THE INDEPENDENT CRITIC There are so many things that could have gone wrong with Disney's McFarland, USA, a film based on the true story of Coach Jim White, one of California's winningest cross-country coaches who arrived in the small Central California town of McFarland with what amounted to a last chance at coaching.. While McFarland, USA isn't quite at the level of a Field of Dreams, it's definitely a notch or two THE INDEPENDENT CRITIC It is difficult, and probably misguided, to vote against the cinematic prowess of Tom Cruise. Despite the fact that a good majority of his headline making in recent years has been for his Scientology beliefs or his occasionally quirky behavior, the simple fact is that Cruise continues time and again to deliver the goods when it really counts. The film is filled with passion and philosophy and spirituality and beauty and truth and action. One viewing is not nearly enough for this film. So, how could I possiblyrate this
THE INDEPENDENT CRITIC With fleshing out of the secondary characters and greater clarity regarding their relationships, Silo could have been an emotionally resonant and thrilling motion picture. Instead, it's a rare Oscilloscope miss with a story that never clicks, performances thatnever quite gel,
THE INDEPENDENT CRITIC It's shamelessly fun with action sequences that are completely over-the-top, chase sequences that are 100% impossible yet remarkable and, well, it's just all so fast and so furious. Based upon the Broadway musical of the same name, "Mamma Mia" is a nostalgic, campy and perky musical filled with nearly two dozen ABBA songs performed by the film's actual cast (none of whom are known for their musical gifts, some justifiably so). THE INDEPENDENT CRITIC It is the journey that makes "Scent of a Woman" such a captivating film. O'Donnell offers a performance here that defies the usual coming-of-age film. Charlie is a more guarded young man, and O'Donnell infuses Charlie with a presence that is attentive but never fully surrendered. Slade, on the other hand, seems to embrace only the scentof a woman.
THE INDEPENDENT CRITIC Along with Page, the real revelation of "Juno" is a surprisingly heartfelt and spot-on performance by Jennifer Garner. Garner's Vanessa, at first, seems almost villainish as an uptight business woman. THE INDEPENDENT CRITIC 101 Mins. I have an answer. There is an essential question underlying writer/director Joshua Lim's The Seminarian, a drama about a closeted gay seminarian struggling to deal with the pain of unrequited love and his own ability to tell his own mother the truth. Along the way, much to her surprise and delight, her own parents also discover a THE INDEPENDENT CRITIC If you enjoy the music of ABBA, and I mean enjoy the music a lot, then "Mamma Mia" is a film you will undoubtedly enjoy. Based upon the Broadway musical of the same name, "Mamma Mia" is a nostalgic, campy and perky musical filled with nearly two dozen ABBA songs performed by the film's actual cast (none of whom are known for their musical gifts, some justifiably so). THE INDEPENDENT CRITIC In the Absence is a riveting, mind-boggling 29-minute documentary from filmmaker Yi Seung-Jun that documents the story of the 2014 singing of the MV Sewol off the coast of South Korea that claimed the lives of over 300 people with the vast majority of the fatalities being children.. The sinking of the MV Sewol was one of the most impactful of recent events in South Korea, not just because of THE INDEPENDENT CRITIC The Independent Critic is An Independent Voice for the Reel World Featuring Movie Reviews, Interviews and Features by Indianapolis-based Film Critic Richard Propes THE INDEPENDENT CRITIC Inspired by the biblical book of Ecclesiastes, the Indiana-made faith-based drama Timbertown is a thought-provoking and emotionally honest motion picture from the father-son filmmaking team of Jacob and Adam Dufour.Working alongside producers T.L. THE INDEPENDENT CRITIC If I had Michael Fassbender's penis, I would most definitely be feeling no shame. But I digress. Already. I did what many would consider to be impossible, including Pulitzer Prize winning film critic Roger Ebert, and found myself watching Shame a second time.It was upon my second viewing of the film, after I'd had a short while to process the experience, that I finally came to terms with the THE INDEPENDENT CRITIC "Juno" is the best of the three films and features, easily, the best performance by an actress in a comedy this year. Ellen Page's "Juno" is equal parts smart, funny, outsider and vulnerable innocent. THE INDEPENDENT CRITIC I was already in a fragile state emotionally when I entered the movie theater to watch the long-awaited Joker.I saw the film later than I usually see films, a fact that came courtesy of my involvement in a week-long project around the issue of childhood violence that had me both emotionally and physically drained. THE INDEPENDENT CRITIC The Independent Critic offers movie reviews, interviews, and festival coverage from award-winning writer and film journalist Richard Propes. THE INDEPENDENT CRITIC Let's be honest. Silo was never going to be a multiplex kind of motion picture.. It could be the most compelling motion picture of the year and there's still only so many people who are going to pack themselves into a movie theater, in person or virtually, to spend just shy of an hour and a half of their time watching what is passionately billed as the first ever film about grain entrapment. THE INDEPENDENT CRITIC In all of this year's controversy over Scorsese's loss again for the Best Directing Oscar, I am reminded of the experiences of "12 Angry Men." It was, in many ways, an afterthought when it was first released in 1957 and earned Oscar nominations in only three categories (though they were a big three of Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay). "12 Angry Men" did not win a single THE INDEPENDENT CRITIC It is difficult, and probably misguided, to vote against the cinematic prowess of Tom Cruise. Despite the fact that a good majority of his headline making in recent years has been for his Scientology beliefs or his occasionally quirky behavior, the simple fact is that Cruise continues time and again to deliver the goods when it really counts. THE INDEPENDENT CRITIC Inspired by the biblical book of Ecclesiastes, the Indiana-made faith-based drama Timbertown is a thought-provoking and emotionally honest motion picture from the father-son filmmaking team of Jacob and Adam Dufour.Working alongside producers T.L. The film is filled with passion and philosophy and spirituality and beauty and truth and action. One viewing is not nearly enough for this film. So, how could I possiblyrate this
THE INDEPENDENT CRITIC Directed by Brian Jun ( Steel City), The Coverup at times feels a bit too "movie of the week," but that feeling may just make it the perfect VOD release where you can sit back on your couch and ponder its extensive and weighty issues that may be more difficult to process in a theatrical setting. Alec Puro's original music works quite nicely THE INDEPENDENT CRITIC It is the journey that makes "Scent of a Woman" such a captivating film. O'Donnell offers a performance here that defies the usual coming-of-age film. Charlie is a more guarded young man, and O'Donnell infuses Charlie with a presence that is attentive but never fully surrendered. Slade, on the other hand, seems to embrace only the scentof a woman.
THE INDEPENDENT CRITIC It's shamelessly fun with action sequences that are completely over-the-top, chase sequences that are 100% impossible yet remarkable and, well, it's just all so fast and so furious. If you saw the first four, then Fast Five is a must-see. If you haven't seen any of the films in the series, but you absolutely crave mindless action flicksthen
THE INDEPENDENT CRITIC It is a magnificent choice even as the young teenage male in question makes very challenging choices. "The War Zone" is, in my opinion, the best film ever created on the subject of sexual abuse/family violence. It is a chillingly painful film to watch, relentless in its truth and vivid in its vision. With painstaking detail, Roth creates a THE INDEPENDENT CRITIC The journey home becomes, at times, your stereotypical road movie, however, it's intertwined with scenes of stark humanity, painful truths and darkly comic tenderness. "TransAmerica" works because it takes the alternative route. Tucker, wisely, doesn't focus the film on Sabrina's journey towards becoming a woman. THE INDEPENDENT CRITIC Devastatingly boring. Devastatingly dramatic. Devastatingly devastating. In short, "Revolutionary Road" is a decent film that falls devastatingly short of anything resembling greatness. Based upon a critically acclaimed 1961 novel by Richard Yates, "Revolutionary Road" is a two-hour journey through the miserable marriage and livesof Frank
THE INDEPENDENT CRITIC 101 Mins. I have an answer. "Choke" is a good film. Heck, in given moments "Choke" is a freakin' awesome film. Sam Rockwell gives yet another brilliant performance that is unlikely to be recognizedanywhere.
THE INDEPENDENT CRITIC Rated PG-13. RUNNING TIME. 152 Mins. DISTRIBUTED BY. Warner Brothers. "The Dark Knight" Review. It would be easy, quite easy, to get swept up in the media masses who are desperately piningfor
THE INDEPENDENT CRITIC But, Shame is all about Brandon and Sissy. D.P. Sean Bobbitt shoots the film simply yet authentically, often lingering on faces, bodies and empty spaces as if drawing a parallel between them all. There have been few films in the past year where the writer, director, cast and cinematographer have seemed to so clearly be on the same page. THE INDEPENDENT CRITIC Disney has been touting its latest full-length animated feature, Tangled, as its 50th animated feature, certainly a benchmark worth noting. While Tangled brings Disney inching ever more closely to their Pixar counterparts, the studio continues to play it far too safe with this latest adventure, essentially yet another fairy tale retread of the typical Disney song-and-dance animated musical THE INDEPENDENT CRITIC There's nothing in the world like a feel-good story underneath a feel-good story and that's the case with Entertainment Squad's Dolphin Island, a Mike Disa (Hoodwinked Too!) directed motion picture created partially to help bring jobs and tourism to The Bahamas after Hurricane Dorian.A portion of the profits from the film goes to the local cast and crew in The Bahamas.
