Hiking trails. Numerous hiking trails extend all over the National Park. Outside the ancient assembly site most of the hiking paths are associated with the abandoned farms of Hrauntún, Skógarkot and Vatnskot, remains of which can still be seen. A map of the area can be obtained here. Horse riding is permitted along the old bridle paths of ANGLING - THINGVELLIR NATIONAL PARK The angling season is from 1.May to 15.September. Further information can be found at the Service Centre, through e-mail thingvellir@thingvellir.is or phone +354 482 2660. Note that all fishing equipment that is brought into Iceland must be disinfected.GEOLOGIC HISTORY
Geologic history. During the last glacial period, a layer of ice, more than a 1000 metres thick, covered the land. Despite the cold, there was widespread volcanic activity under the glacier. This activity formed tuffs. Some of these volcanic eruptions managed to melt through the glacial shield and ended in lava flows. PARKING - ASSEMBLY SITE - THINGVELLIR NATIONAL PARK The parking lots around the assembly site are identified by a number and a color as well as the nearest site name. NATIONAL CELEBRATIONS National celebrations. In 1874, a national festival was held at Þingvellir to celebrate 1000 years of the settlement in Iceland. On this occasion, King Kristian IX presented Icelanders with their first constitution, according to which the Alþing was granted limited legislative and financial powers. The present church at Þingvellir was consecrated in 1859, and in 1907 the spire was rebuilt and altered. There are three bells in the spire, one of them ancient, another donated by bishop Jón Vídalín when he was ordained in 1698, and a third that was made to "ring in" independence in 1944. The lake is particularly fertile and rich in vegetation, despite the very cold temperatures. A third of the bottom area is covered by vegetation, and there is a large amount of algae. NATIONAL CELEBRATIONS National celebrations. In 1874, a national festival was held at Þingvellir to celebrate 1000 years of the settlement in Iceland. On this occasion, King Kristian IX presented Icelanders with their first constitution, according to which the Alþing was granted limited legislative and financial powers.
