Address, Þingvellir, 801 Selfoss, GPS; N 64°16'48.9426" W 21° 5'17.4444". The camping grounds are mowed each week and the toilet facilities are cleaned at least two times a day. Garbage does not have to be sorted before being put into the disposal

Hiking trails. Numerous hiking trails extend all over the National Park. Outside the ancient assembly site most of the hiking paths are associated with the abandoned farms of Hrauntún, Skógarkot and Vatnskot, remains of which can still be seen. A map of the area can be obtained here. Horse riding is permitted along the old bridle paths of ANGLING - THINGVELLIR NATIONAL PARK The angling season is from 1.May to 15.September. Further information can be found at the Service Centre, through e-mail thingvellir@thingvellir.is or phone +354 482 2660. Note that all fishing equipment that is brought into Iceland must be disinfected.

Geologic history. During the last glacial period, a layer of ice, more than a 1000 metres thick, covered the land. Despite the cold, there was widespread volcanic activity under the glacier. This activity formed tuffs. Some of these volcanic eruptions managed to melt through the glacial shield and ended in lava flows. PARKING - ASSEMBLY SITE - THINGVELLIR NATIONAL PARK The parking lots around the assembly site are identified by a number and a color as well as the nearest site name. Here is a map with the main trails and parking lots. You can take care of parking payment online at Checkit.is.. From 16.05.2016 Thingvellir national park is charging parking fees on designated parking areas around the assembly

The exhibition "Heart of Iceland" combines with interactive method both history and nature of Thingvellir national park. The Visitor centre is located near the park´s main viewpoint at Hakid, where a footpath leads down into the great Almannagjá fault. Information about the national park is provided at the Visitor centre and there is a small cafeteria and a souvenir shop.

NATIONAL CELEBRATIONS National celebrations. In 1874, a national festival was held at Þingvellir to celebrate 1000 years of the settlement in Iceland. On this occasion, King Kristian IX presented Icelanders with their first constitution, according to which the Alþing was granted limited legislative and financial powers. Many Icelanders went to ROAD 36 - THINGVELLIR NATIONAL PARK 16. September 2019 Road 36 Re-opened. Part of road 36 running through the national park has gone through makeover last two years and is now ready, a bit wider but a lot safer.

THE LAW ROCK

Lögberg -the law rock. The Icelandic Commonwealth period ran from 930 till 1262. At that time, Lögberg, was the hub of the Alþing meeting. The Law Speaker, who proclaimed the laws of the Commonwealth out loud, had a special place there. He memorised the laws and had 3 years to recite all of them, but each summer he had to recite the

CHRISTIANITY

The present church at Þingvellir was consecrated in 1859, and in 1907 the spire was rebuilt and altered. There are three bells in the spire, one of them ancient, another donated by bishop Jón Vídalín when he was ordained in 1698, and a third that was made to "ring in" independence in 1944. LAKE THINGVALLAVATN

The lake is particularly fertile and rich in vegetation, despite the very cold temperatures. A third of the bottom area is covered by vegetation, and there is a large amount of algae. The lake is particularly fertile and rich in vegetation, despite the very cold temperatures. A third of the bottom area is covered by vegetation, and there is a large amount of algae. Low-growing vegetation extends out to a depth of 10 metres while higher vegetation forms a large growing-belt to 10-30 metres deep. A total of 150 types

The present church at Þingvellir was consecrated in 1859, and in 1907 the spire was rebuilt and altered. It is also a possibility to use interactive maps on: CAMPING - THINGVELLIR NATIONAL PARK During winter (01.09-20.05) camping service by our Service centre, at Leirar is kept open. Address, Þingvellir, 801 Selfoss, GPS; N 64°16'48.9426" W 21° 5'17.4444". The camping grounds are mowed each week and the toilet facilities are cleaned at least two times a day. Garbage does not have to be sorted before being put into the disposal

HIKING TRAILS

Hiking trails. Numerous hiking trails extend all over the National Park. Outside the ancient assembly site most of the hiking paths are associated with the abandoned farms of Hrauntún, Skógarkot and Vatnskot, remains of which can still be seen. GEOLOGIC HISTORY

Geologic history. During the last glacial period, a layer of ice, more than a 1000 metres thick, covered the land. Despite the cold, there was widespread volcanic activity under the glacier. This activity formed tuffs. Some of these volcanic eruptions managed to melt through the glacial shield and ended in lava flows. PARKING - ASSEMBLY SITE - THINGVELLIR NATIONAL PARK The parking lots around the assembly site are identified by a number and a color as well as the nearest site name. VISITOR CENTRE

The exhibition "Heart of Iceland" combines with interactive method both history and nature of Thingvellir national park. The Visitor centre is located near the park´s main viewpoint at Hakid, where a footpath leads down into the great Almannagjá fault. Information about the national park is provided at the Visitor centre and there is a small cafeteria and a souvenir shop.
