most significant of them all, hidden underwater temples have come to fore. What seemed like a straightforward temple in the 1990s, over the last three visits, has become a PLACES TO SEE IN JAIPUR OVER 3 DAYS Amer Fort Jaipur – one of the places to see in Jaipur. The Forts of Jaipur are all located a little away from the city center. If you are staying in one of the locations suggested here, then you will need at least 30 -45 minutes to traverse a 12 km distance to these forts.I strongly recommend that you start your day early to reach Amer Fort by8 am.

WHISPERS OF A GHOST TOWN The Pamban-Dhanushkodi express with its 115 passengers was completely eaten by the waves and the entire railway station and tracks submerged. The winds and the waves left nothing intact and spared no one. WALK THROUGH THE CHITRADURGA FORT As I planned the route from Bangalore to Hampi, I noted that one of the best roads to Hampi was through the town of Chitradurga.A small part of my memory ignited and I remembered that the town had a famous fort – one that I had actually not seen. EXPLORING AND STAYING IN WAYANAD Exploring and Staying in Wayanad. Wayanad is all about beautiful green countryside with lovely waterfalls, tea and coffee estates, wildlife, lakes and more. VISITING THE HAUNTED SHANIWAR WADA IN PUNE The Khidki Darwaza or the Window gate is to the East of the palace and now faces, Lal Mahal – The palace that Chhatrapati Shivaji grew up in. The small window on the door is the reason for this name. My guess is that it was used as a gate to receive messages or things. Further to the south east of the palace, facing the famed Dagdusheth Ganapati temple of Pune, is the Ganpati gate. VISITING FAIRYLAND ON UMNGOT RIVER IN DAWKI, MEGHALAYA Welcome to the fairyland in Dawki, Meghalaya. Umngot River, Dawki. Dawki is a small border town along the India- Bangladesh Border in Meghalaya. The town is a hot spot for trade between the two nations but in reality, has a lovely fairyland enclosed within. Close to the cleanest village of Asia – Mawlynnong, I managed a magical visit tothis
