Friday Five:
1. DH and my mom surprised me with sixth row tickets to see Amy Grant in concert this week. We so rarely get a sitter (because it’s near impossible for someone to manage our brood). We took NB and had a wonderful Italian dinner and then went to the concert. Amy was fantastic. I’ve been a fan since I was a teen and a lot of what she played was her old stuff. NB was an angel and the three of us had a wonderful time! (Now, if you had any doubts, you know I’m not hip inthe slightest.)
2. DS was chosen to be a drum major for band in the parade this weekend. He was SO proud. Y’all, I almost cried at the homecoming parade. Watching him thrive this year has not gotten old. I feel incredibly emotional about it. At the parade, we happened to end up next to his former fourth grade teacher. The one that walked alongside us through a very difficult in-patient hospital stay. It was so sweet to see her celebrate his success with us. 3. DD’s headache is back which means concussion protocol starts all over. Her doctor cleared her on Tuesday to return to school part-time provided symptoms did not return. She’s been to one class since the accident. I’ve been in contact with the Dean of Students regarding a potential medical withdrawal. We have some feelers out about other options as well, so it will inevitably be super stressful week number three next week sorting it all out. 4. The total loss adjuster offered us $4100 for our Accord. Less than the Kelly Blue Book value, so we didn’t agree to it just yet. We will do a bit of digging on comps in our area, and see if we can bring that up a bit, but I have no idea what we will come up with. 5. DS was diagnosed with croup this week, and we got a notice from daycare saying Baby had been exposed to pink eye.Posted 1 day ago

FRIDAY FIVE
1. We got the call today that the insurance company is going to call our Accord totaled and we will need a new vehicle. That is the first vehicle that DH and I purchased together. We bought it used. It’s a 2007 with 150,000 miles on it, but it has been a reliable car for us and I am going to be sad to see it go. The guy today said he thought the insurance would give us $5k-$6K for it, but that remains to be seen, and that’s not a lot to get DD into a commuter car for school when we still have a loan that we are paying off for the big van, and the Accord had no issues. I am just plain bummed about itall.
2. DD had a follow up with a nurse practitioner yesterday. Her concussion seems pretty severe. We learned today that most of the damage to the car is underneath it due to it catching air and then landing so hard. Given the extent of the damage, I’m even more grateful that DD is not in worse shape, but she has literally slept for the past two days and gotten up only when I’ve woken her to insist that she eat and medicate. She’s hurting for sure. 3. I met H’s class at an apple orchard today. It was fun to spend the day with him (I took NB too). The orchard was the same one where DH and I had our wedding reception so it is always fun to see it. It was cool and cloudy here, but not bad enough that we were miserable. Apple cider donuts made the trip more than worthwhile. 4. NB is cutting his first top tooth. He’s not even cranky about it. This baby is perfect! We are essentially facilitating a goodbye visit between NB and his mom this weekend. Mom is saying that she is going to leave the state which will have implications for the case (of course–and not great ones as it most likely will postpone things, but we’ll see). I am sad to see her go. Truly she is one of the nicest, most in tune parents we have ever worked with, and I genuinely like her. She seems content that NB is in a home where he is well loved. 5. I have stacks and stacks of grading to complete this weekend! I haven’t been able to really work since the accident so I am hunkering down tonight and trying to get a start on some of it.Posted 1 week ago

Not having the best of luck with our vehicles this fall. First the big van, and now our trusty Accord. DD got into an accident on her commute home today. Two cars in front of her, a person stopped to turn left on a 55mph two lane country (and busy) highway. The car directly in front of her wasnt paying attention so he didn’t slow down at all. When he turned his attention back to the road, he realized the car in front of him was stopped. He swerved onto the shoulder of the road to avoid hitting the stopped driver. However, that meant that DD had no idea a driver had stopped to turn because she couldn’t see the stopped car until the guy in front of her swerved. That forced her to respond by swerving as well in order to avoid the stopped vehicle. She struck a mailbox, went airborn according to a witness, and then landed in afarm field.
She hit her head on the steering wheel (the airbag did not deploy), and she has marks on her from the seatbelt. She’s seriously so tiny and therefore has to sit close to the steering wheel just to reach thepedals.
She called me hysterical. She said the car was totaled. Thankfully, I could take the call because I just wrapped up work, and was already heading to my car. She was only about ten minutes away from where I was so I was able to get to the scene quickly. The sheriff arrived a few minutes after me, and called a tow truck. My brother is my insurance agent and walked me through what I needed to do. The car has been towed to the same body shop our big van is still at. We miraculously have full coverage on the vehicle. DD went to the ER. They did a CT. She has a concussion so that complicates school, sports, and work. It is really hard to miss class as a first semester student and successfully make it up. This could have been 100 times worse. We are very thankful that she is okay. We are waiting to hear if the adjuster is going to total the vehicle. We get a rental through our insurance but she’s not old enough to drive a rental so that complicates things when she is supposed to be on campus every morning at 6 or 6:30 and we are 40 minutes away. Small potatoes compared to what could have been. We are all exhausted, and will sort everything out tomorrow.Posted 1 week ago

MIDDLE SCHOOL & 5K
Ms. 6 took a field trip to a big city yesterday. Left the house at 6am and returned after midnight. I got a text from one of the mom chaperones at 8am asking if she could take a medication for motion sickness. She doesn’t get motion sickness, she traveled the same route using the same transportation this summer and had zero issues. I’m 99% sure that she was actually feeling nervous/anxious, but didn’t want to or couldn’t articulate that, so she went straight for a physical ailment so that people would feel bad for her and meet her emotional needs without her actually having to articulate them (yes, I know that’s a run-on sentence). Her class is scheduled to take a clas trip across the country to D.C. in the spring. A lot of parents chaperone, but I cannot due to final exams and I also can’t justify the cost. Seriously, these people in private school must have so. Much. Money. I think it’s $1200/pp which isn’t awful, but when one considers tuition ($4k+), in addition to the $150 field trip she just took plus all of the other expenses, it’s quite a bit of cash dedicated to one person in the household. I’m having a difficult time justifying it. Ms. 6 told us yesterday that she’s not sure she wants to go, and I realized after the field trip that it’s probably not a great idea. No one that is going will be equipped to handle any potential trauma that could occur. Of course, not going creates an “othering” situation that I don’t really want to explain 800x. It’s not ideal either way, but at this point we are in the “not going” category. In other kid news, both E and H asked me to homeschool them last week. They decided we should practice over the weekend. We went on a lake hike, read a lot of books, did a little handwriting practice, and a bit of math. We also threw in a visit to the chiropractor and a trip to Dunkin’ Donuts for good measure. I desperately wish I could pull them both out despite having good teachers and being in a decent school. H is doing very poorly. Spending a lot of time in the principal’s office because of various behaviors. I am not under the impression anyone is shaming him and he likes the principal a great deal so he’s not viewing it as a negative but just some random things that could be avoided. He got in trouble on Friday for walking through a puddle. He can do that at home. He was frustrated and yelled at the teacher that told him not to do it, then stuck his tongue out at her, and told her she was mean. I believe he also “shot” at her with his finger (no guns in our home or violent TV either). Of course, the school is not going to let that type of thing go (nor am I saying they should), but it could have been avoided if he was simply allowed to be a kid and go through the puddle in his totally waterproofsandals.
I really want to send him to the nature/outdoor bass Montessori school, but it’s about a 40 minute drive one way and tuition is $6k. Parenting is hard you guys.Posted 1 week ago

WHAT A WEEK
DS just went to his annual physical with a new provider. Our provider that we’ve had for more than ten years recently moved out of state. When you have as many health needs as our family does, the loss of a solid medical provider is felt in a major way. At any rate, the new doctor found a rather large, hard lump on DS’ neck. She wants an ultrasound of it within the next few days. I got him in tomorrow. She said a CT scan may be warranted depending on how the ultrasound goes. She didn’t offer up possibilities of diagnoses, but Google sure did. I called back and requested that she run blood work too so I’m waiting to hear on that. She seemed a bit stunned to find it and DS has not said anything about it so I was not aware, but the doctor made me feel it so I definitely know it’s there now. Seems like a cyst is the best case scenario…. I am about to take him to the dentist for a chipped tooth repair, and then drive to the big city for an appointment with Ms. 6 with her orthopedic. I’ll be racing back to get her to her volleyball gametonight.
I’m ready for Friday. Who wants to babysit for me all weekend?Posted 2 weeks ago

TW: DEATH
One of my oldest friends had her baby this morning and the baby didn’t make it. We knew this was a possibility as the doctor had told my friend and her husband that based on ultrasounds that something was wrong baby. That does not make the loss easier. I’m not sure what happened in the overnight hours as she was not supposed to give birth until next month. I imagine I will know more in the coming days. I’m waiting to hear of funeral plans to see if I can figure out a way to get to Texas. This loss comes on top of two miscarriages she’s had in years past. One was right before I experienced mine and she walked me through it and then I did what I could to support her through her second. She also has two living children—boys. The baby she delivered is a girl. This loss is just so devistating. This makes the second loss of a child in the same small group of friends. 2.5 years ago, a friend in the same circle gave birth to a full-term baby and something happened during the birth itself that resulted in the baby never taking a breath. Again, gut wrenching loss. In this country, it feels like we take healthy, live births for granted. I never knew anyone in real life who had a miscarriage before I had mine. Then suddenly all of these people came out of the woodwork to tell me about pregnancy losses. I wish we did a better job of talking about these things so women knew that not all pregnancies end with a live, healthy baby. At any rate, even from a distance, today has been hard. Painful. Sad. The feeling of wanting to help but not knowing what to do. I hate that my loved ones need to go through such pain (or anyone for thatmatter).

Here is the recipe that I adapted from https://weelicious.com/.
INGREDIENTS
4 cups gluten-free oats cup shredded unsweetened coconut1/3 cup brown sugar
1 cup mini chocolate chipstsp kosher salt
2/3 cup coconut oil
1 tsp vanilla extractcup honey
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Preheat oven to 325 F. 2. Combine all ingredients together in a bowl (if the coconut oil is a solid, melt it in the microwave first and allow to cool so it doesn’t melt the chocolate). 3. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. 4. Place granola mixture on lined baking sheet and shape into rectangle. Press down. 5. Bake for 20 minutes (cooking time may vary depending on how thick the bars are). When I bake them for 20 minutes, they are easy to cut and on the chewy side. If I bake for longer, they are more crunchy, but also break more easily when cutting. If they break, my kids sprinkle the granola over plain yogurt and are content, so it’s a win for me either way. 6. Allow to cool before cutting. I take the parchment paper out of the pan and place it directly onto a cutting board to cut the bars. Reblogged 2 weeks ago from theworldoffostering59 notes •

EXHAUSTED
Baby came down with strep earlier this week. I had my varicose vein removal procedure yesterday. They did it in the office with local anesthetic that hurt like a mother when they injected it. The doctor made 14-15 small incisions and essentially took the vein out in small pieces. Pulling them out felt worse than the numbing injections. Now I have compression stockings for the next 30 days. I think I’m having some sort of (minor) allergic reaction to the grippy part at the top. My leg is red and irritated from. It could be a million times worse, but I am just so tired. Two of the girls were diagnosed with strep last night. DS was up late worrying about me dying because any time I’m not 100%, he worries. H was up until about 9. Way too late for him. I basically had hoped to work from home and rest a bit today. Instead I ended up doing a lot of running around with DS who had an appointment in addition to the school run around that is the usual schedule. The two strep diagnosed kids were also home as was the baby. I rarely have a crisis at work, but there was a thing I had to manage today that was unexpected and a WebEx meeting, and a lot of emails I needed to respond to. In the middle of all of that, my neighbor called to tell me she has breast cancer. She’s probably late 30s, three kids. She said she may need some help having somewhere for her kid to go after school if she’s gone getting chemo. Done. We will do whatever she needs but oh my goodness, it was a shock to me. I’m racking my brain trying to figure out what I can reasonably do with my crazy life. I offered to do laundry, send pizza, and take care of her kids whenever (two are early teen so don’t need a lot).Posted 3 weeks ago

My kindergartener needed a healthy snack to bring for himself and his classmates today. Morning glory muffins for the win—apples, carrots, raisins, coconut, and walnuts make this the best tasting, healthy muffin around. I made extras and they were a hit this morning as an easy grab and go breakfast option for our busy household. 🍎🥥🥕Posted 3 weeks ago
