A HISTORIC SNOWMOBILE MOMENT April 20, 2008, marks the 40th anniversary of the most ambitious snowmobile expedition ever taken. It all started with a large man from White Bear Lake, Minnesota. BREAKING IN A SNOWMOBILE ENGINE The major break-in period for most sleds is considered 300 miles, or six to 10 hours. The piston rings seating with the cylinder bore is the major concern with the first period of use for any engine. That new record for a snowmobile-engine-based 1000-foot speed run was set by a 15-year-old who is still too young to get his driver’s license. Test riders reported a higher level of handling confidence with the so-equipped Renegade and MXZ models we tested all week – and those differences were accentuated when we had a 2021 MXZ TNT model (which doesn’t get the suspension and ski upgrades) with on the same ride and an MX Z 600R X. 8 SNOWMOBILE SERVICES YOU MUST DO 8 Snowmobile Services You Must Do. THE SLED THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING: THE LAUNCH OF THE REV 1 day ago · The shift in driver position was a part of a whole chassis redesign. It started five years ago when some Ski-Doo sled engineers, who were also dirt bike riders, started talking about how differently they sat on their bikes vs. their sleds. TESTED: ARCTIVA ADVANCE SNOWMOBILE BOOT 2 hours ago · Test rider Steve has been at this snowmobiling game for quite a while – with a riding history that dates back into the 1970s, starting with brands like Chaparral up to his current fleet of Ski-Doos. THE GREAT SNOWMOBILE RACING WAR The Great Snowmobile Racing War. Snowmobile racing was booming in the late 1960s. Literally thousands of racers were running on fairgrounds and farm fields from coast to coast. Each weekend, hundreds of hopeful racers would gather from far and wide to cluster in the pits with those wearing the same colors: Ski-Doo yellow, Moto-Ski orange, Rupp MUST-DO SNOWMOBILE MAINTENANCE The rule of thumb is to screw in the adjuster bolt by hand, then back it out a quarter turn. Set Chain Tension — As long as you’re already changing the chaincase oil, set the chain tension, too. Correct chain tension is equally important as replacing the chain oil because a loose chain might skip and grind on the sprockets, possibly leading to complete failure. HOW TO PREP A SNOWMOBILE FOR OFF-SEASON STORAGE Put fresh grease in every zerk of a snowmobile’s rear suspension before off-season storage. You can’t over-grease a zerk on a snowmobile suspension. Pump grease into the zerk until you see fresh grease come out of the tube or shaft. Look closely and you might see water come out, proving that this is an important step of snowmobileoff
TECH PROFESSOR: TWO-STROKE EXHAUST HARDWARE Tech Professor: Two-Stroke Exhaust Hardware. In the 1960s, it wasn’t uncommon to see a piece of flex pipe hanging out the side of a snowmobile hood, obviously retrofitted by the sled’s owner.
