THE HIPPEST KIDS IN TOWN Let’s get one thing straight, Melancholia is a disaster movie, although that doesn’t mean you’ll find it sharing shelf-space with 2012 and The Day After Tomorrow in HMV - Melancholia is an art-house disaster movie. TABOO EPISODE 1 RECAP: BURIED SECRETS WARNING: THIS RECAP OF THE “SHOVELS AND KEYS” EPISODE OF _TABOO_CONTAINS SPOILERS.
When we first meet James Keziah Delaney (Tom Hardy) he’s knee deep in mud, his face covered in dirt, hurriedly burying something in the ground. It’s an image that perfectly encapsulates the tone of _Taboo_: grubby, dark and full of secrets. As a period drama, it’s a far cry from the lavish parlors and summery cloche hats of _Downton Abbey_. _Taboo_ is Dickensian-fuelled gloomy England littered with sunken-eyed prostitutes, backstreet butchers, and toothless drunks. It’s the kind of show that requires a deep cleanse immediately afterwatching.

THINGS TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN 2017 If you were to describe any period of time as an “arsehole” it would be 2016; essentially a year-long Monday repeatedly kicking us in the nuts and reminding us of our impending death and destruction. It didn’t matter whether you were Ziggy Stardust, an intergalactic princess or a babysitting gorilla - 2016 didn’t give a shit aboutyou or your heroes.

SPOILER ALERT: POP CULTURE’S RELATIONSHIP WITH SPOILERS _WHERE DID SPOILERS COME FROM, AND HOW HAS OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THEM CHANGED OVER THE YEARS? _ I was 11-years-old when I first saw The Undertaker deliver a tombstone piledriver; I’ve been a huge pro-wrestling fan ever since. One of my favourite wrestling events growing up was the Royal Rumble. A match in which 30 competitors enter the ring and attempt to throw each other out until only one remains. Rooting for your favourite to win, whether you’re old enough to know it’s pre-determined or not, is a thrilling spectacle. When I was a kid, the internet was still in the dark days of dial-up (Mum, get off the phone!!). Spoilers weren’t readily available at the click of a button like today. I genuinely had no idea who was going to win Royal Rumble 2000.Keep reading

HULL IS HIP HOP? REVIEWING CHIEDU ORAKA’S NEW MIXTAPE. With grime artist Skepta’s fourth studio album _Konnichiwa_ peaking at number two on the UK Album Charts last month, there are more eyes, and ears, on UK hip hop than ever before. Skepta has managed to capture the attention of fans and critics whose only previous exposure to UK hip hop was probably when Robbie Williams tried to release that rap record in 2006 (do the rude-box?). Now, co-signs from Drake and Kanye West have allowed Skepta to help shine a spotlight on a genre that a decade ago was restricted to the dank depths of Channel U.Keep reading

LARGER THAN LIFE
> Monday April 13 2015 A few years ago, it became well-known that a certain wrestling promoter out of the tri-state area gave an edict to his talent relations department. “No wrestlers under 6’2” The idea being that pro wrestlers had to be “LARGER THAN LIFE SUPERSTARS” Giants of the ring the the audience would gaze up at in wonder. It makes sense when you think about it. Ticket prices are going up. More and more entertainment choices in TV, video-games etc are crowding the marketplace. WWE figured they need to be “bigger” and “larger than life” to crowd the marketplace. And of course, Vince McMahon being a lifelong avid bodybuilder himself, has long believed that huge, muscular bodies on wrestlers is what draws money. But a lot of these muscular guys haven’t drawn money and sometimes have been complete box office flops. We’re about 6 months into Lucha Underground’s (hopefully) inaugural season. And they’re rewriting the term “larger than life.” Now, because I like keeping my teeth in my mouth I would never say that any Luchador is short. But some on the roster are not 6’2”. And guess what? It doesn’t matter. I read A LOT of blogs, articles and tweets about LU. I rarely, if ever, see anyone talk about the size of the wrestlers. When Drago & Aero-Star fly from one side of the Temple to the other or when Son Of Havoc hits a picture perfect shooting star press or Fenix wins Grave Consequences, no one ever says “yeah but he’s only 6 feet tall, lame.” Ivelisse and Sexy Star are not big, hulking amazons but they can kick your face in. There’s a great argument Pentagon Jr. is booked a lot stronger than WWE chosen one Roman Reigns. Larger than life doesn’t mean 6’2” and taller. Larger than life means charisma, uniqueness, fearlessness. Larger than life means making you sweat it out in a heated warehouse during a drought to see something you can’t see anywhere else. Larger than life means making you watch in wonder at something that doesn’t seem possible. Season One is proving that Lucha Underground is absolutely 100% larger thanlife.
My argument is backed up by continually rising ratings, tons of people being turned away for tickets and the deafening cheers of the Templefaithful.
And to think, the idea that some of the Lucha Underground talent wouldn’t get a shot with another company because they’re 5’9” or 5’11” is just crazy. And it only deprives that other company of some phenomenal talent. Episode 22 “Mask vs Mask” kicked off with a super-fun high flying and hard-hitting Trios Title Tournament match: Drago/Aerostar/Fenix against the love triangle where no one actually loves anyone, Angelico/Ivelisse/Son Of Havoc. Believe it or not, the latter team was able to keep their dysfunction in check while Fenix at times had to play peacemaker between Drago and Aerostar, still tied up in their best of 5 series. Ivelisse though saw an opportunity for revenge on her open road ex and actually started to walk out of the match! Make no mistake, Ivelisse never backs down from a fight. This was just her trying to get even after being dumped. But Son Of Havoc fought back like a Mad Dog after a shooting star press and PULLED OFF THE WIN!! So much to Ivelisse’s chagrin, she will be back teaming with Angelico and Son Of Havoc as the tournament progresses. But will she get with the program or try to sabotage them again? If there’s one thing Dario Cueto hates, it’s friendship. He also doesn’t care much for Lucha Libre tradition so he ordered an impromptu Mask vs Mask match between old friends Super Fly and Sexy Star. We’ve seen both win so big battles but take some tough loses. This match was a jump ball with a Luchadors biggest honor on the line. Sexy Star and Super Fly didn’t want to fight this battle but the intensity grew during the match as the idea of being unmasked set in. Super Fly even struck Sexy Star down sometimes but a patented tornado DDT from the Sexy & Strong One put Super Fly down for the three count. Sexy Star could not hide her regret and sympathy for Super Fly who revealed his face to the world. Super Fly did his best to be dignified but you could tell this loss was tearing him up. To lose his mask in this spur of the moment way is one of the hardest fates a Luchador hadto swallow.
(_To those who felt this disrespected Lucha traditions, again, this is a TV show not a wrestling show. That disrespect was part of the story line not the shoot intentions of the creators._) To make matters worse, Pentagon Jr. continued his warpath for his master, attacking the arm of Super Fly. A champion of honor, Sexy Star came to Super Fly’s aid setting up a collision with the obsessed Pentagon Jr. We all know Pentagon Jr. claims to have no fear but over the past several weeks Sexy Star has proved - neither does she. A highly anticipated Lucha Underground World Title Match was given another dimension as it turned into a preview of this week’s Trios Title Tournament. Prince Puma, joined by Johnny Mundo & Hernandez defended his coveted Gold Belt against King Cuerno, who was backed by Cage & Texano. A quick word about that trios match - WOW. But the Trios Title Tournament was next week. This was about the World Title and King Cuerno take every advantage of his opportunity. Say whatever you want about his tactics, Cuerno was more than worthy of Title match. He attacked Puma with focus and precision. While the trios partners got involved at various points, Cuerno was doing his best to win the title. Cuerno attacked Puma’s leg through the match but the Champion was not grounded pulling off the win with his 630. I don’t know who or how someone is going defeat Prince Puma for the Title. But it will have to be the match of their careers to pull itoff.
A lot going in the Underground this week: -Without giving away any spoilers it was HARD-hitting weekend of tapings. A lot of bumps and bruises being nursed this morning by the roster. Especially sending best wishes to Chavo Guerrero and Drago who are hopefully not seriously injured. (Before you ask, LU often puts main event matches or even non-story line matches on as dark matches so if you read those in results on other sites & it conflicts with what you’ve seen, remember that stuff may not ever air.) -Still no Rey Mysterio signing but am hearing two sides are close. Quite frankly, that will probably be the story for a while so be patient LU fans. Alberto El Patron should give you faith a deal can be done, but in this day & age, contracts/agreements can take a while. No bad thing, it’s just business. -Quick follow-up on the $20 million dollar loss story. I had a chance to talk to a producer who literally laughed out loud when I told him that. “Lucha Underground never even HAD $20 million.” I’ve heard this from several sources. I stand by it. Some folks have gone hard after some reporters on twitter & on-line who reported the $20 million dollar loss. I’m still a fan of those guys and read their sites every day. I don’t think any reporter out there is making stuff up. I think some of them are doing bad math based on the still-incorrect theory that LU costs as much as RAW. And some of them have bad sources. You guys read whoever you want and make up your own mind. Just remember who told you Alberto was coming in when everyone elsesaid he wasn’t ;)
-Security is still tight on spoilers & photos. In fact, I got into the biggest trouble I’ve gotten into since day one and no lie, was almost permanently banned. I’m telling you guys, don’t get in trouble over photos or spoilers. It’s not worth it. -I’m still going to be able to post stuff (for now) but notice it’s all spoiler-free. But if my instagram is shut down, you know why. I totally get it and am happy to cooperate because at the end of the day I want to see Lucha Underground succeed. This is something really special happening and I don’t want to endanger that. -Speaking of keeping it special, I heard there was a guy in a section who was telling fans cheering on Prince Puma (and the rowdy bleacher section) to “shut the fuck up.” I don’t know this guy or who it was but I know security was close to booting him as well. People can say whatever they want at shows but it’s worth repeating - this isn’t a Temple of smart marks. While a lot of the “heels” get cheers out of respect or because they’re just plain cool, no fan should be told to shut up for cheering on the good guys. That’s not what Lucha Underground is all about. -In fact, I saw Matt Striker say to one of the bleacher’s loudest fans, “you help make the show.” So yeah, they shouldn’t shut upat all.
-It pays to get to the tapings on time. You get a key parking spot and Matt Striker or Vampiro often be out, talking to fans, getting feedback and telling stories. You may also see T-shirts for wrestlers Pentagon Jr. and King Cuerno on sale from either their people or them. Now, a quick note about these shirts, they’re not official merchandise so they may not be cleared for camera. They’re cleared for real-life so when I go to Ralph’s later to get some groceries, everyone’s gonna know I’m a King Cuerno fan, but for LU T’s to wear inside, check out the official merch stand or website: https://squareup.com/market/luchaunderground -One place where there is perfect harmony is the locker-room. Several talents told me that everyone is working together better than ever. Ideas are welcomed and shared across the ranks. The roster is excited as ever, feeling the company grow and are trying to top each week. This is a good time to be a wrestling fan, you guys. -I believe this last weekend’s taping featured the farthest reaching audience and press. People from the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Russia were in attendance. That is some fast-spreading buzz to get the four corners of the globe to the Temple that quickly. -Jim Ross is a close but not cigar situation despite some headlines “Jim Ross is working with Lucha Underground.” Here’s Jim Ross’s exact quote from his blog: “I had a chance to do some work with Lucha Underground as they prepare for their season finale taping in a little over a week that will air in August but we couldn’t make the date work. I’m a fan of their product, except the intergender stuff which doesn’t suspend my disbelief, and would have enjoyed doing a project with them but it wasn’t in the cards this time around. I wish them the best of luck nonetheless during these apparent, crunch times for their brand. I am still of the belief that their back stage content is the best in he genre.” -Now will good old JR one day show up in Lucha Underground in some capacity? Sure sounds like the door is open. Here’s hoping that JR can make an appearance in the Temple one day. And in the meantime, check out his BBQ sauce. Straight-shootin’ it’s pretty great: http://www.jrsbarbq.com/store -More signs turning up on RAW. Not that anyone encourages this behavior but you know, if you guys see anymore or get any screengrabs, you can email or tweet them to me: -A lot of you have asked about the black tape on some of the wrestlers. I can get more specific answers if you want but basically it’s a medical tape that’s more flexible and less cumbersome than a brace but offers pain relief and increased circulation. -Did you see Vince Russo’s interview with Son Of Havoc: https://youtu.be/RU8uyRqmaT8 -Are you listening to the Kevin Gill Show?
