The Reader at Calderstones. The Reader at Calderstones is a community unlike any other, somewhere people can get together, experience literature and try something new. Drop in at the Mansion House to get a bite to eat at The Reader Café, join a Shared Reading group or explore 5,000 years of storytelling in our dedicated exhibition.THE MANSION HOUSE
The Mansion House sits at the heart of Calderstones Park in South Liverpool. Having been closed to the public since the early 1970s, the Mansion House was beginning to decay when The Reader won a public tender for its lease and began to raise funds for a restoration. The building is now a unique public space with a social purpose that’sopen
OUR PEOPLE - THE READER Starting as People Coordinator in 2014, Nicola now oversees the operations of our Calderstones site, ensuring The Reader is a successful venue for our activities and local communities. The Reader is a charitable social enterprise with a board of trustees who oversee operations, and work in the interests of the charity and ourbeneficiaries.

RECOMMENDED READS: POETRY AND DEMENTIA Continuing on from yesterday's focus on dementia for World Alzheimer's Day, we look at some of the poems which work well in Shared Reading groups. Following yesterday's closer look at how Shared Reading can impact on those living with dementia, we've asked a few of our Reader Leaders who deliver groups in care homes and dementia settings to recommend poems which have proved popular FEATURED POEM: THE CALL BY CHARLOTTE MEW Where we have dozed and dreamed and watched the glow. Or raked the ashes, stopping so. We scarcely saw the sun or rain. Above, or looked much higher. Than this same quiet red or burned-out fire. Tonight we heard a call, A rattle on the window pane, A FEATURED POEM: FIDELITY BY D.H LAWRENCE Fidelity. Man and woman are like the earth, that brings forth flowers. in summer, and love, but underneath is rock. Older than flowers, older than ferns, older than foraminiferae, older than plasm altogether is the soul underneath. And when, throughout all the wild chaos of love. slowly a gem forms, in the ancient, once-more-molten rocks.
