These are just a few questions which have been perplexing researchers, people who stammer and speech & language therapists the world over. We do know a lot more than we did, but stammering is complicated and the need for research is on-going. Our Research Panel is going to be answering the above questions over the coming months.TEACHERS | STAMMA
Stammering runs in families – it is estimated that around 60% of people who stammer have a relative who stammers. Stammering usually starts between the ages of 2-5 but can be later. Stammering can start very suddenly, overnight, or more gradually. Boys are more likely to continue to stammer than girls. THE OXFORD STAMMER PROGRAMME Children: For younger children the emphasis is on eliminating or greatly reducing stammering. In older children and teenagers the programme aims to manage moments of stammering, while increasing confidence in communicating. Group therapy is available for children aged 7-8 and 9-13.
