I FEEL YOU: WHY EMOTIONAL VALIDATION IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN GIVINGADVICE
Posted on April 17, 2020by Steven Handel
April 17, 2020
When someone comes to you talking about their problems or struggles in life, it’s tempting to want to give advice, support, and try to help them in some way. Most people don’t enjoy seeing others hurting orin pain.
However, new research is showing that often the best response to comfort others is simply to _validate their feelings_ without trying to change them or their behavior. MOST OF THE TIME WHEN PEOPLE TALK ABOUT THEIR PROBLEMS, THEY AREN’T LOOKING FOR YOUR ADVICE OR OPINION. INSTEAD, THEY JUST WANT YOU TO BE THERE, LISTEN, NOD YOUR HEAD, AND SAY “DAMN, I _FEEL_ YOU. THAT REALLY SUCKS.” THAT’S THE ONLY RESPONSE THEY REALLY NEED. Don’t try to tell them what they “should” do and don’t tell them that they are “overreacting” (even if you believe they are). That’s bad advice
that often just makes people more upset and angry – it doesn’t make them feel better. When you give _emotional validation_ to others, you are showing them, “I am listening to you. I understand how you feel. And these emotions are completely normal and reasonable.” People want to know that their feelings are normal and make sense. When we feel like we are experiencing something that is “wrong” or “weird,” then we are more likely to dwell on that feeling and try to fix it or change it, rather than _accepting_ it as a natural partof living.

SELF-IMPROVEMENT RITUAL #1: “FLYING BOULDER” Posted on April 2, 2020by Steven Handel
April 2, 2020
I’ll be sharing one self-improvement “ritual” every month for Inner Circle members. These will be fun and easy exercises that use _symbolism_ and your imagination to transform your attitude and mindset. Most of them lake less than 5 minutes to do, so you can easily integrate them into yourmorning routine.
For this month, I’ll be sharing a new exercise I’ve been experimenting with recently that I’ve named “Flying Boulder.” Here’s how to do it… This content is for INNER CIRCLE members only.Join Here

PSYCHOMAGIC: THE HEALING WISDOM OF ALEJANDRO JODOROWSKY Posted on March 12, 2020by Steven Handel
March 12, 2020
“Psychomagic” is the power of using your imagination and creativity to heal yourself. The term was first popularized by Alejandro Jodorowsky, who is most known for being a Chilean-French filmmaker in the 1970s, with his avant-garde films _El Topo_ and _TheHoly Mountain_.
There’s a lot more to Jodorowsky than filmmaking though. He’s worn many different hats over the years including being a poet, artist, novelist, comics writer, musician, philosopher, puppeteer, and mime….to name a few. He oozes creativity and inspiration. Recently, I got the chance to check out his eye-opening book Psychomagic: The Transformative Power of Shamanic Psychotherapy , which has been on my wish list for awhile. It’s a collection of interviews and anecdotes where Jodorowsky describes his experiences with “psychomagic,” including how he developed it and how he applies it to himself and others. ONE OF THE MAIN TENANTS BEHIND “PSYCHOMAGIC,” IS THAT WE MUST TRANSCEND OUR HYPER-RATIONAL, HYPER-CRITICAL, AND HYPER-MATERIALIST MINDSET TOWARD THE WORLD. PSYCHOMAGIC FOCUSES ON THE _HYPER-SUBJECTIVE_… THE WORLD OF ART, SYMBOLS, IMAGES, EMOTIONS, EXPERIENCES, AND DREAMS. I was really excited to read this book because I’ve become more interested in avenues for self-improvement that I call “irrationalchange
,”
and much of Jodorowsky’s philosophy behind “psychomagic” aligns with my own findings and beliefs over the years. In this article, I will draw a few key comparisons between Jodorowsky’s work and some of the mental tools and exercises I’ve explored in my own life. Continue reading → Posted in Psychology| Tagged

THE POWER OF SIMPLE COMMUNICATION: WHY PLAIN LANGUAGE IS BETTER THANCOMPLEX JARGON
Posted on February 24, 2020by Steven Handel
February 24,
2020
_“If you care about being thought credible and intelligent, do not use complex language where simpler language will do.”_DANIEL KAHNEMAN
Simple communication is often better than using complex language, especially if you are trying to reach out to the biggest audiencepossible.
A new study
published in the _Journal of Language and Social Psychology_ discovered that the use of complex jargon can often turn people off from learning topics like science and politics, even when specializedwords are defined.
_“In the study, 650 adults participated online. They read a paragraph about each of three science and technology topics: self-driving cars, surgical robots and 3D bio-printing. About half of them read versions of the paragraphs with no jargon and half read versions with jargon. For example, one of the sentences in the high-jargon version of the surgical robots paragraph read: ‘This system works because of AI integration through motion scaling and tremor reduction.’_
_The no-jargon version of that same sentence read: ‘This system works because of programming that makes the robot’s movements more precise and less shaky.'”_ Unless you already know a lot about AI, the latter sentence is going to be much easier to comprehend than the former sentence. ONE OF THE MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH COMPLEX JARGON IS THAT IT MAKES THE LISTENER OR READER FEEL _ISOLATED_, LIKE THEY “DON’T BELONG” IN THE CONVERSATION. SO THEY WALK AWAY FEELING LESS INTERESTED AND LESS KNOWLEDGEABLE ON THE SUBJECT. Complex language can also sometimes give the impression that someone is trying to “sound smart” or “impress others” to win them over, rather than try to _educate_ and _teach_. This “jargon trap” is common among many academics, scientists, and philosophers who have trouble reaching a public audience. On the other hand, politicians and marketers have understood the power of simplicity for a long time now. And that’s why it’s been shown that many successful politicians typically speak at a 6-8th gradereading level.
Politicians don’t necessarily speak at a low reading level because they are _dumb_, they do it by _design_ to reach out to the largest number of people possible. Simple communication is key for connecting with people. And it’s something that we should all be aware of throughout our daily conversations and arguments.–

3 TINY MENTAL HABITS I PRACTICE EVERY MORNING – IN LESS THAN 5MINUTES
Posted on February 17, 2020by Steven Handel
February 17,
2020
When it comes to self-improvement, it’s not just about changing our physical habits but also our mental habits. In what direction does your mind _naturally_ tend to go? Do you focus more on the “positive” or “negative” in any given situation? Do you pay more attention to your “strengths” or your“weaknesses?”
Happy and successful people tend to share similar beliefs andattitudes
that help fuel their happiness and success. Some may have picked up these beliefs naturally (through their biology or upbringing), while others have had to put conscious work into cultivating them. TO CHANGE YOUR MINDSET AND BELIEFS, IT TAKES PRACTICE AND REPETITION. “MENTAL HABITS” ARE JUST LIKE “PHYSICAL HABITS” IN THE SENSE THAT WE NEED TO ACTIVELY PUT IN WORK IF WE WANT TO CHANGE THEM. On a neurological level, your “mental habits” are the pathways in your brain that neurons tend to fire in. The common saying, “neurons that fire together, wire together” is a great illustration of how “mental habits” form. If you want to create new neural pathways, you need to practice thinking in new directions. Like with any habit change, it is often best to start small. This is why I recommend people start with tiny 5 minute exercises to help shift their mindset and thought patterns. Here are 3 tiny “mental habits” that I practice every morning – and they literally only take a few seconds each. Continue reading → Posted in Psychology| Tagged
