MONDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2019 VETERANS TRIBUTE AND SCI-FI EXPO RETURN With Halloween over, attention turns to upcoming holidays. Among these is Veterans Day. And so the annual Second Life Veterans Tribute, the thirteenth one, has returned. _The Tribute itself is non-political and serves one purpose and one purpose only and that is to honor all the men and women that have given willing of their time to protect the lives we enjoy today.  _ _This wall consists of names submitted by those in Second Life to honor their loved ones from any branch of military service, in any country. Honoring those currently servinc, those who have served, and those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of their

country._

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2019 APRIL LINDEN EXPLAINS LAST SUNDAY'S OUTAGE If you tried to get on Second Life on Sunday October 27th, then you may have been blocked by issues that persisted all afternoon

.

On Wednesday, April Linden, the Operations Manager of the Grid, posted in the Tools and Technology blog just what happened in "The Sunday That Was Not a Fun Day

."

_The trouble started back on Thursday. We had some pretty bad problems talking to key services (packet loss) on one of our Internet links. It didn’t impact everything, but the stuff it hit was pretty important. It started for a few hours on Thursday, but just magically went away on its own. It’s never good when a problem just magically fixes itself because it’s pretty likely it’s gonna happen again. _ _ __ The same thing happened again on Friday, but once again it went away on its own before we were able to debug what actually

happened. _

_ __ We were nervous going into the weekend, and sure enough, it bit us again on Sunday. We started having more Internet communication problems, but this time, it didn’t just go away. _ _ __ Now that we had it in a bad state we started to troubleshoot and figured out really fast that it wasn’t our equipment. Our stuff was (and still is) working just fine, but we were getting intermittent errors and delays on traffic that was routed through one of our providers. We quickly opened a ticket with the network provider and started engaging with them. That’s never a fun thing to do because these are times when we’re waiting on hold on the phone with a vendor while Second Life isn’t running as well as it usually

does. _

_ __ After several hours trying to troubleshoot with the vendor, we decided to swing a bigger hammer and adjust our Internet routing. It took a few attempts, but we finally got it, and we were able to route around the problematic network. We’re still trying to troubleshoot with the vendor, but Second Life is back to normal again. _ April went on to say that the power outages affecting much of

California had

nothing to do with the outage, although one of the people working on the issue was, "One of our engineers was working in the dark in a house without power, with his laptop being powered by a long string of extension cords that ran to a generator outside." _We’re really sorry that this past Sunday wasn’t very fun. The weekend before Halloween is a really fun time to be Inworld, and it was a frustrating day all the way around. (I personally love the way our Residents really get into Halloween in a way that’s only possible in Second Life!) Knowing that it wasn't as awesome as it could have been makes me sad, and we’re working to make it better in

the future. _

April requested that if anyone suspects an issue that may have been caused by the outage, please let the Support team know.

HALLOWEEN EVENTS TODAY It's Halloween. In real life, besides "Trick or Treating," there are Halloween parties and other events for people to go to. In Second Life, one of the larger ones will be the "Creepy Crawl

,"

organized by Linden Lab. This is a four hour event taking place from 10AM to 2PM or longer SL time, starting at Bay City's Hay Maze at North Channel (128/128/24

).

But for those who can't make it, or looking for more, there's many

more parties.

For space fans, the  National Space Society is throwing it's "Spooky

Space" Party

_Celebrate Halloween with the National Space Society's Spooky Space playlist on the audio stream. THE END OF THE ICE CREAM AT LUSKWOOD Since late August, the "Big Tree" at Luskwood had a dark dysutopian

look

with toxic-looking water, grafitti, propaganda from a "Council" with leaflets proclaiming "rebellion" occasionally plastered on them, and a suspicious-looking ice-cream factory. There would be two more bulletins from the Council, one resembling L Ron Hubbard's Sea

Organization

advertisements, the other looking like Soviet propaganda

.

On

Saturday October 26 at 8PM SL time was a "Victory Day" party. As no one from the Newser was there, and there are no known pictures of the event, all that there is to go on what happened are the scenes of wreckage at the Big Tree, with clean water flowing this time, and eyewitness reports. There are multiple reports of a giant crab having wrecked the place, although one man claiming to be with the rebellion was saying he had a hand in the ice cream factory exploding, claiming that the substance was flammable. There was no sign of the crab, other than a much smaller one skittering around. And the "Council?" Reports on what happened to them vary, from getting killed at the event to hospitalized. but it appears their rein over the oldest active community in Second Life is now over. _Note: There was no actual griefing. This was part of a plotline by the residents of Luskwood. _
