TECHNOMADIA
Welcome to our Virtual Living Room! We’re Chris Dunphy and Cherie Ve Ard (Technomadia) We hit the road in 2006 and haven’t stopped since. We combine technology and perpetual travel (tech+nomad) to create a sustainable mobile lifestyle. We’ve had many substrates over the years – and currently have a nomadic fleet of RVs and a boat. RV CLUBS – WHICH ARE WORTH JOINING? Here are links to the clubs we talk about in the video above: Support Network Clubs (updated for 2020): Escapees / Xscapers – www.escapees.com / www.xscapers.com ($49.95/yr) (If you join, if you select ‘Technomadia’ from the referral pull down, or use the links above, and we’ll get a referral credit. Thanks!) Staying overnight in our RV in a public campground (state park, county park, Army Corp of Engineer) is quite affordable at $20-35 in many places. But overnights at a dock in the boat can get quite crazy expensive at $1-4 per foot (which means we could be paying $50-250 pernight).
STARLINK & 5G
Starlink will use much more power than a laptop. And certainly much more than most any cellular based mobile internet setup, even if running a booster. That’s a lot of power to supply either by battery, solar or generator. And if you need things online 24/7, that’s 1500-2,400 watt hours of power to collect and store. SHOPPING FOR RV SEATS IN ELKHART, IN November 2019 Update – Cracked & Peeled Flexsteel: We loved these seats for a couple years, they were fantastic in our full time use. In 2017 however we purchased a boat and started splitting our time between our RV and boat – with the RV mostly in storage from thispoint forward.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO STAY IN MARINAS? It ranges from $5-10 per day, or $50-100 per week. On monthly transient stays, there’s usually a flat charge of $80-150 per month or it’s metered. We’ve been on a meter a few times now, and our typical summer running-all-3-ACs all day long rates have been around$60-100/month.
NEARLY 5 YEARS OF FLAT TOWING A MINI COOPER BEHIND OUR When we first started off full timing, we used a Jeep (and then eventually a truck) to pull small travel trailers. When we were settled into a camping spot the house was unhitched, and the tow vehicle became our local transportation. That lasted about four year. For T-Mobile direct, we have their 100GB Mobile Internet plan for routers and hotspots that was released in December 2020. It’s $50/month. T-Mobile has greatly expanded their network longer range band 71 spectrum. SOLAR PLANNING: CONDUCTING AN RV ELECTRICAL CONSUMPTION Measure the roof vent fan at high, medium, and low. Don’t forget to measure how much power it takes to run water for showers and doing dishes – it takes power to run a water pump. And so on. Once you have tracked down every device on circuit ST. JOHNS RIVER CRUISE And now, the final episode on our southbound cruise of the St. Johns River – the final push into Sanford. This is our very first 4K rendered video – MONEY, BANKING, TAXES AND FINANCES FOR THE FULL-TIME Most banking institutions have their own mobile app for iPhone and/or Android. Many banks are rolling them out, giving you safe access to your accounts even while you’re away from your computer. Some allow you to transfer funds, pay bills, check transactions, pay others, find their ATMs or even remotely deposit checks. OUR TOP 10 TRADE-OFFS OF THE BAYLINER 4788 MOTORYACHT A fully equipped 4788 only has 200 gallons of fresh water capacity (ours was trimmed to 150 gallons when the bow thruster was installed by a prior owner), and no stock watermaker to turn raw water into fresh. Pro: We purchased our 4788 precisely for intracoastal, river, coastal and lake cruising. BOAT VS RV – FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF LIVING ABOARD A BOAT We’ve now been living aboard our boat Y-Not for 2 months, and it seems like a good time to share some of our initial thoughts on the lifestyle differences from our RV-life. This is by no means a competition between RV and boat life – we absolutely love RVing, andlook forward to
BIG RV: LITTLE GENERATOR One of the projects we tackled was downsizing from a 7500 watt diesel generator to a 2500 watt propane powered one. We had a lot of questions on why we selected this path, and if 2500W would really be enough to serve our needs. We put off answering all the questions at the time, promising to share our deeper thinking on the topic later.TECHNOMADIA

THE ’10 YEAR RULE’ Since our RV is based on a 55+ year old bus chassis, we’re often asked if we get turned away from RV parks for being too old. There are, unfortunately, some commercial and private RV parks that do have a rule against allowing older rigs. Generally the cut off is 10 years, but sometimes we’ve seen 15. We had a BOAT VS RV – FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF LIVING ABOARD A BOAT We’ve now been living aboard our boat Y-Not for 2 months, and it seems like a good time to share some of our initial thoughts on the lifestyle differences from our RV-life. This is by no means a competition between RV and boat life – we absolutely love RVing, andlook forward to
IS IT WORTHWHILE TO RENOVATE AN OLD RV? WHY NOT JUST BUY The 2016 rendition by some alphabet company that is just sickening. With Fleetwood buying the name recently, we hope for a reprise of the old style, super quality Trek.
BOAT VS RV: WHICH COSTS MORE? Staying overnight in our RV in a public campground (state park, county park, Army Corp of Engineer) is quite affordable at $20-35 in many places. But overnights at a dock in the boat can get quite crazy expensive at $1-4 per foot (which means we could be paying $50-250 pernight).
OUR MOBILE INTERNET SETUP FOR RV & BOAT The cost is $400/year ($33.33/mo). For T-Mobile direct, we have their 100GB Mobile Internet plan for routers and hotspots that was released in December 2020. It’s $50/month. T-Mobile has greatly expanded their network longer range band 71 spectrum.

LITHIUM ION BATTERIES FOR RV MOTORHOME HOUSE SYSTEM First System (2011-2019): Our 1961 Vintage Bus Conversion. In June 2011, we bought our vintage bus conversion without a house battery system already installed. The just emerging lithium ion batteries had already been on our radar, and since we had the opportunity to build our electrical system from scratch - we decided to delve into theworld of LFP.

This 1979 Ocean Trawler was listed at $49,900. When we first researched the Great Loop, our first few online searches turned up several listings for boats that seemed up to the adventure that were priced as low as $10,000 – $30,000. * Skip to primary navigation * Skip to main content* Skip to footer
