12 HOUR SHIFTS
The options we show employees typically include one or more 8-hour, combined 8 & 12-hour, and 12-hour schedules. Roughly 90% of the time, the highest-rated schedules consist of 12-hour shifts. Reasons for the popularity of 12-hour shifts among shift workers: More days off. In a 24/7 operation with 8-hour shifts, there are 91 scheduled days off 10-HOUR SHIFTS IN 24/7 OPERATIONS To summarize, 10-hour shift schedules for 24/7 operations rarely meet employee expectations for several reasons: Most of these 10-hour schedules don't offer 3 days off every week. They rarely offer 3 consecutive days off. Typical 10-hr schedules feature a maximum of one 3-day weekend off every 5 weeks or 2 every 7 weeks. FIXED SHIFTS VS. ROTATING SHIFTS Fixed shifts are preferred by employees, but raise several issues for management. A fixed shift schedule has crews that always work the same shift. With 8-hour shifts, one crew works a day shift, another works an afternoon shift, and a third works the night shift. A rotating shift schedule has the crews changing shifts, often on a weekly basis. 10-HOUR SHIFT SCHEDULES AND POLICE MANAGEMENT Higher-ranking law enforcement personnel (e.g., Police Chiefs, Sheriffs, Captains, and Lieutenants) tend to look at 10-hour shifts in a different way than their subordinates do. They are well aware of the popularity of 10-hour shifts among the officers/deputies, but often are unable to adopt them due to resource constraints. Let's look at the major considerations in the change to 10-hour 12-HOUR SHIFT SCHEDULES WITH NO OVERTIME Most 12-hour shift schedules for 24/7 coverage use 4 crews. When you divide the 168 hours in a week (7 days/week * 24 hours/day = 168 hours/week) by the 4 crews, you get a average of 42 hours/week. With 12-hour shifts, this will require half the work weeks to be 36 hours (three 12-hour shifts) and half to be 48 hours (four 12-hour shifts). PROBLEMS WITH THE PITMAN SCHEDULE (AKA THE 2-3-2 PATTERN) One of the most popular 12-hour police schedules is the 2-3-2 pattern, also known as the Pitman (or sometimes Pittman) schedule. The reason for its popularity is you only have to work 2 or 3 days in a row and you get every other weekend off as a 3-day weekend. No wonder so many people think it's the best. POPULAR SCHEDULE EXAMPLES Packages of 24/7 shift schedule examples. We've compiled an huge assortment of the most popular 24/7 shift schedules in use today, and assembled them into five convenient packages: 8-hour fixed (permanent) shift schedules. 8-hour rotating shift schedules. 12-hour fixed (permanent) shift schedules. 12-hour rotating shift schedules. Let's look at the major considerations in the change to 10-hour10 HOUR SHIFTS
10-hour shifts are a good alternative to 8-hour shifts when there are only one or two shifts a day. Many office jobs, for example, can be handled with a compressed work week schedule consisting of four 10-hour shifts a week, Monday through Thursday. With this pattern, employees get a 3-day weekend off (Fri-Sun) every week. UNDERSTANDING OVERTIME One way to eliminate the OT is to only work 3 shifts per week (36 hours). Although the employees would get 4 days off every week, the downside is their pay would be reduced to 36 hours a week. 2. Another way to eliminate the OT is to replace a 12-hour shift in the 48-hour work week with an 8-hour shift.COST REDUCTION
These organizations should do an analysis that compares the cost of overtime with the personnel costs that could be eliminated. Here is a quick example. Let's say the organization has 18 employees and needs a minimum of 3 people working at all times. They could reduce the headcount to 12, but they would need 2 hours of overtime each week for 10-HOUR SHIFTS FOR 24/7 COVERAGE 10-hour shifts are a popular choice among employees. However, when used with companies working 24/7, the 10-hour shifts create a few problems. The biggest is that it takes three 10-hour shifts to cover the day. This means the company is actually running for 30 hours a day instead of 24, which will boost the staffing requirements by at least25%.
10-HOUR SHIFTS VS. 12-HOUR SHIFTS Most shift length comparisons look at 8-hour shifts vs.12-hour shifts. They also focus on the advantages or disadvantages from the employee perspective. This post will address 10-hour shifts vs. 12-hour shifts from a management perspective. 10-Hour Shifts The primary advantage of 10-hour shifts (and only justifiable reason for considering them) is that they enable organizations to match their EMPLOYEE WORK SCHEDULES FOR RETAIL AND SERVICE BUSINESSES Many retail and service businesses have found it necessary to stay open longer than 8 hours a day and more than 5 days a week. Examples of retailers include apparel, sporting goods, building supplies, household items, jewelers, stationers, and variety stores. Examples of service businesses include dry cleaners, pharmacies, auto repair, dentists, optometrists, and barbers/hair salons. 8-HOUR SHIFT SCHEDULES WITH NO BUILT-IN OVERTIME Schedules using 4 crews would have to average 42 hours a week if you use 8-hour shifts. Schedules without crews might be able to avoid built-in overtime, but it really depends on the coverage requirements and whether you want fixed shifts or rotating shifts. I like to think of overtime as a substitute for staff. SHIFT SCHEDULE STAFFING CALCULATORSEE MORE ON SHIFT-SCHEDULE-DESIGN.COM SHIFT SCHEDULE FAIRNESS Shift schedule fairness. Sometimes, organizations give priority to their most senior employees when assigning shifts. They also give them priority when selecting which days to work each week. We call this a fixed-fixed shift schedule. Both the shifts and the days worked are fixed for each employee. UNDERSTANDING OVERTIME One way to eliminate the OT is to only work 3 shifts per week (36 hours). Although the employees would get 4 days off every week, the downside is their pay would be reduced to 36 hours a week. 2. Another way to eliminate the OT is to replace a 12-hour shift in the 48-hour work week with an 8-hour shift. 10-HOUR SHIFTS IN 24/7 OPERATIONS To summarize, 10-hour shift schedules for 24/7 operations rarely meet employee expectations for several reasons: Most of these 10-hour schedules don't offer 3 days off every week. They rarely offer 3 consecutive days off. Typical 10-hr schedules feature a maximum of one 3-day weekend off every 5 weeks or 2 every 7 weeks. 10 HOUR SHIFTS
However, when used with companies working 24/7, the 10-hour shifts create a few problems. The biggest is that it takes three 10-hour shifts to cover the day. This means the company is actually running for 30 hours a day instead of 24, which will boost the staffing requirements by at least25%.

However, when used with companies working 24/7, the 10-hour shifts create a few problems. The biggest is that it takes three 10-hour shifts to cover the day. This means the company is actually running for 30 hours a day instead of 24, which will boost the staffing requirements by at least25%.

The options we show employees typically include one or more 8-hour, combined 8 & 12-hour, and 12-hour schedules. Roughly 90% of the time, the highest-rated schedules consist of 12-hour shifts. In a 24/7 operation with 8-hour shifts, there are 91 scheduled days off SHIFT SCHEDULE FAIRNESS Shift schedule fairness. Sometimes, organizations give priority to their most senior employees when assigning shifts. They also give them priority when selecting which days to work each week. We call this a fixed-fixed shift schedule. Both the shifts and the days worked are fixed for each employee. 12-HOUR SHIFT SCHEDULES WITH NO OVERTIME Most 12-hour shift schedules for 24/7 coverage use 4 crews. 2. Another way to eliminate the OT is to replace a 12-hour shift in the 48-hour work week with an 8-hour shift. 10-HOUR SHIFTS VS. 12-HOUR SHIFTS Most shift length comparisons look at 8-hour shifts vs.12-hour shifts. This post will address 10-hour shifts vs. 12-hour shifts from a management perspective. 10-Hour Shifts The primary advantage of 10-hour shifts (and only justifiable reason for considering them) is that they enable organizations to match theirCOST REDUCTION
These organizations should do an analysis that compares the cost of overtime with the personnel costs that could be eliminated. Here is a quick example. Let's say the organization has 18 employees and needs a minimum of 3 people working at all times. They could reduce the headcount to 12, but they would need 2 hours of overtime each week for 8-HOUR SHIFT SCHEDULES WITH NO BUILT-IN OVERTIME Schedules using 4 crews would have to average 42 hours a week if you use 8-hour shifts. Schedules without crews might be able to avoid built-in overtime, but it really depends on the coverage requirements and whether you want fixed shifts or rotating shifts. I like to think of overtime as a substitute for staff. CUSTOM-DESIGNED SCHEDULES Popular schedule patterns (e.g., Pitman, DuPont, and Continental) were designed for large companies with steady workloads around-the-clock. These schedules are not suited for smaller organizations that: (1) don’t work 24/7, (2) have limited headcount, or (3) have variable workloads. To maximize utilization of their employees and minimize costs, these smaller companies need schedules that are matched to their staff size, coverage requirements, and overtime/pay week. That’s our specialty. CUSTOM-DESIGNED SCHEDULES Popular schedule patterns (e.g., Pitman, DuPont, and Continental) were designed for large companies with steady workloads around-the-clock. That’s our specialty. NEED A NEW SCHEDULE? If you really want to maximize the utilization of your staff, you'll need a schedule that is custom-designed around your resources and requirements. That is our specialty. We design schedules that are matched to the coverage requirements, number of employees, and your scheduling restrictions / preferences. Most of our clients come from smaller organizations with less than 50 employees. They recognize the value of a good schedule, both to the organization and the employees. But they don't want to waste time trying to do it themselves. Some want to compare alternative approaches (e.g., 8-hour shifts vs. 10-hour shifts). Others simply want to get an expert’s professional opinion on the best solution.DID YOU KNOW THAT:
Scheduling software programs won’t create a schedule for you. They require you to enter work pattern for each employee into a spreadsheet. Some programs come with free schedule templates, but these aren’t always the best choice. Why? * They use 4 crews, so if your staff size is not a multiple of 4 people, you won’t get consistent coverage. * They produce the same coverage on a 24/7 basis. If your workload varies by time of day or by day of the week, the coverage won’tmatch this.
* Most schedules work best for a specific overtime/pay week, e.g., Sunday to Saturday. If your week is different, the schedule could result in uneven work hours from week-to-week or the loss of weekendsoff for employees.
