WHY THE CORONAVIRUS COULD PROVE CATASTROPHIC FOR FREELANCERS… ANDEVERYONE ELSE.

As a union official, I help to represent about 15,000 freelancers working in film and TV throughout Britain and Northern Ireland. It’s an unusual job. Generally, freelancers aren’t renowned for being organised by unions. However, in our case, we have managed to press the employers to accept industry agreements covering Major Motion Pictures, TV Dramas and a range of other production roles. We’ve been growing rapidly over the past five years or so. Read moreWhy the Coronavirus could prove catastrophic for freelancers… and everyone else. Boris Johnson’s press conference outlining the UK government’s policy for handling the virus has just finished. It’s liberal compared to the measures announced by the Republic to reserve focus and patience within the population to the end of the cycle. The first aim is to push down the curve of infections and push through until the summer when the NHS is under less pressure and people with respiratory difficulties experience fewer problems to protect the elderly and the sick during … Read more IRELAND’S CARETAKER GOVERNMENT FINALLY MOVES ON COVID 19… Mick Fealty on March 12, 2020, 2:07 pm35 Comments| Readers 881
With the Dublin government finally moving on Covid 19, as Brian notes, expect a similar ramping up of the precautions in Northern Ireland fairly soon. It should be said that the UK is thought to have fairly robust epidemic modeling for such an eventuality. A surprising announcement from Councillor Guy Spence this evening states that he resigned from the DUP on Friday afternoon and will step back from politics and retire from Belfast City Council at the end of March. Aged 19, Spence was first elected to council in May 2011, becoming Deputy Lord Mayor in 2015. Back in April 2015 during the election campaign, his car and home were pelted with eggs. The value of a survey over a snapshot poll is not just the array of detail it pulls in, but that it provides useful detail from those who regularly abstain from using their vote. This is useful when considering the atypically high turnouts engendered by referendums.
