HOT DOCS 2021: WHO WE ARE: A CHRONICLE OF RACISM IN Sarah and Emily Kunstler's documentary is a crash course on American racism. After every major incident of violent racism in America, it’s common to hear elected officials attempt to comfort the nation with statements to the tune of “this is not who we are”. But as directors Emily and Sarah Kunstler illustrate through their aptlytitled
SUNDANCE 2021: BLACK BODIES REVIEW Through its poignant cry for justice, Black Bodies is a worthy companion piece to other similarly themed Sundance features. That it manages to send such a deeply felt message in such a simple, concise format is a testament to Fyffe-Marshall’s talent. FROM RIGHT TO LEFT: RANKING THE POLITICS OF SUPERHEROES The Centrists: Superman, Spiderman, and the Majority of Heroes. Superman is a great iconic hero. He’s above the nitty-gritty of politics, which pushes him to the centre. However, a talented writer can make him politicized in an entertaining way, such as in Red Son, where Superman grew up in Soviet Ukraine rather than American Kansas. WILD MOUNTAIN THYME REVIEW: ONE WILD IRISH RIDE Christopher Walken's Irish accent isn't even the weirdest thing about this movie. From the opening lines of Wild Mountain Thyme, it is clear viewers are in for one absolutely bonkers ride. “Welcome to Ireland. I’m dead!”. That’s a heck of a way to start a romantic drama. Now, imagine those same words spoken by Christopher Walken. LESLIE JONES: TIME MACHINE REVIEW At the start of the special, one of the first things you notice is the big grey brace strapped to Jones’ right knee. It’s the only item that clashes with her sharp look; ripped jeans, Nike high-tops, and a black tee with a pic of a pensive-looking Nipsey Hussle.. Most people wouldn’t tarnish their fly ensemble by putting the ugly grey bandover their jeans.

CAVEAT REVIEW: UNSETTLING IRISH HORROR DEBUT HAS PROMISE As the old adage goes, if an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is. This is the basis for the new Shudder Original Caveat, a low-budget Irish horror that shows promise thanks to the talent involved, but ultimately doesn’t come together as successfully as it could.. MINARI REVIEW: A DEFT, ENGAGING FAMILY DRAMA In a different, better timeline (i.e. not ours), actor Steven Yeun (Burning, The Walking Dead) would be considered not just one of the best performers of his generation, but a movie star headlining a mix of big-budget blockbusters and intimate indie fare.Nominations and awards would, by necessity and demand, follow. All of that might still be in Yeun’s future, but at least for now, Yeun’s JUNGLE CRUISE TRAILER: FINALLY, THE ROCK HAS COME BACK TO Close your eyes and conjure up a summer popcorn flick, and odds are it looks a lot like Jungle Cruise.Disney’s upcoming summer movie stars Emily Blunt and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in a swashbuckling adventure with elements of Raiders of the Lost Ark, Romancing the Stone, and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.. The tale of a teddy bear coming to life is usually a premise for a good Christmas movie, but MacFarlane’s flick was never going to be family friendly. A simplistic description of Booksmart, the feature directorial debut of actress Olivia Wilde, would be “a female Superbad.”To do so, however, would reveal a lack of familiarity with all of the tropes of teen films from Dazed and Confused to Can’t Hardly Wait and simultaneously diminish Booksmart to a simple gender flip take on a decent, but inferior film.NAKED NEWS ARCHIVES
