Dr. Ira Helderman is a licensed psychotherapist in addition to being a professor of religious studies. His book, Prescribing the Dharma: Psychotherapists, Buddhist Traditions, and Defining Religion, examines the diverse ways therapists incorporate, obscure, or transform Buddhist practices in therapy. Online Education. Each semester, IBS offers a number of online courses (listed as 8000-level courses). Online courses run the length of a regular IBS semester but are usually asynchronous, hosted via the GTU Moodle online education platform. Some faculty augment Moodle courses with video conferencing or CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS Certificate Programs. The Institute of Buddhist Studies offers the following online certificate programs: We also offer the following on-site certificate programs: Students enrolled in a degree program can complete any of our certificate programs concurrently to focus one’s studies and demonstrate competence in a particular area ofstudy
MASTER OF DIVINITY
Master of Divinity. The Master of Divinity (M.Div.) Degree is a 72-unit graduate professional degree which prepares students to engage fully and with confidence in ministry, chaplaincy, and related professions as well as further academic work. The M.Div. program provides a unique opportunity for students to build a rich and nuanced CERTIFICATE IN SŌTŌ ZEN BUDDHIST STUDIES The Certificate in Sōtō Zen Buddhist Studies is intended for two types of students: (1) IBS degree (MA, MBS, or MDIV) program students who wish to demonstrate substantive knowledge of Sōtō Zen history, teachings and practice; and (2) students from outside the IBS, particularly Sōtō Zen priests, lay and monastic teachers and students, who wish to enhance their engagement with theLUKE THOMPSON

The certificate indicates that the student has completed a course of study focusing on the application of Buddhist thought and practice in pastoral care andchaplaincy.

Contact: rkpayne@shin-ibs.edu. During his dissertation research into tantric fire ritual (Skt. homa, Jpn. goma) on Mt. Kōya in Japan, Payne also completed training as a GESSHIN CLAIRE GREENWOOD Gesshin is an ordained priest in the Soto Zen tradition. She trained in Japan at Toshoji and Aichi Senmon Nisodo for four and a half years before returning to the United States and completing Zuise. She is now affiliated with the Empty Moon Zen Sangha. She has a master’s degree in East Asian Studies from the University of Southern California STEVEN BARRIE-ANTHONY Steven Barrie-Anthony is a researcher, teacher, and author in the area of contemporary American religion and public life. He is Director and Principal Investigator of Public Theologies of Technology and Presence, a program supported by the Henry Luce Foundation that gathers and funds leading scholars of religion and journalists forprojects
