BUICK ENGINE IDENTIFICATION, BY THE NUMBERS The engine production code, which is stamped on the front of the block near where the head attaches, does give engine data. The number is in the form AB123. The engine serial number will also be stamped on the block somewhere nearby. It will be the last 8 characters of the VIN and will tell if the engine is the one which came in the car.BUICK ENGINE NUMBER

To continune on the subject, I first started looking into this issue when I noticed that Speed Pro advertizes a 9.5-1 "high compression" piston H392NCP for the 455. I was curious as to why the specifications for the 1970 SF 455 Buick block stated that it had a 10-1 CR, but yet the Performance pistons were only 9.5-1.
