As a child, cinematographer Shana Hagan was often found looking through her mother’s Brownie camera, fascinated by seeing the world through a viewfinder. Deep in the soul of any science-fantasy film worthy of success lies the mysterious realm of special visual effects.In the case of Return of The Jedi, the photographic marvels that bring the fantasy to life were crafted in San Rafael, California, at Industrial Light and Magic, the visual effects branch of Lucasfilm Ltd.. Three visual effects supervisors were in charge: Richard Edlund, ASC IN MEMORIAM: ROLAND “OZZIE” SMITH (1938–2019) Born on March 3, 1938, Roland “Ozzie” Smith, ASC had a career behind the camera that spanned more than three decades and earned him numerous honors, including an ASC Award and Emmy Award. As the son of ASC member Harkness Smith ( Dr. Kildare, The Twilight Zone ), Ozzie began his career in the camera department at MGM. AMERICAN CINEMATOGRAPHER: OLIVER TWIST Oliver Twist has two elements that are very important in Dickens: first is the humor, that kind of irony and sarcasm, and second are those exaggerated descriptions of his, which make the story so enjoyable to read. Richardson: Greenscreen action is one of the most difficult things to light, and this was the first time I had to do so much of it — entire sequences that lasted a reel. The ASC Motion Imaging Technology Council (MITC) has been widely recognized as an industry leader — influencing the advancement of motion imaging technologies in ways that best serve the creative interests of filmmakers while emphasizing the cinematographer’s contribution to the art form. MITC examines and understands emerging UNDERSTANDING HIGH DYNAMIC RANGE (HDR) Also, by way of example, a T-stop range from T-1 to T-64 represents a 12 stop dynamic range. A 13 stop range is 8,000:1; a 14 stop range is 16,000:1; and a 15 stop range is 32,000:1. IN MEMORIAM: ISIDORE MANKOFSKY, ASC (1931-2021) In Memoriam: Isidore Mankofsky, ASC (1931-2021) An award-winning cinematographer and very active member of the ASC, his credits include The Muppet Movie, Somewhere in Time and The Jazz Singer.
