TEACHING ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION TO 1000 Daily Warm Up: I have two different daily warm ups that I do during the addition and subtraction to 1000 unit. First, I have 4 warm up problems that I put on the board each day. Students solve the problems in their notebooks. The fourth problem is always a “challenge” problem, in that it is the skill that I will be teaching that day. FREE CLASSROOM INCENTIVES Switch Seats for a Day. WHY EVERY TEACHER SHOULD DO SCHOLASTIC BOOK ORDERS This depends on the promotion that Scholastic is currently running, but often is $5 for the teacher for every $20 that students spend. That can get you one or two new books, or even a set of 5 books. Plus, you earn points on all orders that can be stacked up and used to purchase even more books or on fun things for you classroom such as THE MOUNTAIN TEACHER This is an elementary teaching blog focused on primary teaching tips, tricks and resources. WRITING POEMS FOR 1ST, 2ND OR 3RD GRADE Before letting students write their own poems, I will model how to write a poem using a template.. First, I show students a blank template, and we relate it back to the model. Then, I show students how I would fill in the template by doing a shared writing activity. We come up with ideas as a class, then read the poem back out loud to be sure we hit all of the correct components. TEACHING ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION WORD PROBLEMS You might be relieved to hear that teaching addition and subtraction within word problems is a BREEZE after having taught Addition and Subtraction to 1000.Students typically get it right away, and as long as they have a solid foundation of adding and subtracting numbers, they usually enjoy this unit. ABOUT ME - THE MOUNTAIN TEACHER My first ever teaching job was teaching first grade outside of Boston, Massachusetts. I loved it, but the East Coast wasn’t for me. I moved to Denver where I taught first grade and absolutely loved it. The following year I looped with my kiddos and began teaching second grade. I have stayed in second ever since, and truly believe it is theMY CLASSROOM

SOLAR SYSTEM AND SPACE READ ALOUDS Get students excited about space with these fun solar system read alouds. These picture based texts are perfect for any elementaryclassroom.
LANDFORM ISLAND
Students will find the landforms, write what they are and sketch a picture on their note-catchers. This is a fun and exciting way to get students up and moving, while they are also learning. Students can work individually or in pairs on this task. Next, challenge students to create their own island. Tell students to try and combine landforms WHY EVERYONE SHOULD BE USING BOOM CARDS It ended up not being so bad. One of my FAVORITE tools to use in the classroom were BOOM learning decks. There are four great reasons I loved to use them. Did you know that they are: Self Grading. BOOM decks IMMEDIATELY provide feedback to students by letting them know IN THE MOMENT if their answers are correct or incorrect. WRITING A MAGAZINE FOR END OF YEAR FUN For us, that meant: Monday – Brainstorm/Pre-write. Tuesday – 1/2 Draft. Wednesday – 1/2 Draft. Thursday – Revise/Edit. Friday – Publish & Grade. This can be condensed into 3-4 days per piece, depending on your timeline. The shorter pieces (how to, advice column and poem) can take just 1-2 days to complete. Working on these pieces LIVING WAX MUSEUM: AN ELEMENTARY BIOGRAPHY PROJECT Wax Museum: Speaking & Listening. We end this project by inviting parents and other classes to come watch us present our reports. This is a fun time where the students get to dress up like their famous person, bring in props and practice speaking in front of an audience.FRIDAY LETTERS
Friday letters are mine and my students FAVORITE part of the week. Whenever students start telling me a story and I can tell we might not have time for it, instead of telling them to tell me later and we don’t get to it, I tell them that I cannot WAIT to hear about it in their Friday letters! WHY EVERY TEACHER SHOULD DO SCHOLASTIC BOOK ORDERS This depends on the promotion that Scholastic is currently running, but often is $5 for the teacher for every $20 that students spend. That can get you one or two new books, or even a set of 5 books. Stuck on how to link together all of your life science topics in a way that is engaging to students and is NOT simply talking at them? We spend about three to four weeks researching, taking notes and doing STEM activities on TEACHING ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION WORD PROBLEMS You might be relieved to hear that teaching addition and subtraction within word problems is a BREEZE after having taught Addition and Subtraction to 1000.Students typically get it right away, and as long as they have a solid foundation of adding and subtracting numbers, they usually enjoy this unit. ANIMAL ADAPTATION WRITING PROJECT This animal adaptation project is an absolute student favorite. Students will laugh while learning about how animals adapt to their environment, and write either informational or persuasive pieces on what human life would be like with these adaptations. The Research: To begin, students need to conduct research on various animaladaptations.

PARTIALLY FLEXIBLE SEATING Flexible seating is the top new teaching trend at the moment! At first, I was super nervous about implementing this. I thought it would be hard to manage and that flexible seating would make my classroom cluttered, disorganized and poorly managed. Add custom text here or remove it* HOME
