HOW TO GET THE MOST FROM A FIG TREE An expert grower explains why some fig trees just don't grow fruit. Words: Kristina Jensen Have you ever seen fig trees that produce lush green leaves every season but no fruit? Jean Hollis is a good friend and an experienced fig grower. She says the reason why some figs crop and others don’t could be to do with a little pollinator wasp that doesn’t live in NZ. Jean lent me a copy of RECIPE: CHUNKY MONKEY FEIJOA CHUTNEY (THE BEST-EVER FEIJOA The next morning, place the casserole or dish in a pre-heated oven (180°C) and cook for 2-3 hours with the lid on. Stir every half an hour. It will thicken and turn a dark-brown caramel colour. If the chutney is not thick after two hours it needs a further hour. Pour into sterilized jars. HOW TO USE CHICKEN POO (SAFELY) IN THE GARDEN You may love your poultry for their sweet natures, colourful looks, daily egg, and possibly meat, but they reliably produce another useful product too. Words: Sue Clarke & Nadene Hall For every 100g of feed a chicken eats, it produces about 40g of manure. The average layer hen eats 120-160g a day, for a yearly poo production rate of 17.5-24kg.
