JENNIFER LAWRENCE ARRIVES IN 'WINTER'S BONE' FREE ON Debra Granik’s Winter’s Bone (2010), set in the crime and poverty of the Ozark Mountains, is a coming-of-age survival story in an outlaw culture where meth labs have replaced moonshine stills and the code of silence is enforced with pitiless finality.. Jennifer Lawrence was revelation as the 17-year-old Ree, who has grown up fast to take care of her incapacitated mother and two young siblings. 'WONDER WOMAN' ON HBO MAX Wonder Woman (2017) is, if you’ll pardon such an obvious comment, a wonder of a superhero movie, a film that doesn’t transcend the genre but most certainly sets a high bar, especially next to the ponderous, humorless films of the new big screen universe of 'UNDERGROUND: SEASON 1' ON HULU Underground: Season 1 (2016), produced for the cable channel WGN, is a historical drama about the culture of slavery in America and the creation of the Underground Railroad which helped escaped slaves get to freedom. It is also a sometimes difficult show to watch because it reminds us that the sanctioned medieval brutality presented in such historical (and historical fantasy) shows as Vikings 'GRACELAND: SEASONS 1 AND 2' ON NETFLIX Graceland: Seasons 1 and 2 – The USA original series about undercover agents who work out of a beachside manor in Los Angeles, takes a grittier approach than the usual USA network original series, which are generally defined by personable characters with lots of personality, light drama with plenty of humor and banter, and bright, colorful visual design on a budget.FILM NOIR ARCHIVES
