BARINA LED GROW LIGHT 6 PACKS – ITEM OF THE DAY The Survival Podcast Posted on January 3, 2020by Modern Survival
January 3,
2020
Facebook Twitter Share Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend. Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is Barina LED Grow Light 6 Packs . I have been recommending the Kingbo GrowLights for a few
years now. I recommended them for starting seeds not growing out plants. They are great for that, thousands of them have been purchased for that purpose, I have not had any complaints. They do have their limits though. Chiefly they need to be VERY close to the plants, if you do that they can even do a decent job growing plants to a decent size. Again though they are limited, as I have always said. I have been looking for a new light to start recommending for the same purpose (seed starting) yet with more power so you can fully grow with them as well. It simply stands to reason that after three years time now tech should have gotten better and we should be able to get something better for about the same price. It looks like we can get something a LOT better for a LOT less which is frankly awesome. I have been trialing these new lights for a few weeks now and I am blown away. The bang for the buck is amazing. I used them to build an indoor seed starting system based on Kratky Style Hydroponics (as seen in the videos below) For that I used 2 six packs of the 2 foot lights. These lights come in two options for length, they are… * Six 2′ Barina LED Lights 24 watts each, 144 watts total for $59.99 (41 cents a watt) * Or Six 4′ Barina LED Lights for 42 watts each, 252 watts total for $99.99 (39 cents a watt) Compare that to the Kingbo’s which are a single 45 watt light for 27.99 or (62 cents a watt), but it gets better. First the Kingbo’s are square, at about 1 foot square it takes 2 to light a 2 foot shelf and 4 to light a four foot shelf. The Barina’s are shaped like a T8 fixture, so you can use two of them to light a shelf of the same length. Meaning the 6 pack of either would fully light three shelves of equivalent length. (At two per shelf, keep in mind I am using three to a shelf in my system.) Next up they Barnia’s daisy chain link so you can have all 6 of them running on one timed outlet with out a bazillion cords to manage. This is the timer I recommendfor that.
While the Kingbo’s are a fine light for what they are I can’t recommend them as a new purchase any longer. Even running three lights to a shelf the way I am, the Barina’s cost 30 dollars per two foot shelf, vs. 56 for the Kingbo lights. The growth I am getting with three to a shelf is amazing. Some of my starts are damn well big enough to just eat at this point. I coupled them with this great little mini greenhouse indoor shelf system and whether you want to do hydro or conventional starting for 30 bucks it is hard to beat the price on it. But any shelf system will do. I have a large 4 foot shelf in my outbuilding and I am thinking about getting a set of 4 foot lights and setting it up as well. I will say if you get the mini green house and run 3 lights to a shelf like I am, you likely won’t want to close it up, it gets pretty warm in there running atotal of 12 lights.
One hack on my system I want to do when the current run of starts is over is to get a big concrete mixing tray like this one here. The shelf in my system fits perfectly into one, that way any leaks or condensation drip is caught and stays off the rug. Here is my view on what these lights represent. For the past 5 years LED lights have been getting better and better, especially high end commercial ones used for things like vertical farming. That market is now globally a multi billion dollar market. While these lights are not as good as those used in commercial operations, I feel like they are just about one tier below them, and likely as good as the best thing you could buy 2-3 years ago, for a fraction of the cost. My seed starting system could be improved or modified to be a food production system, tune in to todays show (episode 2573) and I will discuss some ideas about that in the TspAz segment at the end of theshow.
Anyway if you have Kingbo’s don’t get rid of them, use them for what they are good for, but if you are looking to expand, grow indoors, start seeds, etc. I say give the Barina Lights a chance, they will save a ton of money and my results so far are exceptional. P.S. – That indoor Mini Greenhouse is on a FREAKING HELL OF A DEAL RIGHT NOW FOR 29 bucks . You’d want the 2 foot lights with it, but man you can start a ton of seed with that set up for a total of 80 bucks. If you are doing hydro, you have three shelves and room for a sump tank at the dang bottom to boot. Damn it, now I have to get one of these things too! Don’t forget to get atimer to go with
it! Let me add this thing is LIGHT DUTY, I wouldn’t even use it in direct sun, it will get too hot. I see this as a good item to start seeds with, not much more. Tune in today for more on this. Also while I am using three lights per shelf, when I was using 2 the results were still quite good. Remember you can always find all of our reviews at TSPAZ.COM Here are the two videos showing my set up, check the growth in thesecond one.

THE “BIG PEELER” BY NEW SODA – ITEM OF THE DAY The Survival Podcast Posted on January 2, 2020by Modern Survival
January 2,
2020 1
Facebook Twitter Share Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend. Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is The “Big Peeler” by New Soda . We found this little wonder when Dorothy found a video about making Chicken Enchiladas using zucchini vs. tortillas to keep us on the keto train. On our fist pass we used a standard peeler like this one by Oxo . For a lot of stuff in the Kitchen Oxo is and will always be one of my true go to brands. But when I tried this thing Dorothy came up with I was like, man that is fricken good! So I wanted something to make wider “flat noodles” (flazoodels?) out of zucchini. So I started checking around on Amazon for an over sized peeler, and found this one. I was kind of skeptical, I mean it is plastic and all and they claim it will peel a fricken butternut or a pineapple. In the end though it has good reviews, as in 5 stars with over 600 ratings. It is also only 10 bucks, free shipping on prime and if it sucks, you can just return it anyway. So we ordered one. Okay this thing is the bomb! Check the video below were we are making up some flazoodles for the chicken enchilada casserole. On a side note, one thing that makes it so damn good is this Red Enchilada sauce by Casa Fiesta . Amazon doesn’t sell it, we got it at Krogers, if you can’t get it at a local store, that link is a good source for it. Man that stuff is good and yea, low carb too. Anyway as you guys know I have always been a fan of zoodles and usually make them with a julienne peeler. But now I am excited about what we can come up with flazoodles. I can tell you lasagna is coming soon! I did think of a hack for cooking though we have not tried it yet. One thing I hate about casseroles is they can be too soupy. I figured a simple way to mitigate this. I am going to take a aluminum pan like this one, punch a bunch of 1/8th inch holes in it, crumble up a few small balls of foil, and nest the pan with holes into a second pan to let the excess moisture drain. I will let you guys know how that works when we try it. Anyway this little 10 dollar peeler is as good as the maker claims. It is awesome for just peeling but if you are on any version of the low carb train a lot can be done with it. Zucchini is obvious but you can also do cool stuff with say daikon radish and other stuff as well. Of course it makes very short work of a potato as well and even has a built in eye remover. So check out the “Big Peeler” by New Soda today and enjoy the short video at the bottom as well. Remember you can always find all of our reviews at TSPAZ.COM P.S. – Dorothy shot the VVS (vertical video syndrome) video above and did it vertical due to habit formed by doing all my Instagram videos where they require vertical videos. I hate vertical video, if you are not familiar with VVS see this PSA on it here.

MASONTOPS COMPLETE MASON JAR FERMENTATION KIT – ITEM OF THE DAY The Survival Podcast Posted on December 20, 2019by Modern Survival

20, 2019 7
Facebook Twitter Share Every day I bring you an item on Amazon that I personally use or has been purchased by many members of the audience and I have researched enough to recommend. Today’s TSP Amazon Item of the day is Masontops Complete Mason Jar Fermentation Kit . This is a great way to get into making fermented foods and it makes a great gift as well. I want to point out here while I am reviewing the full kit, you canget…
* The Full Kit
* Just the Pebbles and Packer or * Just the Tops – Referred to as“Pickle Pipes”
You can also get these in regular vs. wide mouth jars but I personally prefer wide mouth for most fermenting. Anyway I am very happy with this product. The pebbles do a great job keeping stuff under the brine, everything cleans up in seconds with just hot water and they just fricken work, and like the FermentEm lids they are waterless so they can’t dry out, they are about as fool proof as it gets. For more info see the video below where I give an over view and show a few of the ferments I have going right now. And consider the Masontops Complete Mason Jar Fermentation Kit or specific components of it for your fermenting needs.
