Both the clicker and the yip are called “markers.”. That means they mark the exact moment the dog is doing what you want and it also means the dog earned a goodie. To teach your dog that yip = treat, simply pair the yip with the appearance of the treat. Say yip and then reach to give your dog atreat.
5 EASY STEPS TO A WELL TRAINED HUSBAND Step 3: Decide what motivates your husband (kid, aunt, sister, etc.). Example: If your husband enjoys it when you say good things about him to your friends, be sure to mention it to your friends (within earshot of your husband) when he does something good. Everyone is different. “Atta boy” works well for some people, while cash works for a HOW (AND WHY) TO TRAIN YOUR DOG TO TOUCH YOUR HAND Hand targeting is one of the easiest dog training behaviors you can teach your dog. It’s dead simple and is ridiculously useful. I wish I’d known about the many uses of hand targeting when I had my “bad dog” Lucky. That dog taught me so much about dogs, behavior, and dog aggression. I was relatively new to dog training when I realized the extent of Lucky’s behavior problems and while PRONG COLLAR ALTERNATIVE Tango and I had fun at Centennial Lake, celebrating Labor Day. TEACH YOUR DOG TO WAIT FOR HIS FOOD Here’s how I teach wait at the food bowl. Start with a food bowl filled with about 40 pieces of food. Lower the food bowl slowly toward the floor. Your goal is to get the food bowl to your knee without the dog moving toward the bowl. If your dog moves toward the bowl, pull the bowl directly back up to at least waist height. Force free training is the latest buzzword in the dog training field now. Ask someone if they use positive methods and they’ll say yes whether they really do or not. They know dog owners are looking for positive training techniques, so they simply say they use them. Force free training is teaching an animal without pain, intimidation, threats
A SURPRISING LOOK AT BALANCED TRAINING Since childhood, we’ve heard “Everything in moderation.” Or “eat a balanced diet.”We’ve been told how beneficial it is to have a “good balance” between work and home. Dog training hasn’t been overlooked – balanced training has become a buzzword in the industry. It sounds good, it makes intuitive sense. But does a balanced trainer get better results? HOW TO STUFF A KONG (OR MANY KONGS!) When you’re stuffing Kongs for 4 dogs, it’s helpful to pre-stuff a bunch, freeze ’em, then you’ve got them ready to go whenever you need them. I use the Kongs to buy me some time if I’m working on a project — occupied dogs are good dogs. Also, every dog in my housegets a
SHOULD YOU GET LITTERMATES? Should you get littermates? I don’t usually get this question. Normally, I hear “Help, we got littermates!” That comes after the littermates are already home and the people are feeling understandably overwhelmed. Most dog trainers, if asked, would say “No way, don’t do it! Never get littermates.” Meanwhile, most dog owners say “We got littermates because”: SMART DOG UNIVERSITY Dogs, man.
