Michael Hayter (b. 1961) is primarily a figurative painter of the human condition, taken from the perspective of personal experience. He qualified as a veterinary surgeon in 1986 and went on to study Fine Art at London Guildhall University in the 1990s, having begun painting during his veterinary studies.PLAN YOUR VISIT

Face coverings must be worn by everyone around the building. THE HISTORY OF SPIKE ISLAND, BRISTOL A new home. In 1992, the artists moved into the former Brooke Bond tea-packing warehouse and Spike Island was born. With the help of lottery funding, and private donations, the team redeveloped the site to build a museum-sized gallery space, individual studios, a printstudio, and café.

Spike Island is home to over 70 independent artists at different stages of their careers and working across all types of media. Our professional studios are subsidised, making them accessible to artists who would otherwise find it difficult to afford workspace. LUCY STEIN - SPIKE ISLAND The first major UK solo show and a new commission by artist Lucy Stein. Comprising a new series of coffin-scale paintings, deities carved from soap, and a fully functioning, hand-painted wet room. A MAJOR SOLO EXHIBITION BY BRITISH ARTIST JESSICA WARBOYS Time and landscape, literally embedded in the Sea Paintings, are invoked visually in her films.Ab Ovo (1) (2013) and Ab Ovo (2) (2013) are autonomous films with distinct and intermittent soundtracks, yet operate here as a diptych. Each presents ancient landscapes — standing stones or sandy beaches — as the backdrop for the animation of idiosyncratic yet familiar objects.ÉILIS KIRBY
