SUNSHINE SKIES
Welcome to Sunshine Skies, a website about vintage commercial aviation with a focus on the smaller airlines and commercial airports of Florida and Georgia. You'll find over two hundred pages full of historic photos, postcards, timetables, route maps, airport diagrams and stories about the airlines, airports and aircraft of the Sunshineand Peach states.
VINTAGE AIRWAYS
While Vintage Airways wasn't a commuter airline, it was often mistaken for one. Founded by Richard Branson (hence the Virgin-esque paint scheme), Vintage operated 1940s-themed nostalgia air tour flights between Orlando and Key West as well as local sightseeing flights beginning in 1992. Flights were later moved from Orlando International Airport to the less congested Kissimmee airport and CHALK'S INTERNATIONAL AIRLINES Chalk's was one the most legendary commuter airlines in America. Billing itself as "The World's Oldest Airline," Chalk's flew seaplanes in south Florida and the Bahamas for over 8 decades. The airline had many different owners after the death of founder Arthur Chalk in 1977, also operating under the names Chalk's International, Chalk's OceanSHAWNEE AIRLINES
Shawnee introduced this stunning tropical paint scheme on DC-3 N1301 when it became a subsidiary of Florida Airlines in 1975. Martin 404s joined the fleet in 1976 and were used on lucrative routes to the Bahamas. DC-3 N45366, seen at Sarasota in January 1977, sports yet another variation of the hot pink / yellow paint scheme. PROVINCETOWN-BOSTON AIRLINE (PBA) PROVINCETOWN-BOSTON AIRLINE. PBA was probably the most significant commuter airline in Florida history. The airline operated two divisions, one in Cape Cod and one in Florida, with seasonal traffic patterns that complimented each other. The Florida division was known as Naples Airlines from 1960 to 1980, when the name was changed tosimply PBA.
ATLANTIC SOUTHEAST AIRLINES (ASA) ASA began service on June 27, 1979 with a single route between Atlanta and Columbus, GA. The airline quickly became the largest commuter airline in Atlanta and one of the largest regional airlines in the world. ASA absorbed Southeastern Airlines on April 1, 1983 and became a Delta Connection carrier in 1984. Here is a look at the aircraft and AIR FLORIDA COMMUTER Air Miami became the first Air Florida Commuter airline in October 1980. de Havilland Heron N454AM is pictured at Miami. became North American Airlines in December 1980 and continued to operate flights for Air Florida using Herons and CASA 212s. The agreement ended in REMNANTS OF ATLANTA'S 1961 AIRPORT TERMINAL The following photos show how the remains of the old terminal have disappeared in recent years and what is left today. This is the view of the airport from the Virginia Avenue bridge in 1962. A similar view from Google Maps 58 years later. The carrier purchased commuter airline Air Sunshine in 1979, but waited until 1980 to create the Air Florida Commuter system. The airline's image was forever tarnished by the 737 crash into the icy Potomac River in Washington in January 1982. Air Florida fell into financial turmoil and ceased operations on July 3, 1984. Air Florida was an intrastate, and eventually international, carrier based in Miami in the 1970s and early 1980s. The airline, along with its Air Florida Commuter affiliates, dominated the Florida intrastate market for over a decade. PBA DC-3S - WHERE ARE THEY NOW? - SUNSHINE SKIES Provincetown - Boston Airline was the most famous of the later day DC-3 operators and flew 12, mostly pre-war examples of the type.More than three decades after the last PBA DC-3 flight in September 1988, 11 of these aircraft still exist in some form and the fate of one isuncertain.
THE DOBBS HOUSE AND UNCLE REMUS The Dobbs House dining room was decorated in a plantation theme based on the stories from Atlanta writer Joel Chandler Harris' book Uncle Remus, His Songs and His Sayings. The white-columned entrance was decorated with cotton bales, and an African-American employee, Alfonso Smith, entertained guests with stories from the book. ATLANTA OPENS THE WORLD'S LARGEST AIRPORT TERMINAL ATLANTA OPENS THE WORLD'S LARGEST TERMINAL. On September 21, 1980, Atlanta's enormous new passenger terminal, the largest in the world, opened for business. GULL AIR - SUNSHINE SKIES - SUNSHINE SKIES Gull Air operated commuter flights in South Florida during the 1980s as a way to offset the seasonal traffic lulls in its established route network in Massachusetts. The agreement ended in VERO MONMOUTH AIRLINES Vero Monmouth was the short-lived sister company of New Jersey-based Monmouth Airlines. The airline began scheduled flights on January 13, 1973 when they took over Vero Beach routes abandoned by Eastern Air Lines when the major airline transitioned to pure-jet equipment that was too large for the relatively small Vero market. The Vero Monmouth fleet consisted of a single de Havilland DH-114 ATLANTA'S CANDLER FIELD Atlanta Mayor Walter Sims approved the site of abandoned racetrack for development as an airport on Monday March 9, 1925. The first scheduled airline service from Atlanta occurred on the morning of September 15, 1926 when a Florida Airways plane departed at 6AM for Macon, Jacksonville, Tampa, Ft. Myers and Miami. The remains of this once great bird were bought by Kermit Weeks in 2002 and shipped in from Mississippi where the aircraft had been parked since the 1980s. The agreement ended in VERO MONMOUTH AIRLINES Vero Monmouth was the short-lived sister company of New Jersey-based Monmouth Airlines. The airline began scheduled flights on January 13, 1973 when they took over Vero Beach routes abandoned by Eastern Air Lines when the major airline transitioned to pure-jet equipment that was too large for the relatively small Vero market. The Vero Monmouth fleet consisted of a single de Havilland DH-114 ATLANTA'S CANDLER FIELD Atlanta Mayor Walter Sims approved the site of abandoned racetrack for development as an airport on Monday March 9, 1925. The first scheduled airline service from Atlanta occurred on the morning of September 15, 1926 when a Florida Airways plane departed at 6AM for Macon, Jacksonville, Tampa, Ft. Myers and Miami. ATLANTA OPENS THE WORLD'S LARGEST AIRPORT TERMINAL ATLANTA OPENS THE WORLD'S LARGEST TERMINAL. On September 21, 1980, Atlanta's enormous new passenger terminal, the largest in the world, opened for business. Provincetown - Boston Airline was the most famous of the later day DC-3 operators and flew 12, mostly pre-war examples of the type.More than three decades after the last PBA DC-3 flight in September 1988, 11 of these aircraft still exist in some form and the fate of one isuncertain.

NATIONWIDE AIRLINES SOUTHEAST Nationwide Airlines Southeast, Inc commenced operations in August 1967 with a small fleet of Beechcraft Queen Airs and a route system based around Atlanta. When founder David Starr departed in late 1968, he was replaced by F.E. Located on the Gulf of Mexico in southwest Florida, Marco Island saw massive real estate development in the 1960s and 1970s, transforming the once sleepy island into a booming vacation resort. EASTERN METRO EXPRESS Eastern Metro Express was a subsidiary of Houston-based Metro Airlines created specifically to feed Eastern Airlines' hub at Atlanta. Flights began in April 1984, and by 1987 the airline was serving over 20 cities throughout the southeast. The carrier ceased operations when Eastern Airlines shut down inAIR FLORIDA

Gulfstream began operating in 1990 with flights between Miami and Cap Haitien, Haiti, service which was quickly halted due to the unstable political climate in the island country. The following year Gulfstream began flights between Miami, the Bahamas, Orlando and Vero Beach. In 1994 the airline expanded into HISTORY OF AIRLINE SERVICE AT MARCO ISLAND Marco Island is one of many communities across the Sunshine State that once enjoyed but no longer has regularly scheduled airline service. Located on the Gulf of Mexico in southwest Florida, Marco Island saw massive real estate development in the 1960s and 1970s, transforming the once sleepy island into a booming vacation resort. EASTERN METRO EXPRESS Eastern Metro Express was a subsidiary of Houston-based Metro Airlines created specifically to feed Eastern Airlines' hub at Atlanta. Flights began in April 1984, and by 1987 the airline was serving over 20 cities throughout the southeast. The carrier ceased operations when Eastern Airlines shut down inAIR FLORIDA
Air Florida was an intrastate, and eventually international, carrier based in Miami in the 1970s and early 1980s. The airline, along with its Air Florida Commuter affiliates, dominated the Florida intrastate market for over a decade. ATLANTA'S CANDLER FIELD Atlanta Mayor Walter Sims approved the site of abandoned racetrack for development as an airport on Monday March 9, 1925. The first scheduled airline service from Atlanta occurred on the morning of September 15, 1926 when a Florida Airways plane departed at 6AM for Macon, Jacksonville, Tampa, Ft. Myers and Miami. ATLANTA OPENS THE WORLD'S LARGEST AIRPORT TERMINAL ATLANTA OPENS THE WORLD'S LARGEST TERMINAL. On September 21, 1980, Atlanta's enormous new passenger terminal, the largest in the world, opened for business. Dubbed "Midfield" because of its central location between the runways, the complex is still in operation today although it has been expanded through the years.SUNSHINE SKIES

Provincetown - Boston Airline was the most famous of the later day DC-3 operators and flew 12, mostly pre-war examples of the type.More than three decades after the last PBA DC-3 flight in September 1988, 11 of these aircraft still exist in some form and the fate of one isuncertain.
PROVINCETOWN-BOSTON AIRLINE (PBA) PROVINCETOWN-BOSTON AIRLINE. PBA was probably the most significant commuter airline in Florida history. The airline operated two divisions, one in Cape Cod and one in Florida, with seasonal traffic patterns that complimented each other. The Florida division was known as Naples Airlines from 1960 to 1980, when the name was changed tosimply PBA.

THE CRASH OF SHAWNEE AIRLINES FLIGHT 103 In 2009 I received a series of emails from Randy Jackson of Orlando concerning the crash of a Shawnee Airlines DC-3 in Mr. Jackson initially asked if I had any information on the crash, and I had to admit that I had never found a single mention of it in my years of research. PRO AIR. One of the last U.S. airlines to fly Martin 404s and DC-3s in regular scheduled passenger service was Miami-based Pro Air Services, which operated from 1981 to 1988. Myers with continuing service to Sarasota and Tampa. The airline discontinued all Florida flights on December 9,1971.

The carrier purchased commuter airline Air Sunshine in 1979, but waited until 1980 to create the Air Florida Commuter system. The airline's image was forever tarnished by the 737 crash into the icy Potomac River in Washington in January 1982. Air Florida fell into financial turmoil and ceased operations on July 3, 1984.
