RE:FOCUS
2. Ask the people to contribute. Once the vision is clear, an effective leader asks those who believe to find ways to help advance towards that vision. Weak are the leaders who promise to carry the people, carry the company or carry a nation. And the reason is simple. It’s a promise they can’t keep. RE:FOCUS: MANIPULATION VS. INSPIRATION Manipulation vs. Inspiration. There are only two ways to get people to act: manipulate them or inspire them. Starbucks was founded with a clear sense of Why - that purpose, cause or belief that goes beyond the products we make or the services we offer. The more Simon started to understand the difference between finite and infinite games, the more he began to see infinite games all around us. He started to see that many of the struggles that organizations face exist simply because their leaders were playing with a finite mindset in a game that has no end. The leaders who embrace an infinite mindset, in stark contrast, build stronger, more innovative, more inspiring organizations. They have the resilience to thrive in an ever-changing world, while their competitors fall by the wayside. WABI SABI is a Japanese design concept. It means beauty in that which is temporary or imperfect. Things that come off of an assembly line, for example, are perfect, but things made by hand, like the glaze on a Japanese ceramic bowl, are imperfect. It is their imperfections that give them their beauty. The same is true for people. It is the combination of all of our imperfections that make us vulnerable and beautiful. We love the idea of wabi sabi as a metaphor for the work we do. Our work centers around this idea of life as a journey. That we are all working to become better versions of ourselves. The idea of a “work in progress” is also the strategy for our website. You’ll see little things that are imperfect—the size of images next to each other, for example, or the hand drawn elements. We wanted our site to reflect the journey of constant improvement we are all on—as leaders, as organizations and as individuals. We believe that it is the imperfections that make it feel human, and beautiful.Details
