STAY & ROAM
Twenty years from now, you'll be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbour. HOMEMADE WOOD BUTTER A few years ago we bought an olive wood chopping board. It’s an irregular shape with lots of nice wood grain, bit of a keeper. I’ve neglected it lately and it was looking really parched so I made some wood butter to bring it back to life. GROWING AN AVOCADO STONE Don’t let my story above put you off, growing an avocado stone is simpler than you think. Place three toothpicks into the stone (pointy end up) and soak the bottom half in water. EXPERIMENTING WITH NATURAL DYES Natural dyes are something I came across on Pinterest but I put the idea of the back of my mind until I could think of a proper project. Recently I read a natural dye post on the Modern Botanics blog (beautiful, do have a look) about natural dyes and it sparked my curiosity again; I decided my project could be a colour study for my illustrations rather than a finished object. SURVIVING SWEDISH WINTER The darkest days only have around five light hours, including the transition between day and night. The photo below was taken at 1:30pm — 7pm feels like an acceptable bed time when this is the lightest point in the day. 1:30pm in Winter. Julgransflygning. On the other side of the coin, everything around you is lit up. CATBELLS TO MAIDEN MOOR View from Room 1. Catbells was the first walk on our list. The fell is 451 metres tall and overlooks the lake (Derwent Water). You can walk to the start of the trail from Keswick but we fancied going out on the lake, so we took the boat to Hawse End. HOW TO IDENTIFY ELDERFLOWER Fresh elderflowers. Avoid picking elderflower with a slightly brown appearance because it won’t be as fragrantor tasty. Elderflower leaves. The leaves have a serrated edge and are commonly found inclusters of 5.
HOMEMADE BIRD FAT CAKE Over the weekend I made some treats for the birds. We’d almost run out of fat cake and it’s quite expensive to buy if you don’t have space to store in bulk, so I thought I’d FUNGUS GNATS IN THE GARDEN The gnats don’t like dry soil so I’ve been using a hand cultivator to rake over the top couple of inches in order to dry it out. Its worked really well and MOVING FROM THE UK TO SWEDEN Henningsvær, Norway. Moving abroad was always a someday dream. Maybe when we’re old, maybe when this happens, maybe when that happens. But twists and turns over the last year and a half helped us realise we can’t bank on growing old and saving that time for adventures.STAY & ROAM

Daffodils have actually started to bloom in our garden – I think I may cut some of them before the wind blows them away. I’m a big kitchen windowsill fan but mine is so so so overcrowded with herb plants, pots, mini mugs with my twins baby feet imprints and even a CROCHET DIAMOND BABY BLANKET Crochet diamond baby blanket. Crocheting this pattern was really enjoyable. Easy to follow and once I’d crocheted a couple of pattern repeats I didn’t need to look at the instructions anymore. I’M A HAPPINESS ENGINEER AT AUTOMATTIC! As some of you will know, I’m now a Happiness Engineer at Automattic! Automattic is the company behind WordPress.com, Jetpack, Simplenote and lots more. And what is a Happiness Engineer? You might have visions of me painting rainbows while riding a unicorn. GROWING AN AVOCADO STONE Don’t let my story above put you off, growing an avocado stone is simpler than you think. Place three toothpicks into the stone (pointy end up) and soak the bottom half in water. DIY PAINTED TERRACOTTA POT I’ve been reading Gifts From the Garden by Debora Robertson which has inspired me to look at how plants can be given as gifts. So this year for Father’s Day I gave my Dad a plant. Nothing floral or girly. A chilli plant – practical, edible and manly. RECIPE: SULTANA FREE APPLE CHUTNEY We were gifted this big basket of apples earlier in the week. I tweaked the recipe a little. My alterations were: an extra tablespoon of oil for frying, an extra 150g of apples for a better onion to apple ratio, garlic and ginger to make the recipe a little more savoury (and because I generally add garlic to most things), I reduced the amount of nutmeg and omitted the allspice.STAY & ROAM
