TO EVERYONE WHO PLAYED APEX LEGENDS And who then argued with me about it. I hope you’re happy you saved EA from a financial decline, only to be called asshats and freeloaders and having microtransactions shoveddown your throat.
“Well I’ll play it to support Respawn so EA doesn’t shutterthem.”
And it’s Respawn shitting down your throat now. Next time, let their game die so EA has to be forced to change. EA doesn’t care if Apex dies now, it got your money or otherwise used your free-to-play presence to attract whales who did spend money, thus ceasing their financial crash after Battlefront’s failure. You bailed EA out and get a shit sandwich for your trouble. Enjoy.* 9 hours ago

They come in, aggressively lay claim to something that wasn’t theirs, transform it into something they want, and then alienate, remove or otherwise ostracize the original community. This is what all the articles about maligning the original hobbyists/enthusiasts are about, effectively trying to enforce the new social norm that the new crowd brings with them. It isn’t gatekeeping, it’s fighting “hobby gentrification”. thespectacularspider-girl:

Anita should have been gated out of the hobby. She exhibited signs, like lacking an understanding of the culture, having an ideological bias and saying things that indicated she was a fake and poser. The “give everyone a chance” idea would let her get into the hobby. And she did. And what did she do? She injected supremely toxic ideology into the industry and created massive schisms in thehobby.
Once she was IN the hobby, you can’t get her to stop, because she’s so ideologically driven that she won’t stop until it fitsher ideology.
Same with Zoe, Brianna Wu, etc. This is what we mean by gatekeeping. These people shouldn’t have been permitted to entrench themselves in the hobby like a tumor. * thespectacularspider-girl* 11 hours ago

It’s making the hobby exclusionary. It involves setting a series of standards. Some people are just assholes and you can’t change that, but that isn’t a result of‘gatekeeping’.
The concept of a “real fan” goes back to when geek/nerd hobbies were (and still are) competitive. It’s why trivia was such a big deal, why having these vast repositories of understanding were important. Nerds have always measured themselves against one another as a source of pride. I experienced it from time to time. Not knowing the answer to obscure comic trivia or not having played a game isn’t the issue. I didn’t do some of those things, but what I did was asserted my own “cred” to show that I belonged, that I was passionate and invested in the hobby and I was accepted. The overwhelming minority of people who are extremely, obsessively exclusionary aren’t gatekeeping per say, they’re being elitist. That’s the real issue. You absolutely can expect people to come into a hobby with expectations upon them, basic understand and the willingness to assimilate, like that you actually play and like video games. The problem is that the people you talk about THINK what they’re doing is right, that by forcing the hobby to their whims they’re making it “better”. To them, assimilation into the culture would be bad and so they stomp on the hobby until it looks like what theywant.
You absolutely have to gatekeep these people because they aren’t compatible with the culture. They aren’t coming into the culture to assimilate, they’re coming in to dominate. You look at it and go “well it’s obvious they should be kept out”, except to them it isn’t obvious. You have to take their perspective into account and realize that yes, you are gatekeeping them. You’re gatekeeping them because they don’t meet the standards of the culture. * theunnamedstranger * Source: thespectacularspider-girl* 11 hours ago
