In November of 1971, the Society was recognized by first lady Pat Nixon for excellence in landscape design for the grounds of its headquarters in Ankeny, Iowa. The original landscaping was designed by Dr. John Fitzsimmons, a professor at nearby Iowa State University, who designed layouts for 67 of Iowa’s state parks.
