SDSU’S COVID-19 VACCINATION REQUIREMENT STIRS STUDENT On April 23, San Diego State announced that immunization against COVID-19 will be required for students, faculty and staff who plan to access the campus facilities. The vaccination requirement, which is set to be implemented by the 2021 fall semester, brought out various opinions from the students. Student Health Services announced in a university-wide email ONLINE CLASSES CAN’T REPLACE TRADITIONAL LEARNING Online classes can’t replace traditional learning. MOOC stands for “Massive Open Online Course,” which is exactly what the program is. More specifically, they’re online courses created by professors at degree-granting universities that are completely free to take. Of the many different MOOC providers, Coursera is the most popular and is THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE FAILS TO REPRESENT THE WILL OF THE The Electoral College has failed to represent the American public five times throughout United States history. In the elections of 1824, 1876, 1888, 2000 and 2016, a presidential candidate has won the election, despite losing the popular vote. BLACK COMMUNITIES STILL SUFFER FROM POLICE BRUTALITY Black communities still suffer from police brutality. Policing in America has been a controversial subject for decades. The blatant, unequal treatment of people of color has been gaining more and more traction, and many are demanding change. Race, discrepancies in training and biased judges and jurors are just a few reasons whyunarmed black
SEAWORLD STILL PROVES TO BE UNETHICAL SeaWorld still proves to be unethical. Since CNN’s documentary Blackfish was released in 2013, SeaWorld’s stock and park attendance has plummeted. In order to bounce back from the stigma of the mistreatment of marine life, SeaWorld has planned to phase out its killer whale show at its San Diego location by 2017. Tensions between the tuition-paying student body and full-ride scholarship athletes have always been an area of conflict at large public universities. It’s the age-old argument of students being disgruntled that others enjoy the luxuries they pay so much for, butfree of charge.
WHY THERE’S NOTHING WRONG WITH BEING SELFISH Selfishness is a damned concept. The concept of putting yourself before others is taboo and often times looked down upon. We’re constantly being told to put others before ourselves and other people’s interests before our own, but by doing this, we lose ourselves. Let me tell you why: It’s in our nature to be selfish. WHAT YOU WEAR IS NOT A STATEMENT OF CONSENT What you wear is not a statement of consent. Too often when a victim of sexual assault or harrassment comes forward to share their story, they are overwhelmed with questions that scrutinize their actions rather than those of their perpetrator.
